“You would?” Arte asked, a little surprised still but the more Sal insisted he liked her, the harder it was to not believe it.

"Absolutely." Sal said firmly. "I keep telling you, but I really like hanging out with you. I like it even more now that you seem to be liking it too."

Arte laughed a little, relaxed and feeling honest.

“It’s just so strange. We’re so different, you’d never looked at me before. There are prettier, interesting girls out there.” She admitted with a lazy shrug. This observation wasn’t meant to be negative or fish for anything. By now she could believe Sal liked her, at least in some capacity. But it was the ‘why?’ that was hard to understand.

"I like that we're different though. I like that you have such distinct interests. I also think you're more pretty and interesting than you think. At least I think so." Sal explained in earnest as they walked along. He paused as they exited the building. "But I'd like to know what you thought of me, Arte."

She sort of bobbed her head thoughtfully, trying to think of the proper way to articulate a response.

“I used to think you were reliable and earnest. You mean well and you try hard.” She began. “I still think you’re all those things. But in addition to those things, I’ve learned that even though you’re a big dummy, you really see people.” She added before pulling her bag around. Unzipping it and reaching in, she pulled the book out that Sal got her.

“When you got me this, I felt like you really saw me. I’d like to really see you that way too.” She explained in earnest.

Sal felt himself flush at Arte's words and as she pulled out the book, he gaped a little, surprised. He had put thought into the gift, of course, but Arte was so subtle in the way she showed her true feelings that he was a bit worried that maybe he hadn't chosen well enough. It was both a pleasant surprise as well as endearing that she had apparently liked it so much that she carried it with her.

"You're...much more articulate than me." Sal chuckled, still pink in the cheeks as he reached out to touch softly at one of Arte's cheeks, a gesture that was just a little more bold than his usual touch. "I'd really like for you to see me too, Arte."

Arte smiled softly, it was a change of pace to see Sal pink and at a loss for words. But she certainly didn’t mind it, and she didn’t shrink away from the touch though it was one foreign to her.

“I’ll do my best.” She said, feeling a little flutter in her chest as they stood there looking at each other.

Sal stood for a moment, feeling his heart beating in his own chest and the heat tingling in his cheeks, before he leaned in to place a testing kiss at Arte's lips.

Arte’s breath hitched a little in surprise, but she didn’t recoil. Though she hadn’t kissed anyone since high school, this felt right. She leaned into the kiss, reaching up to mirror Sal’s touch; her fingertips lightly touching his cheeks, unsure but encouraging.

Sal smiled when he felt Arte's fingers pressing to his face. It was a relief as well as encouraging as the deepened the kiss for something a little more than just testing, but kept mild due to his own mindfulness of PDA. His palms settled on Arte's cheeks, thumb's stroking softly at her face. He had kissed plenty of girls before, but nothing felt this pure or this right.

Arte smiled a little into the kiss, her own hand resting more comfortably on his cheek as they kissed. She could feel her cheeks were pleasantly warm, as she pulled away a little. Looking up at him through pale lashes, unsure of what to say; if anything.

Sal took a moment to look down at Arte, his eyes like little crescent moons as he smiled the same way as his mother.

"So...how about that picture, huh?" He chuckled a little, clearly giddy from their kiss.
