Armand had never thought of himself as a romantic person. He had been with plenty of women in his lifetime, but he never truly felt that he had loved any one of them. In fact, he had been quite sure that the prospect of love and romance was simply not one he was ever meant to pursue.

Until he met Natas.

The nature of their relationship had initially been business, and that worked well for a number of years, but then came the idea that they could bring into the world a stronger breed of supernatural, an amalgam of Natas's black magic wielding and Armand's wolf, and their relationship changed.

There was no love bred when Natas birthed a set of twin boys, at least not at first for Armand. Their sons were the product of something more and that something would perhaps benefit Natas and Armand in the long run. Then along came a daughter, born only a short time after her elder brothers, and it was then Armand was aware of the faintest flicker of something more regarding Natas. It was the beginning of love.

He wasn't intent on admitting it at first, but as more and more time passed and was spent with Natas and their "family", it became harder to sideline those feelings. It became so hard it was almost unbearable.

Armand had just managed to lay their eldest sons to rest by the woodstove in their shack, their usual sleeping spot, and went to seek out Natas wherever she was on the premise.

Natas was in her study, standing over a table that was covered in different tools and relics, currently thumbing through a book idly after having put Fauna to bed. Natas was not a person who felt love, trading godlike power and command over the dark arts over the ability to love or feel love. She didn't ever recount it, there was a time in France when she still traveled with Navrik that he brought it up to her, the last time she loved.

Completely submerged in the the politics of war and her magic becoming more impressive all the time, a young Natas was once very vulnerable to not one, but two powerful warlords. Brothers (who were married), Attila and Bleda. They died and the romance ended of course, whatever the reason that she was unable to love again isn't for certain. Perhaps she traded that too in exchange for more power?

Men and women, lovers and spouses have come and gone quickly in her lifetime. But she had been with Armand for an extended period of time now. And sincerely, it had never occurred to her whether or not she loved him or vice versa. It really wasn't important to her. They had arrangement, a common goal and interest in chaos. There was an unspoken loyalty, and Natas thought that stood apart from feelings of love, more important.

The hut was small, so Armand found Natas almost as soon as he started looking for her. He stopped in the doorway and leaned gently onto the frame.

"Are you planning a ritual?" He asked. It wasn't something that was out of the ordinary, Natas often worked her magic in the late hours of the night.

"Yes, I have to do some research first but I'm planning to." Natas said, nodding without looking up.

Armand made a sound of acknowledgement, watching Natas idly for a moment before speaking again.

"Natas, may I ask you something?" He inquired.

Armand contemplated for a second, wondering how to have this conversation. He knew Natas was a bit out of touch with her emotions (much like he'd been prior to this), so he felt like there wasn't a right way to go about it.

But there wasn't a wrong way to go about it either.

"Natas, how do you...regard me?" He asked.

Natas didn't miss a beat, for her that was easy enough to answer. "You're my most trusted and valued companion, I respect you highly as a man and my partner." She explained, still without looking up.

"Yes, but...what does....what does being your partner entail? To you?" Armand asked, still watching from the doorframe.

Natas looked up then. "We help each other, support our shared goal." She began. "You get to be around me, tap my abilities and vice versa for me."

Armand felt something sink inside him.

"That's it though?" He asked.

She narrowed her eyes then, shutting her book.

"Armand, what is it that you're wanting to ask me and what is it that you expect me to say?" Natas asked, although she felt as though she already knew.

Suddenly the question felt much too complicated to ask, or maybe it was he was expecting a much to complicated or even disappointing answer. But still, he pressed on.

"We've been doing this for several years now and...we have children together now. I just...I feel something different for you that's more than we've had before. I wanted to know if you felt the same." He said, trying not to sound too invested, though, admittedly, he was.

Natas did not look amused, in fact, she looked insulted.

"So you think you love me, is that it? And I should love you too?" Natas asked, rhetorically of course. "Time passes and I push out little soldiers, so now we must love each other...What a strange fantasy you wish to entertain." She added, it was probably an unnecessary thing to say, coming across mean and cruel. But that's just how Natas liked it. She crossed the room to stand before him, unafraid and with certainty about how she felt.

"What we have is much more important than love. You are the only person I trust, the only one I regard at all. I would always defend you within my abilities. If you died, I would mourn you. I would finish what we started, and I have given you a legacy to carry on your name. What is it that you are looking to get, from love?" Natas asked then, in all sincerity.

Armand felt himself bristle at Natas's statement.

"Strange fantasy?" He scoffed, clearly offended himself. "I did not think it was so far fetched that perhaps this...emotion or what have you that I feel for you might be reciprocated."

As he stared down at Natas he knew that it had been pointless to ask Natas what she felt for him, it was clear she did not share the same level of emotional devotion, bordering on affection, he felt for her.

"I did not expect to get anything from you, except perhaps a returned emotion. But you've made it quite clear you don't feel the same for me as I do for you." He said, forcing the hurt down as he spoke. He wasn't sure if it was his pride or something else that thrummed painfully inside his chest.
