“Okay, okay!” Asha put her hands up in defense. “Uh so you’re using protection then...?” Asha asked next.

Viktor was fidgeting in his chair, embarrassed to be having this conversation with his mom.

“Well, yeah...sometimes. Other times, I... you know. I don’t...finish...in her.” He mumbled.

“Oh my god,” Asha never thought she’d hear the phrase finish in her come out of her youngests mouth. She was losing composure fast, the facade of being a cool mom her kids could talk to was faltering. “Ahh well it IS possible then.” Asha sputtered.

“No i understand what you’re saying, but you can still get pregnant. The, uh, pull out method isn’t full proof.” Asha explained.

Viktor’s face began to pale as his mother’s words began to sink in.

“You...you don’t think she really could be pregnant, do you? I...we...I’m...I don’t think I’ve ever...” He was sputtering nervously now, mouth a little dry. Did he get Bernadette pregnant?

“It’s a possibility.” Asha sighed, rubbing her temple. “Only one way to find out.” She added.

“H-how? A test? Peter? Mama, what...what happens if she is?” Viktor all but blubbered his words out. What WOULD happen? Would Bernadette want to keep it? Would she get rid of it?

Would she leave Viktor either way?

“Hey, hey, hey, slow down, baby.” Asha cooed, reaching across the table to collect his hands in hers. “A simple pregnancy test will do, I can go with you after lunch with one or you guys can have your own privacy and hash it out...But you shouldn’t get worked up about outcomes that aren’t real yet.” Asha explained.

Viktor was still reeling, eyes going a bit glossy even, but he allowed his hands to be gathered up all the same. He looked up to Asha with his brows knitted with worry.

"But what if she gets upset? Really upset? What if she...what if she breaks up with me? Or, worse, what if she stops being my friend?" He managed.

Asha offered a soft smile, rubbing her thumbs over his knuckles.

“I don’t think Bernadette would ever do that.” Asha tried to assure.

After lunch, which was mostly Viktor worrying and not eating much do anything despite Asha filling plate after plate with his favorites for him, the son and mother duo went to a drugstore near Bernadette’s to pick up a handful of pregnancy tests. Asha helped pick out and pay for the most dependable looking ones and then had the driver take them to Bernadette’s apartment after Viktor sent her a text. He opted to go up alone, wanting to just be with Bernadette in case it all went south, and was now standing outside the door with sweaty palms and a paper bag.

He swallowed thickly before nervously knocking at the door.

Bernadette was inside, curled up on the bathroom floor. She was white as a sheet and clammy from up chucking all afternoon. Bernadette hadn’t even considered being pregnant, she didn’t have a mom to give her the talk, and the nannies were too old school to cover that in her homeschooling. The idea was that Bertie would learn about sex on her wedding night and make babies then; whoops.

She heard the door, she wasn’t necessarily expecting Viktor but knowing she was sick, it wouldn’t be surprising for him to check on her.

“Coming!” Bernadette called weakly, taking her time coming up from the floor.

When Viktor heard Bernadette, he lowered his hand, only so he could nervously wring the paper bag in his hands while he waited.
