We’re considered making a comment about Sal talking a lot, but she supposed he probably talked about as much as Lucinda, and talking would always be better than an awkward silence.

“I don’t know if they have a secret menu... But I like the veggie Italian or the old capicolla and cheese.” Arte answered. The veggie Italian comes with ghost pepper cheese, which is what I like. I don’t know if you like spicy stuff but if you do than you might like that.” Arte offered as they walked.

Arte was a plain dresser, she liked to wear things that were baggy or loose fitting. Though Roxanne continues to plead with Arte on a day to day basis to wear dresses or more feminine things. Instead she wore some loose fitted straight leg jeans, tucked into her work boots. She liked her flannels, a favored accessory over any miscellaneous t shirt gifted to her from Lucinda. Today, it was a ‘Tiffany’ t shirt, because ‘I think we’re alone now,’ is timeless classic.

“I like spicy food. It’s one of my favorite kinds of food. It’s also pretty great watching watching my uncle Dre try and eat spicy things. He practically turns purple.” Sal laughed. “I think I’ll try your recommendation.”

“I don’t think anyone in my family cares for spicy stuff, they’re very French.” Arte said plainly though it was her poor attempt at making a joke. The deli was just down the street from the shop as Arte had said, it was a little building built into other brick buildings in a uniform row. There were little garden chairs and tables outside though they took up a lot of space in the sidewalk. The doors were open and revealed it was quite busy, there were several people working behind the deli counter but one man in particular stood out. He wasn’t very tall, so he leaned over the counter with some effort. His hair was balding but he kept a salt and peppered mustache beneath his nose. He was offering out samples, little cubes of cheese and cups of soup. But when Arte walked in he wasn’t too busy to acknowledge her.

“Artemia!” He greeted with much enthusiasm.

Artemia was either a nickname or what he thought her name was, either way Arte didn’t mind and never corrected him. She smiled softly and nodded in acknowledgment before taking her place in line.

Sal grinned at the kind acknowledgement, as if it was extended to him by proxy. He looked down at Artemis.

“You really are in tight, aren’t you?” He said.

“Maybe, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s like this with everyone. He’s just a nice person.” Arte shrugged. “So what made you decide to move to the city, wouldn’t you have the place to yourself about now?” Arte asked, opting to make polite small talk while the waited in line.

“I mean, not completely. Godric will probably never leave and Owen is still in his last year of school.” Sal explained. “I just thought it would be nice to get out and experience things, you know? Outside of country bumpkin life.”

“Maybe so, but I want to experience new things nonetheless.” Sal bobbed his head with a grin. “So what made you want to go into medicine? You never really struck me as the type” he said, as if they had met more than just a handful of times.

“Eh I just see it as something that’s needed, for supernaturals I mean. I think I be good at it, I think I could help.” Arte explained simply. I know with my sister, I’d end up patching her up a lot when she’d sneak back in from whatever she did at night. I figure lots of people need someone like that.”

“That’s very true. The special doctors we do have are spread pretty thin.” Sal nodded in agreement. “But is it something you only see as vital or are you actually into it? Passion matters too.”

“I guess, but I kind of don’t want to make a living out of things I love. I’d worry I wouldn’t love them the same way.” Arte countered. “I could be a doctor and that will pay the bills, and then I can go home and do what I love for me.”

“Sandwiches.” Arte said, it was a joke, and also to change the subject as the owner was calling them up. Arte moves up in the line and smiled softly.

“To veggie Italians please.”

“Whose your friend? Does he want soup? A sample for your friend?” He asked, already pouring the soup of the day into a cup for Sal.

“Oh, absolutely.” Sal grinned at the offer. “I’m just a friend of the family.” He said, reaching out for the little soup.

The man was elated that Sal agreed to the sample, he poured him a cup.

“This is butternut squash, old family recipe. Very good, good for you. You like it, the first one is on me.” He rattled on with great enthusiasm. “He’s strong huh? Big man, strong boy, would make a good husband!” He boasted at Arte.

“Okay sir, thank you for the input.” Arte was quick to dismiss the notion. Why was everyone on her today about boys?

“You know what my wife tells me, she tells all our daughters, get a man who isn’t afraid to eat. Because a good man will always be at the dinner table with family. Food and family, that is everything.” He continued.
