Yoo In pinked a little himself, embarrassed. He reached up to rub the back of his neck and feigned a smile.

“Oh, yeah, sorry, of course. You’ve been busy and they probably want you home, huh?” He said.

“Yeah, it’s not a very lax curfew.” Manon chuckled a little, unsure what to say.

Manon wasn’t particularly good at reading signals, that and she never expects to be flirted with. She’d dated a few guys here or there, mostly accompanying her cousins on group dates. She’d been asked to dances a couple of times too but nothing serious. She felt like she embarrassed Yoo In, but she also wondered if she was misreading the room. Yoo In seemed like a confident person, he couldn’t be wounded by a gentle rejection from someone like Manon.

“I’ll uh, get you back another time.” She offered sheepishly.

“Nah, it’s okay. You don’t have to do that.” Yoo In said, still flush with embarrassment. Before he could say anything else, the speaker crackled overhead and announced their stop. “Looks like our stop is next.” He shifted gears.

Manon sighed, a bit deflated. But she hoisted up her bag over her shoulder, readying to exit.

Yoo In went ahead of Manon, offering himself as a buffer for the crowd. When the doors opened, he stepped out and parted the crowd just enough for him and Manon. They headed across the platform and to the stairs leading up to the street above. The whole time, he cast little glances backwards to make sure Manon was still there, but didn’t say much else by the way of conversation and certainly didn’t try for eye contact.

Manon tried to keep up, she felt her bag get jostled by a passing body, causing her to reach out and pinch onto the sleeve of his shirt for support.

Yoo In turned when he felt the gentle pinch on his shirt sleeve. When he saw Manon struggling, he slowed instead, joining at her side despite still being very pink in the cheeks.

"Sorry, I'll slow down a little." He said to her with a little head bob.

“Thanks.” Manon chuckled weakly, though she didn’t release his sleeve until they were out on the street again.

This did not go unnoticed as they breached the surface. Yoo In, though still embarrassed by the previous 'rejection', was a little bit pleased by the sleeve pinching.

"What's the cross street of your place?" He asked, daring to look down then.

"That's not too far." Yoo In nodded, tampering down his embarrassment and flush enough to muster a smile down at Manon. "Shall we go?"

“Yes please.” Manon chirped happily again, feeling her own embarrassment start to fade.

Yoo In pressed onward with Manon, not too familiar with the neighborhood but savvy enough to follow the grid street system as well as cues from Manon. His embarrassment had threatened to throw him off his rhythm, but eventually he regained equilibrium. So what if Manon wasn't interested in going out with him? Ava wouldn't like it and would be mad if she had anyways, and, besides, at least he could have someone to talk about books with among other things even if it was just as friends.

Right?

The twosome meandered through the neighborhood until they came up on the cross street and Yoo In looked to Manon.

"Which house is yours? Do you want me to make sure you make it to the door?" He asked.

“Yes please if you don’t mind.” Manon smiled.

Their neighborhood was fairly ritzy; full of expensive and and model homes. Her townhome wasn’t especially fancy, but had all the elements of home. As the walked down the street, Manon’s home came into view. It was clearly Manon’s house, because Ava was sitting on the stoop; cheek in palm, looking...perplexed to say the least.

“Ava!” Manon waved and called. “Look who I ran into!” Nodding at Yoo In.
