"Don't be sorry, Jai. This isn't your fault." Romano said as he stretched for the chair at the desk in the room to wedge under the handle of the closet. He hurried around the room in a fuss, trying to recover Jai's phone all the while coming down from his rage at Joy.

He would fuss over Jai as soon as he knew help was on the way.

He kicked some things out of his way here and there until he eventually saw the phone skittered on the floor under some of the wreckage Joy had made. He scrambled for it and once it was in his hand he called for 911.

After a brief explanation and the assurance that someone was on their way, he set the phone aside and let out a exhale of relief, finally able to relax some and focus on Jai.

He got down on his knees in front of Jai and reached out to gently touch at his face. He was wearing a ratty old sweater from when he played soccer his freshman year of high school. He used the frayed wrist of the sweater to cover the heel of his palm as he tried to dab at the cut on Jai's face.

"Are you okay? Is this the only wound she gave you?" He asked softly.

“I don’t-I don’t think so.” Jai sputtered, wincing a little at the forehead touch.

"Okay, alright, we'll just have to have the EMTs give you a good look over, okay?" Romano nodded as he continued to look over Jai for any other exterior injuries. "I'm sorry this happened." He said.

“Me too.” Jai sniveled, flinching weakly as Joy began banging on the closet door.

Romano frowned at the door and stretched out a long leg to kick at it once before looking back at Jai.

"Do you want to wait outside for everyone to get here?" He asked him.

“If I can get up, yes.” Jai answered quietly as Joy kicked right back from the inside, letting out a yell. She continued to kick at the door, the chair wavering under the knob as she did so.

Romano let out an annoyed huff at Joy but offered his hands to Jai to help him up from the floor.

"You can go sit out there. I'll stay here and make sure she behaves." He said.

Jai allowed Romano to help him up, trying hard not to take his eyes off the closet door. He kept holding onto Romano, for support as well as comfort.

“I don’t-I don’t think I want to be alone.” He admitted quietly.

Romano wanted to insist that he should sit and make sure Joy didn't get out, but when Jai showed no signs of releasing him he relented.

"Okay. I'll go sit with you." He nodded. "I'll wait with you until everyone gets here and stay with you for as long as you need."

The paramedics arrived and did some light examination before determining that it was best for Jai to go to the hospital for some follow up testing. It looked like he may have a concussion, and his face definitely needed stitched up. Jai held tightly onto Romano the whole time, still trembling with fear as he could still hear Joy kicking at the closet inside. It was a relief when he could climb into the ambulance and drive away from the home, though with Romano in the ambulance with him, Jai was certain Joy wouldn’t be there when they returned.

Romano had called both his parents and Verona once he and Jai reached the hospital, though it was almost impossible to do with Jai refusing to let him go. Though it was hardly something that bothered Romano, despite the situation.

He'd gladly hold Jai's hand any day of the week.

He sat with Jai throughout everything, when he got his stitches and even when the police came to collect a statement from them. He was still sitting with him now as they waited for Verona and any updates from the hospital staff regarding Jai's head injury.

Jai continued to hold Romano’s hand as he sat on the edge of the hospital bed. His face was stitched up now, a long slice that went across his face, starting from the left side of his face, near his mouth, across his nose and ending just below his right eye. His head was wrapped as well, the doctor confirmed he didn’t have a concussion, but they wanted to be sure there wasn’t any long term damage to his brain.

He was quiet. He hadn’t said much beyond giving his statement. He barely spoke to Verona when she was on the phone, he only nodded to himself when she confirmed there was no one in the house when she and other police arrived there.

The whole situation had certainly put Romano on edge, but admittedly he was more tense sitting in the room with a solemnly silent Jai. He frowned as he reached over with his free hand to fluff softly at some of Jai's hair, fingers careful of his injuries and bandages.

"Jai...is there anything I can do to make you comfortable right now?" He asked softly.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so...I’m just so tired, I want to go to bed but I don’t want to go home...” Jai admitted quietly.

“Maybe if you tell your mom she’ll let you stay over at my place. If you want. I know it’s close by to...well everything that happened, but... I don’t know. Maybe it’ll be enough for now.” Romano tried as he continued to pet at Jai’s hair.
