“Monday? That’s a long time not to say anything, but at least it wasn’t a year.” Romulus reasoned before reaching out to accept the toddler. He tucked him against his hip and gave him some light bouncing as he continued to eye him. He bent over to take a brief inhale atop his head, following with a smile. “He smells like one of ours.” He said, looking to Venturo. He reached out to ruffle his sons hair a bit. “He smells like you.”

Venturo perked up at that, his face broke out in a wide smile as he bawled up his fists in excitement.

“He does? I couldn’t tell.” Venturo grinned. “Ain’t he cute? He’s a very good baby too. Quiet, but still opinionated, it’s all in his eyes.” Venturo continued to prattle on proudly.

“He’s very cute, he looks like when you and Roma were little. Neither of you were ever very quiet though.” Romulus nodded as he began towards the dining room with baby Pascal still perched on his hip. “Where are you going to sit? We don’t have any extra highchairs.” He asked aloud, though Pascal was probably still not quite at the talking stage yet and wouldn’t have any answers anyhow. “Maybe you can sit with me. Or your grandma.”

“Yeah! He should sit with his grandpa!” Venturo cheered and even clapped his hands once, bobbing after Romulus as he carried Pascal into the dining room.

Ava still felt skeptical about the whole thing, her expression was stern and annoyed. She wasn’t mad about the baby, but just how casual Venturo was. While he had some experience with babies, from his nieces, it’s a whole different ball game being an actual parent. There was a right way to go about things, and in the best interest of Pascal, Ava was annoyed he didn’t alert anyone before. She scooped up her own child before following after everyone into the dining room.

“So he just kind of showed up on Monday? What about his mom?” Romulus asked, inquiring the same sort of questions, but certainly not with the same edge as everyone else. He moved a few plates around on the table before sitting down, settling the toddler in his lap. He stretched to pluck a slice of tomato from the salad at the table center (fresh from their modest little herb and tomato garden out back) and offered it out to Pascal. He smiled and made a “mmm” sound as if to make it enticing.

“Well, I guess she couldn’t take care of him anymore. That’s what the note said anyways.” Venturo sort of explained as he found his own seat at the table.

Pascal allowed his pacifier go fall out of his mouth and onto his lap, when Romulus offered out the tomato slice to him. Pascal didn’t have a huge appetite, and he wasn’t a very mess eater, thank goodness. But he did always seem willing to try things, or Venturo assumed he was trying since he couldn’t confirm what he’s eaten before and what he has not. Pascal accepted the tomato, chewing on the soft inside part; little red juice began dripping from the corners of his mouth. But as soon as they appeared, Venturo made them disappear; quickly but lightly, dabbing at Pascals mouth with a napkin.

“I see…well, you really should have called at least me and your mama about this, but he’s here regardless I suppose.” Romulus lightly scolded, but, surprisingly considering his previous line of work, it wasn’t nearly as heated or angry as everyone else. “Es beuno, hmm?” He asked Pascal with a soft smile and lightly bouncing him on his lap. “You need to take him to a doctor soon. It’s important he is up to date on vaccinations. Does he have enough clothes? The weather will start changing soon and he’ll need a warm coat. Do you have enough groceries for the both of you? He needs to be able to eat whenever, he’s growing.” Romulus rattled off.

“How do I find a good doctor for him? When they ask about his last name, should I just use mine?” Venturo asked curiously, he felt excited though. He respected his dad and recognized he was a good father, it also helped that he wasn’t behaving like he was angry at him. “I got a couple little things for him, but I need to go back to work so I can afford more stuff. But I think we’re ok on groceries for right now…Does he still need formula at his age?” Venturo asked his dad.

“Let’s set up an appointment at the Society, they have some doctors they have their own network of doctors who specialize with people like us. They would also know how to get his documents or get new ones.” Romulus stretched over the table again to serve some chicken and rice onto his plate and proceeded to take a little shred of chicken and offered that up to his grandson as well. “He seems like he’s old enough to not need formula. You can give him milk and make sure you’re feeding him lots of good food, not just snacks or instant foods. You and your brother always liked lots of fruits when you were little. Carrots and avocados too.” He looked over to Remedy then. “Right?”

Remedy had a sort of sour face at the mention of involving the Society. She knew it was inevitable, and better that they had a lot of family that worked there. But she dread the idea of presenting her snooty older brother, and strait laced father, with a random baby and tell them it was her grandson. Remedy didn’t normally mind what anyone thought about anything, but she was sure this would merit some sort of lecture from JJ. And Remedy never wanted to hear a lecture from JJ.

“Right.” Remedy agreed, exhaling through her nose.

“I didn’t think so, but I wanted to make sure. He doesn’t say anything either so he can’t tell me.” Venturo said.

“Maybe he doesn’t speak English.” Ava said, feigning annoyance as she spoon fed her own daughter some rice.

“Ooh, that’s true. Hablas español niño? Porque no hablas?” Romulus spoke softly to Pascal, much like he did for all his kids when they were little and much like how he spoke to his other grandchildren. He held him out towards Remedy’s general direction. “Try French.”

Remedy sort of grumbled, still holding onto her bitterness before considering what to say and relenting.

“ bonjour bébé, tu aimes les jouets?” Remedy asked, most babies knew the word toy if nothing else.

If Pascal understood, he didn’t give away anything that said he did. His state was mostly blank, vacant. Still fixated on his fistful of tomato.

“Maybe he just doesn’t have much to say.” Romulus shrugged.

“There’s a speech specialist in our school district who is supposed to be good.” Romano offered up, perhaps by way of apology for his earlier reaction. “I can see if she could maybe meet with you guys, see if he’s quiet or maybe a little delayed.”

“Delayed?” Venturo repeated with furrowed brows. He hadn’t considered anything could be wrong with Pascal, he just got him. Did he mess up already?

“It’s not a very big deal.” Ava said, relenting her annoyance with a sigh. She could see her brother was immediately concerned, he clearly cares for this baby. She didn’t want him to worry unnecessarily. “Some kids need extra help, we all do, it’s ok. His chupon might be apart of it though.” Ava explained.

“Well you tell him that. He only pops it out to eat or drink, he looks real serious if you try to take it otherwise.” Venturo replied.

“Don’t worry too much about it, Ven. He’ll be alright.” Romulus assured, giving Pascal a series of little bounces on his knee, hoping to stir a giddy giggle like the rest of his granddaughters who were always eager to climb atop him. “You and Roma didn’t talk for a long time, only to each other, and look, you both turned out great.”
