The relationship between humans and supernaturals had been one that was always changing, from medieval violence and folklore, to a quiet separation and life apart, and yet again back to violence. The bang heard throughout the world was the catalyst for hate crimes between both groups. Among the affected were the fae. Faeries had lived a mostly remote life away from humans and even a lot of other supernaturals depending on the court the belonged to if any. But it didn’t matter, there was a secret war happening between humans and faeries that was only brought to life too little too late. Faerie rings were being destroyed, whole courts set ablaze and faerie trails destroyed to prevent any escape. Church bells sang out during the massacre’s, wings cut and and pinned to tree’s in victory.
Being that faeries were normally concealed in their own little worlds, word reached the society too late for most. The heavily wooded forests and hillsides were burnt to ash and faerie bodies littered amongst the black glass. The survivors were few and far between, though the Society was thorough in their search, all the while juggling reuniting families and also announcing deaths of recognized loved ones. Temporary faerie colonies were built, city blocks fenced off to offer some sort of protection from the human world which seemed pointless. Humans had drug them out and into the light, and there would be no going back.
The colonies were as ‘nice’ as they could be. Managing a whole new set of problems put strain on the Society’s budget. The tents offered no amenities beyond shelter from rain and snow and a thin veil from prying eyes. Priya herself often stayed in her tent with the lanterns off, so not to reveal her lonely shadow; inviting an violence into her ‘home.’ Laws were passed to pacify the radicals, faeries were not to fly, wings to be concealed always and taped down. But it did not pacify anyone, faeries outed and caught outside of their colonies were murdered in the street, unable to get away. The Society was doing their best to see the law abolished, but it was hard to make human politicians understand or care.
Priya in her life was mostly quiet, she kept to herself and made no trouble at home or at court. She played music for the Queen sometimes and kept appearances at festivities. Her family not much different, content with a life in anonymity. But the time for anonymity would slip away fast. Priya awoke one late night to screaming and yelling, her blue eyes squinting and watering from smoke under her door and the shadow of flames flickering on her walls from the outside. Looking out her window it was chaos, she watched; petrified as she witnessed scattered carnage. A brick, came sailing through her window, narrowly missing her thanks for her brother having tackling her to the floor. Somehow, they escaped, no other explanation beyond sheer luck. Her brother hugged her tightly, escaping the ring and nestling into a fox den to wait out the bloodbath, peeking out beyond the grass in the morning; no trees left to block out the suns light.
Hard didn’t begin to describe the feeling when observing the brutal carnage. When they fled in the night there was no time to look for their Mother, and creeping amongst the ash, stepping over burnt bodies, a body mostly unrecognizable with a long pink braid, laid ten feet away from where their home used to be. Surely, that was their mother. She did not cry, Priya couldn’t reflect on the memory of the crumpled form and describe being sad. Sitting in a Society office, wrapped in a security blanket while a witch cleaned off her face, she didn’t feel scared or sad either. Seeing her older brother, nestled in the corner of their tent, quiet and unmoving for the first few days in the colony didn’t make her sad either.
It filled her with rage.
The time for anonymity was indeed over.
—
Priya rarely ventured outside of the colony at first, it worried her to leave her brother alone and it was unnerving being in unfamiliar territory. But when her binder arrived from the Society to hold down her wings, she knew she couldn’t wait to confront humanity any longer. This was absolutely sick. When she first began venturing out she did so very quietly, never going far from the colony. She didn’t wear her binder but she did hide her wings under a long trench coat while getting her bearings in the city. If those first days she heard the rallied cries of both anti supernatural and anti human rallies, this gave her confidence. There were supernaturals who were tired of hiding and unafraid to fight back, she would have supporters no matter what she planned to do.
By now, she had a feel for the neighborhood, it didn’t appear any locals suspected her of being a faerie in spite of her cotton candy pink hair or her petite stature. But it seemed that some humans could also be petite and liked to color their hair bright colors, which was good, Priya wasn’t prepared to add any more variables to her disguise beyond the coat. It was late, after dark, an angry man with a megaphone could be heard down the block and Priya hurried towards the sound. The voice got louder as she got closer to it’s source, it was in the park; a white man with a buzz cut was standing on a stone statue of a donor of the park, spitting into his megaphone as he spoke.
“These creatures don’t belong here! Our city was already overpopulated and overrun with our own kind, and now literal monsters are here to eat us and edge us out of our home!” He yelled, people cheering and clapping as Priya moved through the crowd.
She could feel her cheeks burning as she got closer.
How dare he? She had a home, and humans took it from her.
“They can’t be trusted! We cannot coexist! If you turn on any news channel, you will see back to back reports, werewolves eating families, witches, in our schools with our children! Faeries sneaking into homes and stealing from innocent, hard working American people!” He continued.
More cheering, why was Priya surprised? This is the true nature of the human race, they were the monsters and they would never change.
