Arte had resigned herself to a life of a sort of indifference and invisibility. Her older siblings and even younger siblings, all special and passionate in some way. JJ was Roxanne’s pet, the golden boy with the perfect everything. His wit as sharp as his principles, handsome and proud. Remedy was athletic and rebellious, but more than that she was fearless. She scaled the tall wired fence that surrounded their middle school and dove off, just to prove she could and do it without flinching or hesitating. She was Jer’s pet, his unofficial favorite but they all knew she was. Damian was actually leeched to Xander as often as he could be, but when he couldn’t be, he needed no one. Equally loud as Remedy and proud as JJ, he could sing and dance. He was social and a charmer, incredibly beautiful and strangers on the street would stop him or their parents to make sure they knew it.

Poor Arte, not that she though of herself as ‘poor’ or ‘awed’ down to. But everyone sort of did it for her, it was hard to not get the impression that she was as a whole, sort of unremarkable. But it didn’t make her sad, it was just one of those things. But her best friend Lucinda made her feel special, they met once as little girls for a play date and it was set in stone from there. Lucinda spent most weekends and holidays, breaks from school even, with Arte and the Laughlin’s. Lucinda maybe spent more time with Arte than some of her siblings on a given day. Lots of late nights, sitting in the window of Arte’s room, talking about boys and music and shows while looking out for the taxi bring Jer home from any trip. They’d sneak down to the kitchen in the middle of the night and Lucinda would make them koolaid and toast pop tarts she’d snuck over and they’d giggle all night long about nothing. That changed of course when Lucinda started dating JJ.

Arte couldn’t say she explicitly minded, they were good for each other. Lucinda seemed to humble and relax JJ a lot, and JJ both challenged and softened Lucinda in the ways she needed. But Lucinda was giggling late into the night in JJ’s room now, and they spent all their time together. Arte wasn’t sad, but she was lonely.

Though instead she decided to throw herself into here studies. She found herself aligning with the healer track, with how things had been going, Arte acknowledged a need for more specialized doctors for supernaturals. So she was perched at the counter in her Mother’s flowers shop, taking her notes and preparing for pre med. The flower shop, named Trouvaille which loosely translated to, ‘a chance encounter with something wonderful,’ a name chosen in reference to when Xander came into their life. It was large a beautiful, to say Roxanne had a green thumb was an understatement. Though Arte attributed it to Roxanne’s ability to mother, which didn’t stop with children and extended to plants. She’d sing and talk to them, play music and pet the varying leaves with care. There were creeping vines and dangling ivies in any direction you faced. It was quite popular for a flower shop, hence Roxanne needed help. So the children would rotate out and help out at the shop, which as time went on and they all were starting families and moving away, turned into just Arte manning the shop when their Mother was away.

Havania often said if she had to pick one trait all her children collectively shared it would be confidence, but what she failed to say in addition was that it was that they all had just a skosh too much.

It was this "confidence" that led Sal to decline his father's offer to take him into the city to meet with his former associate and mother to Lucinda's best friend, Roxanne Laughlin. It was also this confidence that led him to take the wrong subway route, to give two different taxi drivers the wrong address, and even to convince himself NOT to ask for directions even as he ended up right back where he started. But it was thanks to this confidence that Sal eventually made it to Trouvaille without so much as worrying a single hair on his head.

Sal had recently decided that he wanted to move to the city to experience a change in scenery. It wasn't that he was tired of Aurora or his family home, it was simply that he was beginning to feel a little restless out in the boonies, especially as he saw his siblings and friends all "growing up" and moving out of Aurora. Before that restlessness could turn to resentment, Sal decided to take what savings he had and use it to move to the city for a new experience. Though he'd saved all through high school, Havania warned him of the expenses, so he'd worked with his parents to find him some sort of work to sustain himself. Navrik made a call to a family friend and was fortunate enough to set up a meeting with Sal and her to see about a job at her flower shop.

Sal was once again confident about this prospect, given he had his father's green thumb and a knack for caring for all things green, so, wanting this job as much as he did, he dressed up in the nicest button up and slacks he owned and set out to the city and to Trouvaille. A few hours and several mishaps later, he finally made it and strode into the shop.

Arte was sitting at the counter, flipping through her advanced anatomy book when she heard the bell jingle above the door, indicating someone had come in. She looked up from her book briefly in acknowledgement.

“Hi, welcome. Shopping for a special occasion?” She asked, something she didn’t have to even think about saying anymore, she was so used to reciting it.

Sal looked over to a counter where a girl was perched. He noted first that she was awfully pretty, he noted right afterwards she looked awfully familiar. He squinted as he tried to place the face to a name.

“Ah, no, I’m actually here about a meeting with Missus Laughlin? My dad, Navrik, called her about maybe hiring me?” He said, a question intoning his words, though it was mostly due to him racking his brain.

Arte wouldn’t consider herself especially pretty, her features a lot fairer than her mothers. Her skin pale and white, like a porcelain doll. Her eyes were a light and clear blue, almost pastel in hue and softness. Her hair fell just at her collarbone, platinum blonde with little frayed white baby hairs licking at her hairline.

Arte didn’t recognize the man as a familiar face, but she knew the name ‘Navrik.’

“Your dad’s Navrik? Which one of the boys are you?” Arte asked.

She didn’t spend too much time out in Aurora, Lucinda always liked coming into the city. But she knew Lucinda had a slew of siblings, a majority of which were sons.

