Polina stepped forward, closing the space between them, and curled her fingers on Alexei's chin to gently guide his head so that the bathroom light could better illuminate the area without shadows being cast.

"This is better." She said to him before stepping away to grab and wet a rag to start the small task of cleaning Alexei up. It was true that Peter had done most of the work in cleaning Alexei up, but in truth Polina wanted to busy her hands a bit while she thought of what questions she wanted to ask him. After all, he'd told her that he would tell her everything. "So...is it rude to ask what you are?" She'd turned the water on and let it run until it was warm before she stuck the rag into the faucet stream to wet it. She twisted the excess water out and then returned to Alexei to dab at the bigger mess at his collarbone. She kept her gaze down at her hand.

“No, I don’t think so.” Alexei answered, he didn’t need to think about that one. If it were someone else, in a different context, perhaps. “I’m a werewolf.” He answered, his dark eyes looking on the reflection of her face in the mirror, studying her for her reaction.

Polina was surprised, but only in the way she hadn't ever suspected Alexei was anything more than human, let alone something supernatural that she had never encountered or had personal context for. Her gaze flitted up to Alexei to study his face, as if to see if there was something there that gave his werewolf identity away that she had perhaps missed before. Of course, there was nothing to find. He was still as dark and handsome as she had thought he was before with his sharp planes and even sharper, obsidian eyes that she adored.

"Is everyone in your family a werewolf too?" She asked. Just because he'd said they were all inhuman didn't mean they were all the same sort of supernatural, she supposed.

“Yes, everyone in my family is a werewolf. I think my maternal grandmother was…something else. But I’ve never met her, so I don’t know much about her background.” Alexei admitted. His mother rarely spoke about her past or upbringing, he knew she didn’t remember a lot of things and didn’t like to talk about it. But he did know that Fauna’s mother was othered in someway, and from that Fauna thought that was maybe why Alexei had been born with pointed ears and fanged teeth. She supposed he was some sort of little hellion from her mother’s side. But the lack of magical ability, and eventually shifting into a wolf, quelled those ideas. Alexei was a werewolf, and his peculiarities had everything to do with him, and nothing to do with Natas.

"I see. So, do you...I don't know if this is rude either, but do you turn into a wolf? Like with the full moon?" Polina inquired, stepping away to clean the rag so she could finish the job of cleaning his shoulder.

Alexei let out a little puff of laughter through his nose. It was not rude nor unreasonable to wonder, but it was funny nonetheless.

“I do, but it’s not only on a full moon. The first time a werewolf shifts, is sort of random. Some are early, some are late bloomers, I think it’s different for everyone. But every time after that first time, it’s a choice whenever we do it.” Alexei explained.

Polina smiled a little at Alexei's chuckle and stepped back over to finish wiping at his shoulder. She reached down then to grab his hand, raising his arm up so she could wipe down the remaining streaks of blood there.

"Does everyone who works for your family know?" She asked.

“Yes, I believe so. That wasn’t always the case, but at some point it was becoming more difficult to keep secret. Some people in our family aren’t as discreet.” Alexei explained, it was funny to hear him make remarks about discretion considering how often Alexei wandered around covered in blood and body parts. But he was talking about those of his family who had mastered the special skillset of “localized lycanthropy,” otherwise known in their family as, “wolf head.” His uncle Adrik and his daughter Mila were gifted that way, though Adrik was the main abuser.

Polina stilled for a moment. So that was how it was. Everyone else in Alexei's life either was a werewolf themselves or knew about his supernatural status, all except her. Polina was never quick to anger, and even now anger wasn't something that even occurred to her. If anything, she felt wounded.

She understood that many of the supernatural population still faced prejudices, small and large, so it made sense that many of them kept their otherworldliness secret. But apparently Alexei being a werewolf wasn't much of a secret at all, it was just her who had been kept in the dark. She couldn't understand why he hadn't told her. Was she so untrustworthy to him? Did he not trust her enough to keep his secret? That idea made her chest ache and her eyes sting.

"Oh...I see." Polina's voice was quiet as she began dabbing at Alexei's arm again, however her movements slowed and she went still once more. She needed to know. "Why...didn't you tell me?"

Alexei could read Polina's movements, she seemed...Disheartened. Alexei scrunched his brows at this as he continued to observe and listen to her. He thought that it was better that his family was upfront with their people about who they were. But then it did finally dawn on him, seeing her wounded expression, it must seem like she was the only one who wasn't in on the joke, so to speak. His expression shifted to panic, and he reached to grab her arm.

"It's not like that!" He blurt, his cheeks pink with embarrassment. He paused, biting the inside of his cheek as he tried to find the right way to explain himself. "I- I guess I forgot..I was never thinking about it." He admitted somewhat sheepishly.

Polina’s brows pinched in confusion as she raised her gaze to his face.

“You what?” She asked, almost as if there was a chance she had misheard or misunderstood him. Surely he didn’t just forget something so important as this.

Alexei pursed his lips, still flustered and embarrassed. But he wanted Polina to understand, he would never intentionally keep something from her.

"I'm sorry...I wish I had a better explanation. It never crossed my mind. But you have to believe me, I would never keep something from you on purpose. You can ask me anything!" Alexei sort of rambled, stumbling through his words.

Polina sat in shocked silence for a beat, taking in Alexei's genuine embarrassment and truly frustrated babbling, before she felt something she hadn't expected. A bubble of laughter escaped her lips.

"You forgot?" She asked again, placing a palm against Alexei's cheek as she smiled in amusement at the notion. Riding on the coattails of the overall silly notion was relief.

Alexei’s eyes looked pitiful and glossy, he wasn’t yet relieved by her laughter, but it did give him hopeful pause.

“I forgot.” Alexei repeated, his cheek in her hand and eyebrows still scrunched with worry.

Polina noted Alexei’s lingering anxieties, perhaps even greater than hers had been, and set the rag aside so that she could use both hands to cup either of his cheeks. She leaned down to place a tender peck to his worried brow.

“I see now.” Polina pulled away just enough to instead link her hands at the back of his neck and look down. “You’ve told me now though, so it’s alright.”