Priya brushed past people, shoving angrily as she pushed through, there was a bench opposite of the statue the man was standing on, she climbed up pointed a finger at him.
“Human’s took away everything from me!” She screamed, her face red and hot with anger. Her pointy ears were concealed by her fluffy curls but surely they were red too. “Human’s burned down our homes, killed our families- And they do it to each other! Human’s are the monsters!” She continued, people in the crowd began grabbing and pulling at her, screaming over her.
What they didn’t know was she could get away, humans could never fly. She dropped her coat and her her wings fanned out, large and beautiful. They were mostly opaque, but in any light they shimmered and sparkled, the glare off of them cool colored; blues, greens and purples. The webbing of them in a similar pattern to a hornet and they moved with the same animation as one as she leapt off the bench and hovered above the crowd.
Unlike many supernaturals after the big bang, Il Soon and Yoo In Park never truly had much to lose.
Like Haneul, the Park twins were born in their native Korea shortly after the incident in New York. They were born in the time that was most turbulent for their kind all around the world, and as a result, they were born to widow, Ra Lim Park, who met her own end before the twins even had the chance to know her face or speak her name. They had lost everything before they knew loss. Fortunately for them, however, before their birth, their mother had made kind with a group of supernaturals in Seoul, particularly a haechi named Ki Moon Son, who'd just had a son of his own with his human bride. Upon Ra Lim's death, Ki Moon and his wife took the babes in, determined to raise them as their own, though fate had other plans.
After the death of his wife, Ki Moon was left with the three boys and, fearing for their safety, decided to go to the apparent supernatural hub of the world, where all the chaos had erupted and was being rectified: New York City.
It was tricky business raising three young boys, especially as their supernatural attributes came to head. With one boy painfully growing horns and being in a constant state of discomfort and a pair of boys turning into fire hounds and causing fiery destruction in their wake, things were never easy, but they were never truly bad either. Ki Moon loved his boys fiercely, often reminding them that the love for them was extended from far beyond themselves but their mothers and the Park twin's father as well, which was why it was particularly devastating when one day Ki Moon simply vanished. The boys were still young so when they came home from school with no note, no phone call, no explanation, they waited...and waited...and waited until they realized Ki Moon was not returning and they had no one left.
With no one left to care for them, the boys decided to take care of each other. Han quickly embraced his role as the "eldest" brother and begged for under the counter work at a local Korean market in their neighborhood. The owner, a sympathizer, let him clean fish and clean up the meat counter after close. Han was often sent home with tuppers full of sides from the owner herself so the boys could eat. Il Soon and Yoo In helped supplement their income by getting jobs at a restaurant not too far from the apartment. Unlike Han, both boys were human passing, so they were able to work as wait staff, though the restaurant owner seemed kindly enough to Han whenever he came by to pick them up after work.
The threesome remained just that until they met Olezka, another supernatural refugee who was orphaned much like them, followed by Van, another one of them by that same merit. All five boys crammed into the single room apartment Ki Moon had procured for the boys when they first came to the states and lived that way for months until they all saved enough to get a large enough space for all of them.
Things were never easy, but Il Soon, and the rest of the brood, were all happy enough, though, as tensions began to boil again between the humans and supernatural, they began to worry.
Loss was something Il Soon wasn't too familiar with, it felt more like a distant memory, but he, and the rest of the boys, agreed that it was something they never wanted to endure again.
---
Il Soon was just getting off his shift at work, his apron still tied at his waist as he counted out his dues for the faction, which he and the boys all contributed as much as they could, out of his tips while walking home. He was tired, he'd had a long night the night before and it was busy all throughout lunch. He had eaten on the fly, slurping up japchae and picking at a small selection of sides he'd gathered for himself in the wait station between orders, but he was contemplating stopping by the deli around the corner from the apartment to get a sub to snack on. Maybe he'd even get a few for dinner for him and the boys. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Priya fluttered above the crowd, zipping forward and back to avoid the onslaught of things being thrown at her. Thankfully it wasn’t much (at first), receipts, hats; miscellaneous pocket and/or purse contents. The crowd roared, it was deafening how much louder it got, Priya couldn’t even hear the man with his megaphone anymore. It wasn’t just people getting louder, but more flocking towards the commotion. It was getting dark, she had to squint at first to see some supernaturals had flocked as well, a flurry of teeth and claws, high up it just looked like a swarm of ants.
Then, the sound of gunfire rang in the air followed by sirens. Surely a combination of human police and Society authorities. But by now there was no where to land, not within the park. It felt risky to fly out and back to the camp, but after a couple more gunshots it seemed Priya had no choice. She zipped up high, she hoped it would be harder to hit her with any objects or for the Society to ID her. Priya would not get far though, in her scouting, what she did not account for was churches.
It varied for courts, but hers in particular were affected by the ringing of church bells. It only took the first toll to immediately jar her, her vision went blurry and all she could hear was the bells. For a faerie of her court, to hear church bells gave a relative experience to vertigo. Priya was dizzy, nauseous and flying blind; or rather falling, losing altitude fast.
