“Not here? Does that mean we have a secondary destination?” Darla asked before going to look back at the menu then. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Don’t goof it then. I want dessert.” Darla joked before making a thoughtful sound. “I think I want to try the lobster then. I’ve never had lobster.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
It had been a few weeks since the chaos that was Dewey and Dimitra's wedding and things had been hectic for Ace and the Nikitin crime family to say the least.
The family as a whole hardly spent time licking wounds and rather went straight to work on cleaning up the mess Matvey and his group of usurpers had created, which included paying certain people off, getting others to agree to gag orders, and even killing some. Ace, being both Riley and Adrik's right hand man as well as the father of the groom whose wedding had been ruined, had a lofty role in all of these tasks. This left him little time to spend with Darla, though he promised that as soon as his upcoming retirement happened they would go on a vacation with just the two of them...and perhaps one more.
Ace and Darla had been together for several good years, and while they were always happy with the way things were with just the two of them and Dewey, they had recently started talking about adding onto their little family. Ace had initially shown no signs of wanting any additional children in the beginning of their relationship, but when Darla decided to bring it up recently, he simply had looked over at her over his cup of coffee and smiled and told her a surprising, "okay". They had started trying immediately, however, with the announcement of Dewey and Dimitra's nuptials, their efforts had been put on the back burner for the time being.
So much for that, however, as Darla was currently sitting on the edge of the bathtub in her and Ace's apartment, elbows on her knees as she sat hunched and staring intently at the pregnancy test balanced on the edge of the sink.
She hadn't really noticed any symptoms until she was sent home sick from one of her shifts. As she rode the subway home, she idly flipped through her phone until her eyes caught on her period tracking app. She had only downloaded it when she and Ace decided to start trying for a baby, using it to track her ovulation. She kept using it out of habit even after they put a pin on their efforts, but as she looked at it then she realized she couldn't even remember the last time she had used it. The last time she had HAD to use it. Darla hurriedly clicked open the app then, only to realize the last recorded menstrual period had been over three months ago. Upon that realization, she hurried off the train at her stop and made her way to the closest bodega to pick up a pregnancy test.
Darla made her way home and found that despite it being late, Ace hadn't returned yet. She thought about waiting for him, surely he'd be home soon, but she decided she couldn't wait and went to the bathroom.
So...there she was. Still dressed in her scrubs and with her purse and coat dropped haphazardly by her feet along with the torn up box of the pregnancy test, just waiting for her results. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Things had finally settled into their original level of normalcy. Ace felt good about his level of productivity after the whole mess with Matvey, names were getting checked off his list and the work load was lightening. Ace could finally breathe, which for him meant unwinding where ever with Darla. She was truly the apple of his eye, never had he been smitten with a woman like this before. Darla was beautiful of course, but tough and funny; he’d wager she had more fight in her than some of the men who worked under him. Plus, watching her with Dewey all these years? How could he not fall in love with her, hence he was more than happy to expand their family if it meant doing it with her.
Of course they couldn’t steal Dewey and Dimitra’s thunder, so they hadn’t been actively trying recently. But with retirement just over the horizon, Ace just wanted to nap in the sand on the beach, with a hand resting gently on a swollen belly.
He had wrapped up all the things he needed to do for the Nikitin’s for the day, he started heading home but stopped for flowers and chocolates, because Ace was old school like that. He thought maybe he’d attempt to make dinner (he wasn’t a competent cook like Dewey), give Darla a back rub and possibly bring up trying again.
Darla remained sitting for perhaps longer than she needed to before finally getting up and approaching the test. She took a deep breath as she grabbed it up and lifted it up, only to exhale that breath with a giddy, surprised shudder.
It was positive.
Despite she and Ace not trying, it appeared that she was pregnant anyways. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Ace fumbled with the front door, hands full of his treats as he tried to turn the knob. He edged the front door open, peering down at the welcome mat he could see Darla’s work crocs and assumed she was home.
“Darla?” Ace called out, pushing the door shut with his bottom, before kicking off his own shoes.
Darla's head swiveled at the sound of Ace's voice. It was like he knew. She tucked the pregnancy test into the pocket of her scrubs and went to poke her head out of the bathroom.
"Hey, welcome home, doll." She greeted as she exited the bathroom and went to greet Ace properly. "Are these for me?" She asked, eyes lighting up at the little gifts in Ace's arms. He was always surprising her with things like this, much like Dewey for Dimitra. Like father, like son. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Well they’re not for me.” Ace laughed, a little too loud probably. Ace mostly lived a quiet life by himself, even when Dewey came along. He didn’t reveal any hard opinions on things and did what he was told, he didn’t cry and he didn’t laugh. But as the years went on and especially with the addition of Darla, Ace settled into himself and who he was. He of course was romantic and doting, he laughed too hard and too loud always; when he felt joy he felt it with his whole heart and it reflected in his face. He didn’t know his left from his right, and he never liked vegetables but never knew until Dewey started making his meals. But he was finding out he was a real person with Dewey and Darla, and he liked himself and who he was with these people.
“How was your day?” He asked her, kissing the top of her head.
"Well, I don't know. They could be for Dimitra and Dewey, they'll be coming back from their honeymoon in the next couple days." Darla laughed as she plucked the gifts from Ace's arms to admire. She tucked her nose into the flowers and sniffed, letting out a content little sigh. "Work was okay, I came home early though." She explained. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“How come?” Ace asked, a brow furrowed. Darla, much like Ace, worked long hours and rarely ever came home early. “Did you get home just now, do you want any water or tea?” He asked almost in passing as he was already stepping into the kitchen.
“I wasn’t feeling well, and it was shaping up to be a quiet night anyways, so I came home.” Darla explained as she trailed after Ace to the kitchen. She set her flowers on the counter and stretched to grab one of the glass vases kept on a tall shelf. “Could you brew us some tea? I think we still have some mint in the cabinet.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Mint tea, coming right up.” Ace announced, fumbling around the cabinets and mugs. “What’s not feeling good? Do you want some tums?” He asked then, turning on the faucet for her to fill the vase.
“Mm, just an upset stomach. I was a little woozy, but nothing to worry about too much.” Darla explained, uttering a thank you as she proceeded to fill the case. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Alright, well we’ll keep it light for dinner tonight. Do you want to take a bath? I can start it for you.” He offered, spooning some sugar into their mugs. Dewey would’ve told Ace to use honey instead, and scold him for spilling the sugar. But a part of Ace’s appeal was that he did things in his own way. He slid the mug down to Darla; a couple beads of mint tea rolling down its side.
