It had been about two and a half months since Ava found out she was pregnant. She hadn’t told anyone else besides Han, though she didn’t care if his roommates knew. She was hoarding all the baby stuff she acquired in his apartment, in his bedroom. It was her intention, to keep saving and spending her money wisely, Han’s too. She would stock up on as many baby things as she could before telling her parents, she wanted to present the notion that she was responsible, that she could do this.
Ava was never what one might picture when talking about motherhood. But she’d really leaned into it. By her first appointment with Peter, she already accumulated a list of questions she wanted to ask and information she wanted. While she of course left the appointment with lots of pamphlets and recommended reading, she already had books she was reading. Normally, she’d be up late at night scrolling on twitter or TikTok, but now she was scrolling through mommy blogs and parenting forums. Ava would challenge by now, with the exception of first hand experience, she may know more than her parents. Her father surely did not know what cord banking was.
That’s what she was doing right now, laying in Han’s room, waiting for him to get home from work. She’d been going out of her way to stay in the city more, saying she was staying with Manon or Lucita, though by now she wondered if it was an unspoken thing that she was just at Han’s. She was laying on his bed, a bag of hot cheeto’s beside her as she snacked, scrolling through an article titled what I wish I had known about Epidurals. She was showing a bit, but not much. It was easy to conceal her tummy under sweatshirts or oversized t shirts, which was maybe the most out of character thing for Ava, wearing a whole shirt.
There were various shopping bags around the room, holding pacifiers and diapers, colic formula and nipple cream. Most of the bags had been set to one side of the room at least, so they weren’t overtaking Han’s room though Ava suspected he didn’t mind.
If it was one thing that could be said about Han it was that he was a man of his word, so when he said he would work hard enough for both he and Ava, he meant it and was doing so by putting in plenty of hours at the restaurant as well as picking up another part time gig. The samchon had gotten him a job at a packing warehouse where he worked a few nights a week, mostly just on the nights Ava was at home versus his place. He was often exhausted after working all day and into the early hours of the morning, but it was worth it so long as it meant Ava was able to take care of herself and that they'd be able to afford everything they needed before the baby arrived. Or, rather, buy everything they needed before they could tell Ava's parents that said baby would be arriving at all.
He didn't quite agree with or understand Ava's plan to keep her parents out of the loop, especially considering how far along she was getting. Honestly, it amazed him that she was able to conceal their little surprise so far. But they were her parents and Han supposed she knew them best. If this was what she thought the best tactic was, he'd follow her lead.
He'd gotten off at the restaurant earlier than usual and had made out lucky with a hefty portion of side dishes and even some leftovers from a catering gig the restaurant hosted that night. While he hauled everything up the stairs of the building, Yoo In was surely keeping Manon company at her skating practice (as was his ritual typically) and Il Soon was probably out causing some sort of mischief with Priya somewhere. He supposed maybe Olezka and Van might be home, but he was certain that Ava was at least there waiting for him. Tonight was one of "their nights". He was eager to sit down and eat with her and then get into bed so he could kick his feet up and talk to his baby and his baby's baby.
As he came up to the apartment floor, he finagled his keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door.
"I'm home." He called out, mostly to see who was home.
"On the phone!" Van called from his room, which was half surprising.
There was no response from Olezka so either he wasn't home or he'd retired early, which was typical. The Russian worked at a bookstore and cafe most days and was up earlier than most of the house usually. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“In your room!” Ava called without looking up from her phone. She knew he was expecting her, but she still would rather announce herself when called out too. After a moment, she climbed up from the bed and strode out into the hall, still looking down at her phone. “Did you know an epidural can cause respiratory issues in the baby?” She asked, finally looking up then and picking up her pace to meet Han half way and help with the bags of food.
"I...did not." Han chuckled as he held up a bag in each hand. "Have you eaten yet? Something besides those awful takis? I have black bean noodles or ginseng chicken soup." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“No, nothing besides my delicious spicy treats.” Ava grinned, taking a bag from him before grabbing his face and giving him a quick kiss. “You love my spicy kisses, don’t act like you don’t.” She teased.
"I do, but how does our baby like them?" Han chuckled, reaching out to give Ava's stomach a pet through the sweater. "Sit down, I'll get utensils. Do you want anything to drink?" Han asked as he made his way over to the kitchen.
Han was always doting on Ava even before they found out she was carrying precious cargo, but he was undeniably softer now. He was always calling her on his breaks to make sure she had eaten or was getting enough exercise throughout the day. Though Ava hadn't had any horrible bouts of morning sickness, Han still made sure to put together a "clean-up" kit a travel dental set, some face wipes, and even extra hairties for the times he wasn't around to hold her hair. At night, even if he'd worked a long shift, he often would prop Ava's feet up and let her tell him all about her day while he rubbed them for her.
If his actions showed anything, it was that he was shaping up to be a good partner and parent. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“She likes them just fine.” Ava scoffed before moving to put the bag on the table. “Just water is fine.” She said then. Even though they didn’t know the gender yet, Ava had a pretty good feeling it was a girl.
"You say that, but I'm sure as soon as she comes out with a little chapped butt from all her hot cheeto poops, she'll tell you otherwise." Han teased, grabbing the utensils and some water for he and Ava both. He got the things situated on the table cluttered dining room table and began unpacking the bags. "Besides reading up on epidurals, what did you do today? Anything fun?" He asked as he got settled in a chair _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Hm before I came over here I dropped off some stuff at the post office. I was able to sell a bunch of stuff on depop, so more baby funds since you won’t let me work.” Ava began. “After that I just posted up here, I’ve just been reading mostly.” She explained as she started getting into some of the containers of food.
"You don't need to sell all your stuff. Remember, you'll need stuff for after you have the baby too." Han said before letting out a little sighed hum. "It was and it wasn't. The restaurant was closed for a catering job. Someone was getting married or something. We had to make a lot of bulk foods and and there was a lot of clean-up. It was fine otherwise. We all made out like thieves with all the leftovers." He grinned as he tore away a chicken leg from the whole chicken jammed into a tupper that had surely been left behind by either of the boys or maybe even the ahjumma or samchon at one point. He grabbed one of the thin paper plates stacked into a bag and put the chicken onto it before stretching across the table to put it in front of Ava. "Make sure you eat extra." He settled back into his seat and began serving himself up. "Did you get to spend any time with your family before coming over?" _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Well I need to make room too, it was all stuff I don’t use or wear anymore anyways.” Ava said, dressing her plate. “I had breakfast with everyone. Well, everyone but Romano. He definitely slept over and overslept at Jai’s.” Ava answered.
"Oh, I bet Jai's mom would love that." Han laughed before his laughter trailed off as he began to eat. "I haven't seen your family in awhile. Maybe I should go over soon...maybe we should talk to your folks about the situation." He said, glancing up to gauge Ava's reaction.
He didn't bring the subject up very often and he certainly never pressed too hard, after all, he trusted Ava's judgement on it. But he definitely wanted to talk with Ava's parents sooner or later about the situation, preferably before the baby was crowning. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
