Emerson didn't think himself to be very aloof, what with every day tasks and matters requiring a certain amount of attention at all times; however, since Grey had left, Emerson hadn't been able to...focus.
Emerson was currently walking through the park, having just finished watching a captioned movie at the theater, and as per usual, he had Grey on his mind. He'd certainly be lying if he said he didn't miss her. He'd also be lying if he said he still didn't feel like things were set quite right between the both of them when Grey had left. He worried that maybe she was still upset, despite her assurances that she wasn't. He was worried that maybe she went away because of his actions and not Kisa's, despite her assurances that wasn't the case.
He was worried, he was confused, but mostly, he missed her.
God, he missed her unlike he'd ever missed anyone before. He missed her smile, he missed her touch, he missed every unruly hair on her head. He just...missed being around her. Emerson was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't even notice the crosswalk was anything but ready for him as he began into the road and right into the path of an oncoming car driving like a bat out of hell.
And right into him.

It didn't take long for Emerson's family to get the call that he'd been rushed to the hospital following an accident. As such, the whole family hurried over to wait for further news and to be there for him. As soon as they got there, they were told the latest news which was that despite the initial thought that things were critical, Emerson would pull through, though not without a few dings.
He'd cracked a few ribs and had more than just a few bruises inside and out, but beyond that he was...well...okay.
Upon hearing the news, Irving took the time to shoot a text to Grey.
Hey, there was an accident with Emerson. He's in the hospital. He'll live, but thought I should let you know. - Irving _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Grey had been having a peaceful time in Oregon. She'd kept her promise to correspond with Irving and Emerson, even Shika (he was on her side after everything). But mostly she was trying to commit time to herself, to figure out what she wanted and what she was going to do come the new school year. Her parents worried for her and begged her to let them help in any way, coming to be with her in Portland or buying her a house in Canby; but Grey was fine. Morning tea and breakfast alone, jogging and gym, she had even been tutoring kids in Portland for some of her own cash.
She missed Canby though, more than that, she missed Emerson. Grey missed stealing his hoodies and loitering the frozen yogurt place, playful shoves, picnics and caption movies. Her life didn't feel the same as it did before and it was because Emerson hadn't been apart of her day to day anymore. But she wouldn't have to miss him anymore, she was already packing her bags to come visit Emerson before she moved back officially.
While there was an impulse to text him, she opted to make it a surprise. She was singing along to the radio while she packed but her phone went off notifying her of a text. She paused to see who it was, Irving, and smiled. One could only assume Irving was just giving her a daily nudge, a reminder that he was her favorite chaotic evil. But that smiled dropped to a frown quickly upon reading the text.
Immediately there was a panic. Though not finished she closed up her suit case and quickly slipped shoes on, any shoes that were laying on the floor. Her mind was in a flurry and she had a thousand questions. But instead of asking any one of them, she grabbed her bag and simply replied..
"I'm coming."

The travel from Portland to Canby wasn't super long, but it felt longer than usual as she anxiously bit her nails; staring out of the train window. While it only took a brisk wind to make Grey cry, she unsurprisingly found herself sniveling here and there as she waited for her stop. Irving already said Emerson would be okay, that should've been all she needed to hear. But it wasn't, she wanted to see him for herself. Grey couldn't help but wonder if the accident would've even happened if she was there? But even more so, she couldn't shake the awful thought of what had it been worse, what if she wouldn't see Emerson ever again?
Guilt was setting in. She felt selfish for having ever left in the first place, let alone leaving things how she did. At the time Grey believed everything was fine, they were still friends and she was coming back. But that wasn't how it should've been, Grey should've stayed and been with the only person who mattered this much.
She should've been with Emerson.
Pursing her lip, she began to cry a little (more). Everything felt like such a mess, and she felt so stupid. She fought so hard to put up with Kisa and make an effort with her, but Grey was spending every day and some nights with Emerson. He was her first thought when she woke up and who she thought of before she fell asleep; she wasn't really with Kisa. She was with Emerson, and it took too long for it to set in. But she was realizing now, she loved him.
Emerson was finally getting situated in a room and while his and Irving's parents fussed over him (which, really, what were they going to do for him that the doctor's hadn't already done besides gripe?), Irving was out in the hallway, anxiously pacing as he waited for Grey to HOPEFULLY show up. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Grey took an Uber from the train straight to the hospital, she didn't even bother to stop and drop off her luggage anywhere and just brought it with her. A helpful nurse pointed her in the direction of Emerson's room and she took off sprinting down the hall towards a pacing Irving.
Irving looked up and hardly missed a beat as he went to meet Grey down the hall, practically throwing himself at her.
"Jesus Christ, I'm so glad you're here now." He said, his voice shaking from all the nerves from the situation. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"He's alright, I mean, he's coming in and out and seems to be in a lot of pain, but he's gonna live." Irving explained as they peeled apart. "They said it's mostly just some cracked ribs, some, well, a lot, of bruising internal and external." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"You can probably step in now. My folks are in there, but, I mean, I'm sure they'll step out for a bit." Irving nodded. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"No, it'll be fine. Seriously." Irving nodded, reaching to grab at Grey's hand then. "Besides he'll want to see you. He's missed you a lot." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"Oh man, you don't even know. All he talks about is you and how much he misses you." Irving said, giving a light smile as they headed over to the room. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Before even entering the room, Irving paused when he could hear Emerson give a pained whine inside the room, sounding very much like a wounded animal. This whine was quickly followed by some crooning on their mother's part as she hovered over him to fuss a bit.
"They're bringing you more medicine." She crooned and signed at Emerson as he laid in bed, a miserable grimace on his bruise and cut riddled face.
Meanwhile, their father stood nearby, looking shifty and anxious, but not stepping forward to offer the same comfort his wife did.
"Mom, Dad, Emerson's friend, Grey, is here." Irving spoke up as they entered. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
