“No...Sasha was brave.” Mila corrected, brows furrowed. Calloway’s answer made her feel complicated in a way that made it hard to appreciate his honesty. “So if I wasn’t there today, if I wasn’t...pretty. We both would’ve been killed?” She reiterated for confirmation.

Calloway opened his mouth, but then closed it when he realized how complicated, or rather, unpleasant, that answer was. He looked away then, clasping his hands in front of him to fuss with his fingers a bit.

"I...I'm from a family of hunters,we do what we do for a living and for our livelihood." He said, though, that felt like a lame excuse. "This was supposed to be my first solo job." He admitted then. "To be honest, I don't know if I would have been able to go through with it or not in the end."

“I understand that, violence is an integral part of mob life as well though I don’t partake...Your answer makes me sad, I don’t really know why. But I guess however it had to happen, I’m glad we’re alive.” Mila said then, fidgeting with her own hands.

Calloway glanced up, a frown on his face and his brows furrowed.

"I'm sorry it makes you sad though." He said to her.

“It is alright. I probably should not have asked.” Mila said quietly, trying to feign a smile to assure Calloway she was okay in spite of being sad.

Among the complex feelings stirring inside of her, beyond her puzzling sadness she felt a strange ache for Calloways comfort. Perhaps him saving her (even if last minute) allowed her to develop a fondness for him? Or maybe it was simply the flowers and flattery? Either way she recognized wanting to be hugged and comforted by her would be murder was bizarre, and it made her feel even worse somehow.

"I'm sorry that I put you in a position that you had to ask to begin with." Calloway said, still a slight furrow between his brows. "But, if it helps, I won't try and do it again. I'll even try to make things better with your brother if he'll accept an apology."

“Do you promise?” Mila asked then, bearing all the similarities of when she had asked him to make another promise earlier that day.

With the same sincerity as the first time, Calloway smiled softly and gave a nod.

“I promise.” He assured her.

Mila’s face relaxed then and she smiled softly, comforted by his promise.

“I like lilacs.” She said then, a reference to his earlier question about what flowers she liked. But it was also a subtle invitation that he was welcome to visit her again.

Calloway’s entire face lit up.

“Lilacs? I can remember that.” He beamed. He leaned in, interested in Mila. “What else do you like? What do you like to do? To eat?”

Mila flushed again as he leaned in but tried her best to answer his questions sincerely.

“Um going to the cafe, but you probably knew that. Hm bike rides on gloomy days so i don’t need my glasses...I like to cook, I think I’m pretty good at it. Mm I like cheesecake?” She offered.

“I like cheesecake too. Have you been to that diner down by the river? It’s a little out of the way, but they have really good cheesecakes and pies.” Calloway nodded before an idea came to him. “Let me take you.”

Mila was surprised once again, she couldn’t recall a time she had gone anywhere by herself. Her brothers or any member of their crime family had always been with her.

“I...I could never, my family would never let me.” She said.
