Toma pinked again, although he felt certain it was meant only as a friendly gesture. But he nodded and smiled politely.

“As long as it’s a good lunch.” He smiled, agreeing to the engagement, revealing small dimples at the upturn of his lips.

“Good lunch? Try the best lunch. Do you like Italian subs?” Rudy asked as he started over towards the cooler. Before he could reach the cooler, Lizette reached out to put a hand over it.

“Rudy, I forgot bread when we were packing up, we’ve only got the cold cuts. Could you and Toma could go find a vendor?” Lizette asked sweetly, though she did give her son a sly wink. Even if Toma hadn’t totally picked up on the hint, she did.

Rudy pinked a little, but smiled.

“Sure, but do you mind, Toma?” He asked.

“Alright, Ma’, well be back.” Rudy said as he proceeded to take off the apron, though he left the sunhat on still. He gestured for Toma to walk with him.

“Take your time!” Lizette called after the two of them.

Toma walked along side Rudy, holding onto the strap of his bag as he didn’t know what to do with his hands. He peeked over at Rudy again, stealing little glance. Rudy was undoubtedly handsome, at least in Tomas opinion. Growing up in Romania, though he would never let it be known, he always admired the neighbor boys most out doing yard work. It was the only good thing about Sebastian banishing him outside to chop wood and cut grass, he could pause between the swing of his scythe and catch glimpses of the boys across the way. They were tall and muscular, their shirts clung to their abs, covered in sweat from summer heat.

He thought Rudy looked a bit like them, rugged; although maybe more rustic? His broad shoulders and the roughness of his palms from shaking hands earlier was enough to make him swoon. He debated on telling Valentina about it later, though she was sure to embarrass him about it.

While admiring Rudy, Toma of course noticed he had removed his apron but was still wearing his sun hat. It was a bit silly, and Toma could never wear it at risk of appearing more girlish than usual. But he liked that Rudy was wearing it, his confidence was endearing.

He rehearsed the compliment in his head a bit.

Cool hat. Sounded strange even in his head, and really straight sounding.

Your hat is nice. Too formal, what would he say back to that besides ‘thank you’?

“Is uh, the hat and apron apart of your uniform?” He asked, clumsy with his words in spite of him choosing them so carefully.

Rudy gave a little chuckle at the clumsiness and earnestness of Toma’s question. It was endearing.

“Kind of, I guess. Ma’ made the aprons as a sort of uniform and makes me and my brother wear them whenever we help out at markets. The hat is more for me, I guess. Gotta stay out of that sun.” He half-lied. “Do you usually come to the Saturday market?”

“I do, it’s the highlight of my week.” He admitted brightly with a smile, it was an easy question to answer.

Toma made a face, not sure if it was appropriate to be that honest.

“Hm we don’t have to talk about that.” Toma said politely as he feigning a smile. “You said you have a brother you work with? Why isn’t he here today?” He asked, opting to change the subject.

"I do. His name is Archibald, Archie for short. I usually come with Ma' anyway, but he was busy today so he didn't tag along." Rudy explained with a little bob of his head. "Do you usually come here alone?" He asked then.
