Marina's eyes widened and brimmed with tears at the mention of the pet name she'd given her daughter as a babe.

Her little pearl.

"I-Is she really okay? My Polina?" She asked.

Alexei nodded definitively. “I saved her, and she’s sent me for you.” He said, pleading as he scooted closer still. “I can bring you to her.” He added again, though not bothered by needing to issue persistent reassurance.

Marina dropped the knife then, shakily nodding as she did so. A sob bubbled up as she reached for the man's hands, collecting them both despite her own looking dwarfed by his. She raised them to her lips and she kissed at his knuckles, tears trickling down her red streaked cheeks as she raised his hands to touch to her forehead.

"Спасибо и благослови вас." She wept.

Alexei’s expression softened further, he felt his knuckles, cold from the morning air; icy upon her flushed skin. For all his intensity, his brutality and his violence, Alexei was not unfeeling. He placed his palms then, on her cheeks and leaned down to press his forehead against hers; the way Polina did to him.

“ теперь ты под моей защитой.” He said quietly, before releasing her face. He stood up then, but offered out both hands to Marina, to help her to her feet.

Marina continued to simper and lightly sob as she took the man's hands and rose to her feet. She looked over her shoulder at her husband's slumped corpse for a long moment. There was once a time she had loved him, a time when he had loved her, but now as she looked at his still body...she no longer felt anything like it.

"I need to grab my Alina, then you can take me to my little pearl." She said, turning back to the other man.

“Take your time.” Alexei said, not really worried about the state of papa, or that anyone could find him like this. Alexei was the mess maker, not really the guy they send in for cleanup. So besides a lack of knowledge on this particular routine, he couldn’t care less about the man in general.

Marina let go of Alexei's hands and shuffled passed him, muscles still stiff from laying on the floor at her husband's feet for too long. She went to the other bedroom and grabbed the little wooden box that held Alina's ashes, perched at a little makeshift altar on a dresser in the room. She also grabbed a photo of all three of her girls that was nearby. She carried them with her as she entered the living room to meet the man.

"I am ready, мой мальчик." She said.

“Almost,” Alexei began, before shrugging off his jacket once again, and draping it over Marina’s shoulders. While her hands appeared occupied, he still offered an arm out to her for support. “It’s cold. Now we’re ready.” He finished.

Marina offered a small, motherly smile, not looking at all like she was capable of the murder she had committed.

"You are a good boy...please be good to my Polina too." She said.

Alexei had escorted Marina from the scene, just as promised. While he didn’t care for what happened to papa next, he did have the good mind to shut the door behind him at least. He kept Marina close to his side, and he even made sure to open her car door and buckle her in. He was thankful he still had his aunts car, he was sure she realized it was missing by now but he hadn’t checked his phone to confirm. She’d get it back later.

He returned to his family home with Marina in tow. He took care to make sure she didn’t trip on a step or bump her elbow in the entryway. The house was still quiet, he wasn’t positive still if his parents were home. If they were he supposed they might still be sleeping, if his dad was working out, Alexei was sure he’d hear him in the home gym. Alexei guided Marina down the hall, just like he did before with Polina. Though it was his room, he still didn’t want to startle Polina by a sudden entrance. He knocked lightly on the door before opening it, expecting Polina would hear it.

“We have returned.” He announced quietly from the doorway.

Polina, despite her best efforts, had curled up on Alexei's bed and dozed off not long before his return. She startled awake when she heard the knock and was in the midst of sitting up when she looked up to see Alexei and her mama in the doorway. She was on her feet in an instant and rushed over to throw herself into her mother's arms, instantly wailing like a small child.

"M-Mama! Mama, Я был так напуган!" She cried.

Marina was not much better off as she instantly began weeping with relief, throwing her arms around her youngest daughter and clinging onto her, never wanting to let go. She kissed the side of Polina's face, uttering incoherent prayers and words of affection to her daughter.

"Я так рад, что с тобой все в порядке." Marina sniffed.

Alexei did not interject or interrupt. He was well aware that this was a momentous reunion; these two probably did not expect to see each other ever again. There were a lot of feelings to unpack and he was sure they just wanted to be together in this moment. He did shut his door behind them though, in attempts to damper some of the sound of Russian crying, from his bedroom. If his parents were home, he hoped they wouldn’t hear enough to merit an investigation.

Polina and Marina embraced and cried for several long minutes. Polina let her mama smooth over her hair and kiss at her cheeks, but as the wailing settled into a more peaceful sort of relief, Polina looked over her mama's shoulder to Alexei. She pat at her mother's shoulders to be released before stepping passed her and approaching Alexei. She reached out for his hands and kissed at his knuckles before touching her forehead to them.

"Thank you...thank you for rescuing me and for bringing my mama to me." She said.

This was almost as delectable as when she’d pressed their foreheads together, but this time he could feel her lips; blush and plump against his jagged knuckles. Once again, his cheeks went rosy, his ears burning as he did his best to avert his normally intense gaze. He faced away from the wall with the mirror to ensue he didn’t reveal himself by mistake in the reflection.

“I told you, you’re safe now.” Alexei said sheepishly. “Consider yourselves under my protection now, officially. Until you may not want it.” He added, sneaking a sidelong glance at Polina.
