“Hm I think they’re all a little different. Mine are really different. But they’re nice, Dada (Lazlo) is loud but he’s a lot of fun, he wrestles with me and plays catch with me. Daddy (Amulius) he’s really nice and sweet (said no one ever). He takes me everywhere and shows me new things all the time.” Norah explained. “What’s your Mommy like? She’s pretty.”

“She’s the prettiest. She’s even prettier than all my aunties.” Nic said, puffing with pride as his mother’s beauty was acknowledged. “She’s really nice to us, but sometimes she yells because my older brothers are naughty. She’s a good cook. Sometimes she plays her music and dances with us. I like it best when she dances with me.” Nic explained as they entered his moms room.

Constance’s room was exactly what one would probably expect after having spent five minutes with the woman. There were dried flowers pinned up all around the room, lace and thin fabrics draped over the lights and window to make soft light. There were several chunky crystals in the windowsill and a long desk that had a record player and several jarred remedies she had been packaging the night before. By her bedside was a little table with a picture of Nic’s grandma, Della, and another picture of Constance and all her boys at Christmas the year before. The floor was a chaotic mess of discarded shawls and floral kimonos and one the back of the door was a hook holding all of her chunky necklaces.

Nic paid no mind and went over to the TV and turned everything on. He knew how to do it all by himself after having watched his mom do it enough. He got everything turned on and put in before crawling onto his mom’s rumpled bed spread and gestured for Norah to do the same.

Norah looked around the room briefly before climbing up onto the bed with Nic, kicking off her shoes as she did so. Knowing no shoes on the furniture at home was an important rule, she did it everywhere.

“Mom said Mister Amulius was helping her with her magic. Does your daddy do magic too? Do you?” Nic asked.

“No, it’s just Daddy Amulius, Dada is just a regular human.” Norah explained.

“Oh...how come you smell like me? Mom says that I’m a werewoof and that we all have a smell, but I don’t know what that means. Are you a werewoof? Do you know what that means?” Nic asked, wanting to just talk with Norah. She was very pretty and she was very nice.

“I am. We all have a special smell, I think it’s to find each other for like, pack stuff?” Norah answered, not totally sure herself.

Nic's whole face pinched up in "disgust" at the thought.

"I don't want to be in their pack. They're all gross and mean." He decided.

“Well then...” Norah looked around thoughtfully, contemplating. “I don’t see why we couldn’t be a pack.” She decided with a nod.

“I think you just look out for each other. So if someone’s bothering you, you tell me and I’ll beat them up.” Norah said. “And if I need help, I’ll be able to ask you to help me.”
