“She’s very domestic like that.” JJ grinned as he thought about his mother. “She was always the kind of mom who sewed our Halloween costumes, made us fresh baked sweets, very doting.” He took a bite of his donut. “What about your mom? She’s at least a little domestic, isn't she? She’s cooked for us.”

“Oh for sure,” Lucinda nodded. “But I guess like, she’s not so old school? I know Roxanne is way older than my mom, so I guess that goes without saying.” Lucinda shrugged.

“Maybe a bit of both. I kind of think baby J will let me know right away what kind of mom they need.” Lucinda answered, patting her round belly. “What kind of dad do you want to be?”

JJ took a bite of his donut and let out a thoughtful hum before speaking.

“Well...my dad wasn’t around as much as he ought to have been when I was smaller, so... not like that.” JJ nodded. “I want to make sure I never miss a Christmas recital, a parent teacher conference, any of it. I want to be around for every little milestone, big or not. I also wouldn’t be mad if I could be more handy like your dad. I’d like to be able to fix things like a leaky sink or a broken wheel on a toy, whatever.” He reaches over with his free hand to rub at Lucinda’s belly. “But like you said, I’m sure they’ll let me know what kind of dad they need. They are bound to be as loud mouthed an opinionated as you are after all.” He joked with a smirk.

“Air? Takes an airhead to know an airhead!” JJ laughed as he “wrestled” Lucinda’s hands from his hair. He grabbed her wrists and went to hold them between them to end her harassment, still grinning.

When JJ first met Lucinda, he hardly thought that she was a palatable person by his standards (something that was confirmed by the Sleepover Incident) let alone a compatible person, and yet, all this time later, he couldn't imagine a better partner in life and mother to his daughter.

They were coming up on their eighteenth anniversary together and since JJ's line of work made things hard to plan in advance, never knowing whether or not he would be sent away on a job, he took the opportunity to plan a little weekend for he and Lucinda. He'd initially planned to send Manon to Remedy's house for the weekend, but seeing as how Manon and Ava were currently "fighting" (sorta), he sent her to his parents instead. Meanwhile, he'd gotten a room at a luxury hotel so he could treat his wife to something special. He'd made them reservations at a swanky new Japanese place he and Lucinda had heard about and was currently finishing up in the shower at the hotel after having had a long day at work preceding their little outing.

Lucinda didn’t explicitly see herself getting married, she had one serious relationship in her life, if you can call it that, and she thought that was it. She thought the rest of her life would be academics and career. But the universe had other plans, and she fell in love with JJ Laughlin hard and fast. Eighteen years flew by and she couldn’t see herself with anyone else. Manon wasn’t planned but was plenty welcome, though Lucinda hadn’t planned on having more children, the universe once again seemed to have other plans.

It was hers and JJ’s anniversary, they were supposed to meet at a hotel for a romantic weekend and a fancy dinner. But in the morning Lucinda wasn’t feeling well, not so bad, maybe some bad left over coffee upset her stomach. But at work it got worse, several trips to the bathroom; hugging the toilet made her suspicious there was a different diagnosis.

Pregnancy.

She left work a little bit early and grabbed a pregnancy test on her way to the hotel. The front desk was aware she was coming and gave her her key to go up and into the room. Wasting no time, she kicked off her heels and ripped open the box with little grace. Dropping the box and the plastic onto the floor as she made a b-line for the bathroom where she could already hear JJ in the shower. Lucinda wasn’t private or classy, or whatever adjective that would best describe someone who would not use the toilet in front of their partner. Whatever that word would be, Lucinda had never been that.

JJ could see a Lucinda shaped silhouette through the fogged glass of the shower as she came into the bathroom and made a line for the toilet.

"Lu, have you showered yet?" He called to her.

“No, not yet.” Lucinda called over the running faucet, not looking up from the task at hand though.