Il Soon just so happened to be walking passed one of the entrances to the park when he heard a great clamor. He furrowed his brows curiously. There wasn't a faction rally today, so what was this all about? _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Priya was able to adjust and save herself before dropping into the crowd, but she was still fluttering above clumsily, trying hard to get her bearings. She was just about onto the street outside the park when something finally hit her. A large rock hit her in the back of the head, knocking her out of the air though she was already flying low from the church bells. She yelped and everything went dark, she hit the ground and rolled onto the sidewalk, vulnerable and unconscious.
Il Soon was still squinting at the spectacle taking place and had just determined that what he was seeing was indeed an all out brawl between a group of humans, supernaturals, and their respective authorities when suddenly he noticed a girl, a fae, fluttering weakly above the crowd. He watched as she bobbed and dipped in the air, perhaps wounded or at least incapacitated, and just as he began towards her, he watched as she was struck from behind and began plummeting towards the ground.
"Ah! Shit!" He stumbled forward hurriedly then, hoping to catch the girl, or at least cushion her fall. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Tragically Priya had already hit the ground, having gotten enough speed to roll at Il Soon’s feet; the back of her head bleeding and her wings appeared crumpled from the roll, but they still twitched violently, wanting to carry away Priya’s unconscious form.
Il Soon rushed over to the girl and stood over her, hands moving to touch her but jerking back in worry that he might make things worse. That was a thing wasn't it? He looked up and around, wondering if anyone else had saw, if anyone else would help, but when he saw how immersed everyone was in the fight, he decided he'd risk his chances and crouched down to gather the girl in his arms, as gently and carefully as he could.
"Miss? Miss? Can you hear me?" He gave her a gently shake as he stood up with her. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"Aish." Il Soon muttered as he looked around, still in a panic and still hopeful he'd find someone to help them. After a few fretful moments of this, and watching as the crowd was coming closer and closer as the fighting spread, he decided to turn heel and hurry off with the girl. He needed to get her somewhere safe and the apartment wasn't too far. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Priya down for the count, though she could feel the dull ache of her head even in her dream. She dreamt of her home, back at court with her family. Her mother baking in their kitchen and her brother reading on the stoop outside their home. If Priya wasn’t due to preform for the queen she would be sunbathing in the hammock outside their home, gentle rocking in the breeze; she could practically feel the cradle of the woven fabric. Though in truth, it was actually her petite form being carried away to safety.
In an apartment that was as full as Il Soon and the boys', there was almost always someone home at any given time. This was not the case today and Il Soon was cursing the fact.
He carried the girl back to his apartment, earning his fair share of looks and gasps when people saw her wings. He stopped about halfway to take off his apron and haphazardly covered up her back to avoid inciting another riot due to her outwardly supernatural appearance. When they reached the apartment, it was completely empty. Yoo In was supposed to be out with Van helping with a project for the faction, Olezka was apparently, according to a note, at the bookstore he worked at covering a shift. Though he hadn't been told, Il Soon was almost positive Han was out with Ava, as was typical. Which meant Il Soon had to play nurse all by himself.
He didn't want to make a mess on the couch as it was the common area, so he decided to take the girl to his and Yoo In's room. The room was the largest in the apartment and the only one with an attached bathroom, though when they moved in they decided that it would only be fair that the largest room would go to the twins as they could share the space. Their beds were at separate ends of the room and while Yoo In's side of the room was clean and kept, Il Soon's was a little worse for wear. He'd just done laundry a few days ago and still hadn't folded or put any of it away, so there was a pile of clothes he'd been picking through at the foot of the bed, some of it spilling onto the floor even. He was up late last night trying to find an old record and, as a result, had record sleeves upon record sleeves spilled on the floor near his record player on an old footstool.
He kicked his clothes onto the floor and laid the girl down before scrambling to get the first aid kit from the kitchen where it was kept. He grabbed a clean dish towel while he was at it and then hurried back, chucking the kit on the floor by his bed before running to the bathroom to wet the towel so he could begin cleaning the girls head. He hoped that it wasn't serious enough to merit him calling the Society for a doctor. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
It was a decent gnash although it probably wouldn’t warrant a doctors visit. If Il Soon was incapable, it wasn’t anything her brother couldn’t stitch up for her at camp. She’d of course be in trouble with the Society for inciting a riot, so a doctor’s visit wasn’t preferable. Priya winced and weakly shook her head at the sensation of the wet towel, penetrating her dream, though she didn’t wake (yet).
Il Soon stopped when he felt then girl shaking her head as he gently cradled her head, dabbing at the gash. He peered to look at her face, touching her cheek and turning her face to look at her.
“Miss? Are you okay?” He asked her. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
There was some mild stirring, Priya’s eyes began to open slowly but snapped open wide as she turned her face slightly to to bite the strangers hand. Her teeth sinking into the fleshy part of his thumb.
