"He works at a yogurt shop, he can't go to school, and now he's...you're pregnant?" Grace sputtered.

Emerson was frowning then, casting his gaze down so he didn't hvae to read Grace's lips.

"Grace!" Irving yelled then. "Stop, Jesus, fucking stop. I don't know why you have to belittle him like that all the goddamn time. He's doing just FINE on his own, he has been for awhile now. You act like he can't do anything, which isn't even close to the truth. He's taught himself how to be his own person without your help."

Grey's face was starting to hurt she was scowling so hard, she had a million things she wanted to say but opted to turn away from her and face Emerson, tapping his shoulder to sign to him.

"We should go, I think I've heard enough." She signed to him before snatching her sonograms off the table and putting them back in her bag.

Emerson's face held a pitifully sad expression. He wanted to stay, try and talk to his mother, but on the other hand he didn't want to press things with Grey either. He didn't need or what to be fighting on two fronts.

He gave a little nod and reluctantly went to get up, turning to see Grace and Irving going back and forth. Grace turned to look at Emerson, signing at him.

"Where are you going?" She asked.

"We leabing." He spoke aloud, his voice slightly choked up.

"Thanks for dinner." Grey said briefly as she stood up, taking Emerson's hand to walk them out.

Grace went to get up as well, but was quickly drawn back to her argument with Irving after several expletives were yelled her way.

Emerson headed out with Grey, fighting the lump in his throat and the quivering in his lips. He had hoped that this would go smoothly, that this would be a happy thing, but he supposed his hope was simply misplaced.

After the door was shut behind them Grey let out a heavy exhale. She wasn't prepared to do this again with her parents. Still, she gathered her composure and tried to peek at Emerson's face.

"Hey, it's going to be okay." She signed and muttered before pulling him in for a hug, squeezing him tight.

Emerson shook his head, turning to look away from Grey even as she held him.

"I wawnted them tobe hahppy." He spoke aloud.

Emerson gave a nod before pulling away just enough to sign at Grey.

"Are you happy though?" He asked. He knew that he was happy, that was certain, but lately he couldn't help but notice Grey's anxiety and he was worried that maybe she wasn't happy like him. Maybe she was dissatisfied like his mother.

Grey made a face. It was a complicated feeling and she didn't want Emerson to misunderstand. She was happy initially, is happy, but her insecurities involving their families made it hard to be positive. But she wouldn't want anyone else to be the Father, she thought Emerson would make an amazing Dad and an amazing husband.

"I am, but...Sometimes, other people's feelings can make it hard." She began.

Emerson's face visibly fell as disappointment settled even further. He looked down and tried to still his quivering lip. Of course he understood the place where Grey was coming from, however, he was still very much disappointed. He wanted everyone to be as pleased as he was regardless of the nature of the situation.

He especially wanted Grey to share his level of excitement.

Grey frowned seeing Emerson visibly upset by her response. She tapped his shoulder to get his attention to sign at him again.

"I think it will be better once everyone who will react negatively, have it out of their system. But it might be better for both of us, not to dwell on it." Grey said.

Emerson, not really one to ignore when someone was talking to him (especially not Grey), watched her sign and gave a small nod, still very much disappointed in the situation.

"I want to go home." He signed then.

"Me too." Grey agreed, knowing he was upset, she still offered out her hand to hold while they walked home.

Emerson took up Grey's hand because regardless of everything, it still brought him great comfort. He gave a light squeeze before proceeding in the direction of home.
