“I’m sorry to hear that.” Darla said sincerely when she saw the hint of hurt on Dewey’s face. “But maybe that’s all the more reason to let him fuss over you. He’s doing enough for two, hmm?” She suggested lightly.

Darla frowned a bit at Dewey’s saddened demeanor and stepped forward to smooth some of his fluffed hair for him.
“Listen, I know a guy in the cafeteria who keeps some of the beat desserts in the back of house. I’ll see if I can hook you up with something better than jello for making your mood sour, okay, kid?” She offered.

“Alright, I will. I’ll be back with something good.” Darla withdrew her hand then and went to exit the room. She poked her head out first and looked back toward where she’d last seen the boy’s father.

Ace was posted up in the same place, only this time he was wrapping up a conversation with his boss, Riley, who had come to check in. They had an uttered exchange in Russian before Riley peeked up at the nurse.
“I’ll bring Dimitra by later, let me know if anything changes.” She wrapped up quickly before striding away.
Ace looked back at the nurse and smiled softly. “I hope he didn’t say anything too crass?” He teased. |

“What? Nah, he’s a sweet kid.” Darla flapped her hand as she proceeded out of the room. She briefly glanced at the woman striding away. She wasn’t Dewey’s mom, but maybe she was his dad’s girlfriend or something?
The thought made something in Darla sink for some reason. She wasn’t competition for that woman. She was short and plain, her hair mostly flat and freckles that were often not subtle. In a moment she realized she was a little disappointed because if this man, who she admittedly thought was a bit handsome, had someone like that to look at, why would he even spare her a second glance? After a second of self deprecating, she looked away from the woman and back to him.
“Your banishment is over by the way.” She said.

| “Oh good, he pretends to be mean sometimes.” Ace explained before standing up, Ace was quite tall. A good six foot seven and a half, towering over his boss who for a lady was quite tall herself. “Do you think he’s okay for visitors? That was his girlfriends Mom,” He said gesturing to the direction Riley fled to. “She was going to bring her by later if that’s okay?” He asked. |

Girlfriend’s mom.
Darla perked a bit at that (and Daddy Ace’s height unf). So she wasn’t a love interest. She proceeded to answer Ace by giving him a nod.
“He isn’t complaining about anything, there wasn’t anything terribly amiss that I could see either.” She assured. “So is he a little lady’s man? Does he get it from you?” She half joked.

Ace threw his head back and laughed. He hadn’t really date since he JUST started working for Riley as a boy.
“Dewey is a romantic on his own, just the one lady though. Which is significantly more than what I’ve got going on.” He played. |
