“Yeah, I guess so.” Remedy sort of shrugged, somewhat embarrassed by her earlier behavior. Her mom had been right, and she hadn’t had a reason to be offended by her or Romulus for that matter. “You we’re right, I guess I do look pregnant. Because I am pregnant.” Remedy admitted.
Romulus stood up, a complicated whirlwind of emotions stirring inside of him. On one hand, he was overjoyed at the prospect of having created something as wonderful and exciting as a child with Remedy. On the other, he worried that he would be a naturally unfit parent like his parents. What if their horribleness was hereditary? What if he was cruel or couldn’t love his child like his parents were to him and his siblings?
Regardless of his feelings, there was a more important matter to address first and foremost.
He went over to Remedy and reached for her hands.
“Okay…how do you feel about it?” He asked her. No matter what, he loved Remedy and wanted her feelings to come first. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Remedy hadn’t considered that Romulus might have concerns being a parent, in context to his parents and how they raised him. To Remedy, Romulus was just Romulus, and his past and his family didn’t define him in her eyes. Her pause was brief but still thoughtful, as he took her hands, she considered her reply.
“I guess…inconvenienced, because it’s going to be so much harder working on the house while pregnant. Or I assume it will be. Or maybe it’ll be better, because I’ll be nesting and working harder to make it nice for the baby?” She considered aloud. “But overall, I think I like you enough, I would like two of you.” Remedy offered then, with a sincere smile.
Remedy scrunched nose as she laughed a little bit. “Of course I do, have I ever said something I don’t mean? I love you, you love me too right?” She asked then.
“I guess that was a dumb question.” Romulus laughed before nodding. He reached up to playfully squish Remedy’s cheeks between his fingers and leaned in to kiss at her face. “Of course I love you. I even love you when you’re throwing croissants at me.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“In my defense, it seems I was just feeling hormonal.” Remedy chuckled into their kiss. As she pulled away, she looked down the hallway, and nodded. “I think that first room on the left, should be their bedroom.” She said.
“Mm, I think that’s a good choice. Lots of sunlight through the windows.” Romulus agreed, joining Remedy in looking down the hall. “I think we should paint it green. I like green.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“I like green too,” Remedy agreed with a nod. “We should make the closet bigger too, I know there was five of us but Mom said she never had enough storage space for clothes and toys.” A bit of information that Roxanne had shared long ago, in reference to something totally different. But now Remedy was pregnant and the anecdote found it’s way to the forefront of her brain.
After a handful of additional pregnancy tests (all of which had returned as positive) and a few weeks of waiting for an opening at Peter’s office, the day of Remedy’s appointment.
Romulus was still admittedly a bit nervous about the prospect of becoming a father, after all, his upbringing had been so miserable he wasn’t sure he knew HOW to be a father that wasn’t as cruel as his own. But the more he and Remedy talked about the future in regards to their baby, what started only as a small flicker of excitement was turning into something more. Perhaps, with Remedy at his side, he could be a good father.
But like most first time parents, regardless of excitement, as they sat in the waiting room at Peter’s office, he was still a bundle of nerves. He bounced his leg anxiously as he watched small children and babies play in a designated corner for toys while their mothers sat nearby cradling stomachs of all sizes and other expectant fathers read waiting room literature (too bad he couldn’t read to distract himself).
“So, uh, do you know what they’re going to do? For the appointment?” He asked Remddy. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Remedy had been sort of casual about her pregnancy. She didn’t have worries about being a mom, or Romulus being a dad. She hadn’t even suffered any major symptoms so far, no morning sickness, or wild cravings. That being said, she was totally engrossed in a pamphlet about cord blood banking.
“Hm, some general probing, I assume.” Remedy said before folding down the pamphlet to look over at him. “I think we might hear the heartbeat.” She said then.
Truthfully she didn’t know what would happen in this kind of appointment. She could only really go off of what she’d seen on tv, which she assumed incorporated some theatrics that wouldn’t be happening at her appointment.
“The heartbeat? They can do that?” Romulus asked, not because he thought Remedy was pulling his leg, but rather he didn’t understand how that would even be possible.
Before he could get an answer, however, the door to the back opened and Peter appeared, letting out another young couple and a rather fresh looking baby before he looked up to Remedy and Romulus. He looked a little tense upon seeing Romulus, but this was something Romulus was more or less used to. He gave them a little wave of his hand to call them over. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Remedy popped up, reaching to hold Romulus’s hand as they walked. She wasn’t normally a very affectionate person in public, but sometimes when she could see someone visibly bristle as the sight of Romulus, she liked to hold his hand. In part to reassure Romulus, and also the people around. He wasn’t a scary person to her, it almost felt silly to suggest otherwise.
Holding his hand, they followed Peter down narrow hallways. Everything was white and protected under thin paper or sheets or plastic. The floors must’ve been cleaned recently, polished with a good wax, because Remedy’s shoes squeaked and scuffed against the linoleum. They followed Peter into a small room, naturally featuring a bed for Remy to perch on, and a couple of chairs for Romulus to choose from.
Romulus had very little experience with hospitals and modern medicine practices in general, but he had undergone plenty of poking and prodding at the appointment he and his twin were both subjected to when they were released from their Society hold. Obviously, it paled in comparison to what his parents put him through, but he also wouldn't go as far to say that it was "nice". He pursed his lips a bit upon entering the room, squeezing Remedy's hand tight at the sight of a little tray set aside with the tools to draw blood. He was certain Remedy had endured worse with her history at the fight club, but he still wasn't keen on anyone jabbing at her.
Meanwhile, Peter closed the door behind them and took an audibly shaky breath to calm his ever nervous demeanor before going over to where he'd set down Remedy's preliminary chart down on a counter adjacent from the exam table.
"S-so you, uh, you set up an appointment regarding pregnancy?" He asked, stumbling a bit when he noticed Romulus's stiff stare at the room. He looked too much like his father for it to be comfortable to Peter. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Remedy observed Romulus’s reaction, though she didn’t actually surmise it had anything to do with her, and a general aversion to a hospital setting. Or maybe Peter was making him nervous or uncomfortable. Remedy decided to continue holding his hand, and opted to sit down in one of the chairs, next to Romulus, instead of the examination table.
“Yup, I got knocked up.” Remedy confirmed, plopping down in the chair. She hoped her casual attitude would reassure Romulus, but she was going to be casual anyways.
