“Woah, that’s so far away!” Viktor said, genuinely amazed at this girl beside him, who he now decided had to be a world class traveler. “Do you like it here at least? Do you miss it there?”

“It’s a complicated feeling,” Bernadette chuckled, she hadn’t see her Dad so no one had asked how she was feeling. Though she doubted her father will when he sees her. “It's very different than I thought it would be.”

“Good or bad different? I can show you some of my favorite things if you wanted.” Viktor nodded as they exited the school grounds and headed down the street. Seeing as how many of the schools clubs were just being let out, there were throngs of uniform clad students walking in the same direction.

“Mm just not how I thought it would be. How you guys say it? About green grass?” She asked, trying to remember her English euphemisms. But thinking on it too hard caused her to get distracted, some other students bumped into her which had happened a lot today given she was so petite and learning her way.

“Oh yeah, the grass is green if you water it like you’re supposed to.” Viktor said sagely, though that wasn’t even close to the right phrase. As Bernadette was jostled, he went ahead and placed himself on her other side instead, hoping to be a buffer as it was kindly. “We have lots of green grass, like at Central Park, or like at my building’s roof top courtyard. There’s lots of nice places around the city if you look.”

Bernadette chuckled a little. “I don’t think that’s the phrase I’m looking for. But I’m happy to know there’s lots of healthy grass here.” She said, patient and happy enough with the subject even if it wasn’t quite what she meant.

“No?” Viktor blinked. “Hmm...well, either way, New York will grow on you, I’m sure.” He decided as he stopped in front of a little cafe. Through the window, it didn’t look too busy. “We’re lucky today. Usually it’s busier.” He explained and opened the door for them. He gestured for Bernadette to go first.

Bernadette stepped in, uttering a thank you as she did so. There was a coffee vendor on the pier for tourists but Bernadette had never been to a cafe before. And the only coffee she had ever tried was stealing a sip of black coffee from her nanny.

Which was gross and she didn’t like it.

“What do you like? I’ll pay for it since I asked you to come. They’ve got coffee, tea, cakes, cookies, whatever. My aunt loves the biscotti here, but I like their short cakes the best.” Viktor rattled off as they stepped up to the counter. He looked down at Bernadette with a friendly grin.

Bernadette looked at the menu, lots of things she had never even heard of before. What was an afogato? Like everything else in America thus far, it was a lot.

“Um can I have a caramel latte?” She asked the cashier, a little unsure if she would like it. But was willing to try.

“And I’ll take a cafe bombòn, please. Also a tiramisu. Also also two chocolate croissants.” Viktor ordered with a pleasant grin and bob of his head. He reached for his wallet to pay and was given a table top number in return. He pocketed his wallet and gestured for a window-side table. “So... why did you come looking for me?” He asked as he sat.

Bernadette was quiet and contemplative as she sat down, feeling a little embarrassed.

“Ah, well...The Society had helped me pick a school, schools that already had werewolves who went there. But they said your name, so I had someone I guess I could look for...? I know that sounds crazy,” Bernadette began. “But I’ve never met another werewolf before so it was important to find you.” She admitted shyly.

“Oh, but what about your parents? Or were you turned?” Viktor asked with a quirked brow. He looked up to thank a server as their things were brought to the table. He pushed the scones closer to Bernadette before taking a sip of his drink.

“My mom was, but she died when i was born so..It’s just been me.” Bernadette explained.
