Viktor had never outright explained to Bernadette what the family business, but not because he wanted to omit or lie to her. Truly, it just never came up nor did he think to bring it up as it was a life he was accustomed to since birth.
“Sasha and I went out to meet one of Papa’s associates, but when we got to the meeting place, he wasn’t there, and, wel, someone else was.” Viktor explained. “It wasn’t the first time someone tried to put a hit out on us, but it is the first time someone shot me.”

“I know you’re not trying to make me quit, but I don’t like the idea of you being worried or scared for me either.” Viktor squeezed Bernadette’s hand then. “I’ll talk to him, I’ll see what I can do. Either way, I probably can’t work right now anyway.” He let go of Bernadette’s hand so he could reach up to pet at her face. “I promise I won’t go anywhere. I’ll do what I have to do to stay with you and baby B.”

“I’m sorry I got you so worked up over this.” Viktor apologized again before giving her cheek a light, playful squeeze. “But I’ll make it up to you. As long as I’m on the mend, I’ll order whatever takeout you want. I’ll help you study. I’ll rub that smelly good stuff on your stomach for you.”

“I don’t think so.” Bernadette chuckled, laughter trailing off just in time for a knock to sound at the door.
It was Asha peeking in, face streaked with mascara from crying.
“Oh Mrs. Nikitin, please come in.” Bernadette waved, not wanting to hog Viktor, especially knowing she was not the only one worried. Asha was much less careful in her rushing to his side, opposite of Bernadette. Her eyes threatened to start watering again, a hand cupped over her mouth to stifle a sob at the state of her baby boy.
“Oh bebê! Look at you!” She exclaimed, putting his face and smoothing his hair. |
