“Yeah, Bertie mentioned you have a couple siblings. I’m an only child myself.” Ed nodded. He seemed friendly enough, he had a polite smile in spite of his otherwise rough around the edges appearance.
“Uh so, you and Bertie…You’re just friends, right?” He asked then. |

Without meaning to, Viktor’s face erupted into a bright red flush. Of course he first and foremost thought of Bernadette as his friend, but he’d be a liar if he said he hadn’t thought about being more. He thought she was kind and thought she was awfully pretty, but he liked their friendship and dynamic and didn’t want to risk it with the concept of more.
“I-uh, I mean, yeah, we’re just friends.” Viktor nodded, rubbing at the back of his neck.

Viktor didn’t know what he expected, but it wasn’t for his heart to sink in his chest, an overwhelming sense of disappointment clenching in his belly.
“I-oh, are you...are you going to ask her out?” He asked.

I hope she doesn’t, was Viktor’s first thought and he immediately felt guilty about it. He forced a small smile and shrugged.
“I don’t know. Maybe.” He said.

| “You know, she lives on the upper east side, goes to a nice private school. I dropped out when I was fifteen, left home a year later and haven’t really found a new place since I left.” Ed explained. |

And there it was. Ed was homeless and slumming it.
“Oh...uh, actually, hold that thought. Bertie’s been a minute. I’m going to go check on her.” Viktor said as he stood up and hurried off toward the kitchen, nearby stumbling over the coffee table in true Viktor fashion.

Bertie was happily humming and mumbling to herself in the kitchen. Her apron was pretty dirty, she had some flour on her face, just above her brow. She was stirring a big pot of something, just barely tall enough to be able to see its contents as she stirred. When she heard Viktor, she smiled and looked up at him.
“Hey, sorry it’s taking so long.” She chirped nervously. |