“The oldest. I’m Salomao, but everyone just calls me Sal.” Sal introduced. He looked at the girl a bit closer before it clicked. “Ah! You’re Lucinda’s friend, right? Artemis? Is that right?”

“Yeah, but everyone just calls me Arte.” She nodded, “Did you move then? If you’re wanting to work here?” She asked.

“I’m in the process of. I’m staying with a friend who moved earlier this year until I can get on my feet.” Sal explained before trying to see what Arte was reading. “Medical textbooks? Are you going to school to be a doctor? A nurse?” Sal asked. He could hardly remember Arte and he certainly couldn’t remember if she was the brainy sort.

“A doctor, hopefully.” Artie answered before closing said textbook with a slight flush on her cheeks. Being the plainest and the least extraordinary of her siblings, being under a lense was somewhat uncomfortable in the context that it was foreign. “Let me go get my mom, I’ll be right back.” Arte said, sliding off the stool and disappearing into the back.

“Sure, I’ll be here.” Sal bobbed his head. Almost as soon as Arte had left the room, he turned to get a better look at the shop. He began poking around in his immediate space, touching delicate leaves and smelling soft flowers. It reminded him of the little greenhouse his dad had built him for his tenth birthday. It was always full of their plant projects.

His attention was quickly drawn to the door as the bell tinkled again and in cane an older blond man with bright blue eyes, almost like twinkling sapphires. The man noticed him almost as soon as he himself was noticed, but there was recognition in this man’s eyes where there wasn’t any in Sal’s.

“Ah, are you Navrik’s boy? One of them?” He asked, an accent thickly lathering his words.

“I am. I’m Salomao.” Sal greeted.

The man must have realized Sal didn’t recognize him the same way because he reached out a hand then.

“I am Jeraud. My wife told me your father called her about wanting work for one of his sons. Has she not come out to greet you yet?” He asked.

“Oh, Mister Laughlin, nice to meet you. Not yet, Arte went to get her.” Sal smiled politely and took his hand to shake.

Almost on cue, Roxanne appeared from the back, pulling back the thin lace curtain the divided the front of house from the back. Roxanne was just as beautiful and radiant as she had always been, her complexion more warm and peachy than her daughter, but the same platinum blonde hair, though hers was long and thick with dense curls.

“Oh I’m so sorry to keep you waiting!” Roxanne exclaimed, her own accent quite thick. As though all the decades spent in america had no bearing on her what so ever. She wiped her hands on the apron she was wearing before slipping past the counter and reaching for Sal’s hand. “Mon Dieu! Your so big, I don’t think I’ve seen you since you were a baby!” Roxanne fawned, pinching at his cheeks in a maternal way.

Arte returned to the front and resumed her place at the counter without much of a word, assuming her parents would exchange pleasantries with Sal and do his interview, leaving her in charge of the front as usual.

“Thanks, It’s because I ate all my veggies.” Sal joked, using a bit of Navrik brand humor as if It would appeal more to Roxanne.

“Hello, mom amor. I was hoping to have lunch with you, but I forgot about your meeting with little Salomao.” Jer said as he stretched over to tenderly kiss his wife’s temple. “I will wait with Arte and you can do your interview. Then let me take you to get something to eat, hm?”

“That sounds wonderful, I’ll be right back.” Roxanne chirped before giving Sal’s cheek a brief pat. “Follow me back and we’ll get you sorted.” She added, gesturing for him to follow her behind the counter and past the curtain.

The back room wasn’t so big, it was mostly a ‘family run’ business so it wasn’t expected to ever have more then a couple people in the back. There was a fridge with cut flowers and corsages, some boutineers for a wedding. There was a couple desks for flower arrangement, a couple projects already started. The sink had a little counter with some varying tools on it and there was a little oval table and a few chairs to sit. From seemingly nowhere, Roxanne procured a little dish with little almond cookies on it and sat it in the middle of the table. “I wish I could offer you more, I try not to really keep food back here.” She explained.

“Oh, no, this is plenty. Thank you.” Sal grinned, which as he did so made him look more like his mother despite having his dad’s everything. He took a seat and reached for a cookie. “Missus Laughlin, I really appreciate you giving me the time to meet with you.”

Meanwhile, upfront, Jer idled about the front room for a moment, admiring his wife’s work, before going over to the counter where his daughter was perched. He leaned on it and looked at her books with a little smile.

“Always reading, ma petit bichette, even at work.” He teased lightly. “While me and Mama are out, you should break for lunch and take little Salomao out. I bet Mama wouldn’t mind if we closed the shop for a spell.”

“Oh it’s my pleasure, you know the kids only ever have been hands around here and they’ve come less and less. It’s mostly just Arte now, and even your sister has helped out before! She’s a good girl, which helps your case.” Roxanne teases before sitting down. “Though I know all of Navrik’s kids are sweet. He said you’re quite good on the farm? You grow a lot of your own plants?” Roxanne asked.

Arte smoked a little at the affectionate nickname but didn’t look away from her book.

“She probably wouldn’t, but I don’t mind being here either. Besides, I think he’s rather get lunch with someone he’s actually friends with.” Arte had a vague idea of who Sal was, though her faint memory of him was of him as a young prepubescent boy. That was about where it stopped too, her and Lucinda didn’t make habit of hanging out with her brothers with the exception of Godric, and only sometimes.
