Our dad has always been really keen on sustainability so we grow most of our own produce for the house and we even started growing flowers when we got the greenhouse set up so my mom could have fresh flowers.” Sal explained eagerly. “I would definitely be good help here in taking care of the plants and would love to learn more about arranging.”

“Arte, be hospitable. He’s your friend’s brother, no? Be kind, take him to lunch. He’s traveled an awfully long way to be here.” Jer chided.

“I can definitely help you with that, it’s a lot of fun, especially if you’re a creative spirit.” Roxanne nodded. “We don’t really house many produce here, just some saplings that flower as well as bear fruit. Some herbs too but we’re mostly decorative plants, I hope that won’t be a problem. But if my children can do it I’m sure you’ll only excel.” She chirped eagerly.

“I’d say the job is yours if you want it, when would you like to start?” Roxanne asked.

“You know he is, but it still feels weird and forced.” Arte admitted, slouching and dropping her cheek in a palm with exasperation. “But, I’ll ask if he wants to tag along to get lunch with me, but if he says no then that’s it. I’m not gonna insist on him having lunch with me.” Arte compromised.

“Are you serious?” Sal lit up. “Oh, immediately, please! I just have to finish moving some of my stuff to the city, but that won’t take more than a day or two.” He beamed.

“Fine, but when he says yes, make sure you are courteous to him.” Jer said as he reached for his wallet. He pulled out a couple of twenties and put them on the counter. “It will be my treat, get something tasty.”

“Is tomorrow too soon? We open at nine, I’ll be here and Arte too. Maybe she can train you on the register and then when it’s slow we can do some flower arranging?” Roxanne offered.

Artie accepted the money and stuffed it into the pocket of her flannel. “If he says no, can I keep the money?” Arte asked with a slight smile in jest.

“No, that sounds great. I can be here as early as you need me.” Sal grinned, still nodding eagerly.

“Fine, but I bet he’ll say yes. You’re beautiful just like your mama, Artemis. No boy could say no.” Jer grinned, his nose scrunching.

Sal got up and grabbed Roxanne’s hand for a firm shake.

“I think I will be too. Thank you so much.” He chuckled.

Roxanne shook his hand and they exchanged a few more pleasantries as they returned to the front. Upon her return, Roxanne smiled at Jer and joined him at his side, sliding her arm around his.

“Thank you for waiting, are you ready, mon amour?” She chirped happily.

“Mama, before you go, Dad told me I should get lunch too. Is that alright? If I close up for like a half hour?” Arte asked.

“Of course! You should take Sal with you!” Roxanne suggested eagerly, in the same mind set as her husband.

Arte looked to Sal, not jumping up from her seat yet.

“You don’t have to.” She said, offering him an out.

Ever since a particular incident in which Sal (AND Neran) found himself involved with one of his older sister’s friends, he tried to make it a policy NOT to go out or have “anything” to do with his siblings friends, but seeing as how he was just hired and his new boss was seemingly eager about them going to get lunch together, how could he say no? It also helped that Arte was awfully pretty.

“Sure. I’ll go. I don’t know many good places in the city, so it’ll be nice to know one.” Sal grinned.

Arte was a little surprised Sal agreed, a little miffed too because her Dad was right in that he didn’t say no.

“Wonderful! Arte I’ll see you after lunch, take good care of Sal, okay?” Roxanne instructed before letting her and her husband out.

Arte found it bizarre and strange that her mother would ask her to take care of anyone as big as Sal. The women in their family were historically tall, Roxanne and Aunt Riley, it’s been said both of their parents were tall too. Even at on the ‘shorter’ end of the Laughlin women, at five eight and a half, Arte was petite beside Sal.

“Uh I’m not sure what you like, I don’t know if you like boba and ramen like your sister. But I was just going to hit the deli around the corner.” Arte explained as she busied herself with packing up her books. She couldn’t help feeling a bit on the spot, this may have been her first time since highschool alone with a boy who she wasn’t related to.

“That’s fine, I’m not picky. There’s no room for that at home with all us kids.” Sal said, still grinning. “Do you want help putting your things away?” He asked, already in motion to do so.

“Thanks.” Arte uttered, allowing Sal to help shovel in the large books into her backpack before pulling it off the counter to sling over her shoulder. “Well there’s lots of places to eat here, so don’t feel like you have to settle.” Arte said as she strode out the front, holding the door open for Sal as she did so.

“Well, what’s your favorite? Let’s do that.” Sal bobbed his head as he followed Arte out, pausing to allow her to lock the door to the shop.

“I like the deli, they know me there. The owners nice to me.” Arte shrugged as she turned the open side and locked the door.

A lot of the things Arte liked had less to do with the sensations and more to do with the feelings attached to it. The sandwiches at the deli, they were just sandwiches. At least to Arte and in terms of quality. But it was family own and had been around since she was a kid, the owner never forgot her name or mixed her up with her siblings. When she was very small he never made her pay, even now as an adult he made sure her drink was free.

“That’s a good enough endorsement for me.” Sal said, still all grins. “Do you have a go to sandwich? Is there a secret menu? What do you suggest?”
