“Not haunted or stinky? Huh...I wonder why it sat then.” Romano said, taking a brief pause as if he was actually contemplating before he came “back” to the conversation. “How come you’re going to the testing center? Are you guys just getting settled or are you being homeschooled too? Our folks pulled us out after some stuff happened at school.” Romano said, much more cautious with his and his siblings “identities” now that supernatural hate crimes were on the rise.

“Beats me, maybe it’s just bad market?” Jai shrugged with a little laugh. “Ah no, I’m homeschooled too. Stuff happened at my old school, and I’d heard bad stuff happened at the school in this zip code too...So, homeschooling seems to be for the best right now. I just wish the test center had better computers.” Jai added.

“Right? Thank you! My dad tells me that I’m just dramatic.” Romano said, throwing his hands up exaggeratively. “He doesn’t get it though. He never had to go to school or deal with these stupid test centers.”

“Yeah, it seems kind of silly to me. If I could take the test at home on a computer I know works instead of traveling to a center with computers from the 90’s!” Jai laughed.

“90s? That’s generous! I think the test center bought the original Macintosh computers and decided that that was a big enough investment to last them forever.” Romano laughed.

“They probably thought it was the height of technological advancement.” Jai continued to laugh. He had t really laughed like this with someone who wasn’t his mom, it was nice. Maybe he had a chance of making some friendships from this move. “Have you always lived in this neighborhood?” He asked.

“Yeah. Our parents started renting our place before Mom got pregnant with me and Ven. After they had Ava, the owner offered to sell it to them, so we’ve been living there blissfully in debt since.” Romano explained proudly.

“Which one is which?” Jai asked, peeking behind Romano at the troupe behind him. A tall boy who looked identical to Romano, save for an eyebrow scar, a girl who had her face buried in her cell phone, and another boy with dark curly hair and sleep eyes.

Romano turned, still walking albeit backwards.

“Venturo is the clone, Ava is our sister, and Calloway is our adopted brother, a tragic lad really.” Romano said playfully.

“I can still hear you.” Cal clucked his tongue.

“Good, then let me introduce Jai. He’s our new neighbor. Him and his mom moved into the stinky ghost house.” He explained.

“Is it really haunted?” Venturo called with urgency.

“Uh no!” Jai called back.

“Is it stinky?” Ava called, glancing up from her phone.

“Still no, at least it doesn’t anymore.” Jai answered with a laugh.

“It’s all very disappointing to us, the house being not stinky and not haunted.” Romano sighed before turning back around to walk normal. “Is it just you and your mom? Or do you have siblings?” Romano decided to ask. “Do you want a brother? Cal is almost a free agent.”

“Oh it’s just me and my mom. I have a sister somewhere but I’ve never met her.” Jai answered giving a gentle shrug.

“Oh, I’m sorry about that, but if you want the honest truth, you’re not missing much. Ava is a monster. A monster I love and would die for, but a monster still.” Romano nodded.

“The feeling is mutual.” Ava called back.

“That’s what I’ve heard.” Jai chuckled. “My mom and my aunt fight all the time, but I can tell they love each other.” He nodded.

“Where did you guys live before? Still in New York? Or somewhere else?” Romano asked, enjoying his exchange with Jai so far. He and Venturo often opted to be each other’s only company, but it was admittedly nice to socialize with a new face.
