Bambi helped get the socks on the kids and opened up their chips for them before grabbing Amulius's shirt sleeve, tugging it lightly to indicate stepping away for a moment.
"What did they say? Is he alright? How serious is it?" She asked quietly once they were turned away. She fussed with the lukewarm coffee cup in her hands. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Bad,” Amulius began, pinching at the bridge of his nose anxiously. “They don’t really know what happened, something went wrong. They found him dumped in an alley all tore up and poisoned. Joshua said the poison or venom or whatever was the worse part, but they’re removing some of his intestines now.” Amulius explained, still rubbing at his face.
“But Joshua made it sound like he’ll make it, he’s just in probably the worst shape he’s ever been to put it mildly.”
"Oh my god..." Bambi gasped, feeling her heart sink into the pit of her stomach, which was, by this time, a roiling mess of anxiety. She went to ask similar questions to the ones Amulius had asked Joshua, but was stopped when a little hand reached out to grab at the hem of her shirt. Unsurprisingly, it was Buck.
"Mama... Dad... where's Boss Man now? He's okay, right? Can we see him?" He asked, his expression worried and confused. "He's always alright, so...so they should let us see him." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Amulius looked to Bambi quickly, unsure what to say.
“Uh well, he’s needing some extra care. So the doctors are taking care of him right now, but Joshua is going to find out when we can see him.” Amulius answered quickly, putting on a reassuring smile.
"What kind of extra care? I want to see him. I want to see him now, please." Buck said, his lips beginning to quiver again and eyes becoming moist.
Bambi frowned and crouched down, setting her coffee on the floor beside her before reaching to cup Buck's face.
"Baby, Dad has to get taken care of right now. As soon as we can see him, I promise you, we'll all go see him, alright?" Bambi tried, but Buck jerked away, becoming upset and frustrated. Ever a Maniac.
"Why not now! I want to see him now! Whenever Uncle Shika gets hurt he gets better right away, and Boss Man is way stronger than him!" He yelled.
Bambi looked to Amulius for help. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.

“Your Dad, is arguably the strongest person I know, but he’s just that. He’s only a person, a human person. So sometimes he needs more care than someone like me or Shika.” Amulius tried to explain.
"I don't understand, I want to see him now!" Buck said, his tail flicking irritably as he stomped his foot. Hot tears streaked his cheeks.
"Baby, it's not that simple...it's like Dad said. Your Dad's...different than us, honey. He was hurt and needs time to heal up. It's not easy for him like it is for us." She explained.
Buck still looked lost.
"I don't understand. How is he different? You always tell me I'm just like him, so...so how is he different?" He demanded. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Amulius rubbed the back of his neck, exhaling deeply through his nose. There probably wasn’t an easy way to have this conversation.
“You guys are incredibly similar, like you fell out of his butt. That being said, there is one pretty significant difference. Boss man, is a human, a mortal human. You, your mom, Norah and I, we are not. So our bodies age and heal differently.” Amulius began to explain.
Buck was quiet for a long moment. His anger and lashing out had quickly subsided into confused thought.
"What's... what's mortal mean? What is that?" He asked then.
"Well... baby, that means... well... your dad... his body isn't... built to last like mine, or yours, or sister's." Bambi explained, reaching out again to take Buck's hands. She ran her thumbs over his little knuckles. "Dad's body won't last forever and ever, he has to be very careful and take special care of it when it's like...this."
Buck looked to Amulius for further explanation, or perhaps refute. Maybe he understood, but he wanted Bambi to be wrong. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Your Mom is right, Dad has to take special care. His body is fragile, though it doesn’t really feel that way...Your Dad won’t be around forever, he’s okay and he’s here today but, that’s what mortal means. That they won’t be here forever.” Amulius tried to explain.
"But...what happens to him? Where does he go if he's not here forever?" Buck asked then, though, it almost seemed like he had an idea.
"Well, baby... one day, a day a long, long, long ways away, he will... sort of go to sleep and not wake up." Bambi explained. "He'll go back to the earth, just like everything else, and he won't be with us physically anymore."
Buck stared, sad and a bit mortified.
"He won't...be with me? But...but who will...who's going to read to me and Norah? Who's going to make banana pancakes? Who... who's going to take care of me?" He blubbered a bit at the end. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Well baby, Dads not going away for a really long time! He can still do all those things with you, but either way, you’ve got me and your mom too. You’re very lucky that you get to have all three of us, we’ll try hard to fill in the gaps for your Dad when it’s needed. But like we said, Boss Man will still be with us, with you, for a really long time. So you don’t really need to worry about that.” Amulius said.
“But it’s not the same!” Buck mustered before reaching up to fuss at his face and letting out a proper wail. “I don’t want him to be different than us!” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Babe, I know it’s very scary to think about, especially right now, but it will be okay. Dad isn’t going anywhere any time soon. He’ll be with you until you’re all grown up, baby. You and Norah still have so much time with him and we should all be grateful for that. We should focus on that and not something that isn’t going to happen for a long time still.” Bambi crooned, reaching out to pet Buck’s unruly orange curls, the same as his fathers.
While Buck continued to weep in Amulius’s arms for quite some time, Joshua eventually reappeared, pausing when he heard the still sniveling from Buck and Bambi and Amulius both trying to console him.
“Hey, maybe it’s not a good time, but I thought you should know that they’re wrapping up soon. They usually don’t let people in so soon after something like this, but I assured them that if they didn’t let you in to see him, he’s certainly busy himself out to see you as soon as he’s awake.” Joshua explained, reaching up to scrub at the back of his neck. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
