It was only at Remedy’s shouting that Romulus released Han, though he did shove the boy away from him with some force, enough to drop him back into his seat.

“HOW did this happen?” He demanded.

Remedy tried to usher Romulus back into his seat, though her expression was equally serious. Her lips were pressed into a thin line and her thick brows were furrowed deeply above her intense dark eyes as she glared silently at Han from across the table.

“We had sex Dad, I don’t know what else to tell you. Maybe it was supposed to happen this way?” Ava tried, though Remedy’s stare shifted to her daughter at that. What a stupid thing to say.

Romulus let out a scoff of fake laughter.

“I hardly think that’s the case.” He said, shaking his head. “What the hell are you supposed to do now, Ava? You two are hardly ready to be parents.”

“Is anybody ready when they get pregnant? We’ve been saving and have gotten a bunch of stuff already, we’ve already been to a few appointments. I stay up all night reading, I know about cord banking and birthing positions, I’ve done labs for a geneticist too.” Ava began, naming things off on her fingers. “I know it will be different when she’s here, we have a lot to learn still. But I’m not stupid, Dad. I wouldn’t still be pregnant if I didn’t think Han and I could do this.”

Romulus sat in stunned silence then, in shock not because Ava had done those things, but rather that she had had TIME to do all those things.

“How long have you known?” He asked then, voice low, angry and disappointed. “How long have you kept it from me and your mom?”

“Thirteen weeks just about.” Ava answered, pressing her lips into a thin line that mirrored her mother’s. “I wanted to be able to prove it to you, that we could do this. That’s why I waited.” She added.

“Thirteen weeks?” Romulus asked, incredulous and angry. “You kept it from us all this time? You’ve LIED to us all this time to try and make a point?”

“I kept it a secret, I thought I was doing the right thing by getting my ducks in a row first. Why does it matter? What would’ve been different if I told you when I found out?” Ava asked, not backing down in defending herself or her attempts to.

“We would have been upset either way, but at least we could have dealt with everything together. At least you would have been honest with us.” Romulus answered, also not backing down, but his anger at least simmering.

“Would you have wanted to do those things together?” Ava asked, her brows furrowing slightly, her defensiveness faltering.

“I would have rather you let us figure it out together rather than try and figure it out on your own.” Romulus said before giving a relenting sigh. “Look, I’m still upset with you two, and that’s putting it lightly, but we have no choice but to figure it out now.”

“Okay, well, where do you suggest we start?” Ava asked, quieter now and no longer defensive as she relaxed into her seat.

"Well, you two might have had time to digest the situation, but I think your mom and I deserve at least the night to work through it." Romulus said before casting a sour look towards Han. "Without extra unwanted guests right now."

“Yeah it might be a bit much hosting right now.” Remedy agreed with a sigh. “Han, you understand it might be Uh, too much to look at you right now. So Ava if you want to say goodnight?”

Although Han was reluctant to throw Ava to the metaphorical (and sort of literal) wolves, he didn't want to press his luck further with her folks and end up as part of her father's meal regimen. He gave a little bob of his head before standing up, Ava's hand still in his as he leaned over to press a kiss to the top of her head. Even if it was a chaste gesture, he could feel Romulus glaring daggers at him.

"I'll head out, okay? I'm just a text or call away if you need anything." He said to her, giving her hand a squeeze. "I love you."
