Shika swallowed the lump in his throat before seating himself beside Wyla, opting to be quiet.

"So, Mom, Dad, how are things? I'm sorry I haven't gotten to spend much time with you, we've all been busy." Wyla said as she tried to create at least a civil conversation between everyone.

"Things have been fine, Daddy's finally talking about maybe retiring." Louise said, looking to Philip.

"Just thinking about it, Lou. I don't know if I want to give up the grind yet, I like working." Philip said. "What do you do for a living, Shika?" He asked then.

Oh no. Wyla thought.

Oh no. Don't say artist, say something fancy and made up sounding.

Shika was already sweating.

"Well, currently I'm a project manager at Animation Grid (That's my knock off Cartoon Network)." Shika said, hoping the name drop would be impressive.

Although, he hadn't told anyone yet, he finished up the project he was partnering with them on. They wanted to keep him full time, but Shika declined to come home early and be with his family. That, was going to be a surprise, but the timing was weird since Wyla's family are only just now meeting him. Currently freelancing and piggybacking off previous publications, seemed less impressive in his head.

"Project manager? What does that entail?" Philip asked, taking another bite of his previously acquired sandwich.

Wyla continued to serve up a plate for Bixley then her mother, watching the interaction closely. She didn't care what Shika's official title was or even that he was an artist, she knew he was good at what he did, he was successful, and regardless of any of that, she loved him. But she couldn't say the same for her parents.

"Well, lots of drawing and writing, or delegating people to do that at the very least. The managing aspect being that I have to oversee and finalize episodes and upcoming shows and specials." Shika tried to explain with a faint shrug. He wanted to be able to explain it without using the words drawing, or cartoons but that was literally his job.

"Oh...you make cartoons." Philip said, making a slight face. "Animators don't make much, do they?"

"Philip." Louise scolded.

"I like Shika's cartoons." Bixley spoke up.

"Thanks, Bix." Shika smiled at her. "And no, animators don't make much more than minimum wage often. But I'm also not an animator, I can say I can afford to live quite comfortably." He explained then.

"Shika actually makes great money, and it's doing something he enjoys and is good at, so it's really nice." Wyla explained with a nod. "He's been able to fly us up to New York a few times now, right, Bix?"

"Yeah, we do lots of fun stuff." Bixley nodded as she eagerly picked at her food.

"Well, as long as you both are happy and doing okay." Louise said with a nod then, noting her husband's still bitter expression. "Right, Phil?"

"Mrm." He grumbled in "agreement".

Shika couldn't help but smile, he was feeling more confident with Wyla's support. And Louise didn't seem so bad, she was polite at least. Maybe he wouldn't win over both parents, but if he could get at least one, that was a win, right?

"You and Bixley seem to get along well, Shika." Louise pointed out, simply for the sake of conversation. "Do you have any children of your own? Or are you just a natural?" She asked, mostly as a light tease, but it still caused Wyla to pale slightly at the mention of "children of his own".

Shika chuckled, sweating again but did is best to maintain his cool.

"Oh I guess I'm a natural." He said then.

"Well, that's good. Bix is a handful herself, wouldn't need to add any more to the chaos, I imagine." Louise gave a little smile.

Wyla, much like Shika, began to sweat as she looked to him, trying to gauge his own nervousness, something her father caught sight of.

"Wyla are you alright?" He asked, cocking his brow.

Shika looked at Wyla, it was a look of, how much longer do we lie before we spill the beans? He wanted to follow her lead.

Wyla glanced to Shika and caught his look at her look and gave a little head bob and a sigh.

"Actually...um...about adding to the chaos." Wyla spoke slowly.

Phil and Louise both looked to their daughter, wide eyed.
