"I'm so sad, Jer. I want a baby, I want a family...But I'm scared, I can't lose anymore babies." Roxanne began sobbing. She buried her face in her hands and continued to weep. "What if I can't give you any babies?"
"Then we don't need any. I'm fine with just you, Roxanne. I love you and you're all I need. If we can't have children, then I just want you." Jer said surely as he reached out to place a hand at Roxanne's wrist, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I love you and all I care about is you." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Somewhere inside Jer's words brought Roxanne some ounce of comfort, and she believed him of course. But in the moment it wasn't a solution to her feelings, overall it would just take time. While she continued to sob, she reached out for him, urging him to lay with her so she could just be held.
Jer caught the hint and went to lay down beside Roxanne, promptly gathering her up in his arms and holding her close to him. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
It had been years since Jer and Roxanne lost their first child and after several additional failed pregnancies and otherwise simply failing to GET pregnant, the couple was beginning to lose hope they'd ever start the family they had wanted so desperately.
Jer, of course, meant what he had told Roxanne when their troubles all began he had always wanted her and if he could only just have her that would be enough. However, it still pained him to have lost the children they lost and to see his wife so devastated by their tiresome efforts. His heart broke a little more every time, especially knowing that it meant he'd find his beloved Roxanna cooped up in their townhouse mourning over what simply felt like would never be theirs. It had begun weighing on him and he and Roxanne had finally sat down and had the conversation.
The conversation that maybe they should just stop trying, at least for awhile.
It was a hard conversation to have, of course, but Jer expressed the pain it brought him with every loss as well as how it hurt him to see Roxanne agonized as well. Many tears were shed and of course through their conversation, but ultimately they decided that at least a break from trying would be best and, more than a break, perhaps other options were viable.
They knew plenty of other women in their inner circle who were having no problem conceiving, in fact, even Roxanne's sister was well into her pregnancy with her first child. If they were so desperate to have a child of their own, perhaps they could try surrogacy. Even if that didn't pan out, they could of course always look into adoption.
Or they could pick up the first baby one of them stumbled upon, which was more or less looking like the path they were destined for when a rather kerfuffled (or ass beaten) Jeraud came back to Society headquarters with a newborn baby boy in tow with no parents to speak of, or rather they were very dead (thanks, Mando).
There was a bit of buzz as to what was to be done to the infant. It wasn't as if they could hand him over to the regular authorities, as it seemed that there were supernatural forces who very much wanted him for reasons only said forces could know. Then there was the suggestion they find any living relatives and have them come collect the baby boy. However, this was a fruitless effort as there appeared to be no living relative on documentation. Surprisingly enough, when the idea of foster home or adoption within their supernatural community came up, it was Rundin who suggested that Jer and Roxanne take him. Jer, of course, never expected Rundin to allow this, after all, he was still under strict travel regulations and still had to have a "handler" whenever he went on missions outside of New York. When Jer was able to step aside and ask him "why" he'd suggseted him, Rundin simply gave a shrug.
"You haven't put him down since you arrived with him and I know Roxanne has amazing maternal instinct," he'd explained.
So, there Jer was, in the back seat of a cab with a (still very nameless) baby and a thrown together "diaper bag" Joshua had rushed to the store to collect while Jer and Rundin drafted up paperwork for the sake of legality.
The baby was very well behaved, at least in the way that he seemed very quiet and easygoing. He'd only fussed once on their flight from California and that was simply chalked up to being immensely hungry after probably not having eaten since his mother was apparently killed, then he fussed again at the Society when he needed to be changed, a task that took the whole team as no one had babies of their own quite yet. Even after both of those incidents, her was quickly quelled when he found himself settled back into Jer's arms.
Once they reached the building where Jer and Roxanne lived, Jeraud paid the cabby and got out of the car with everything before heading up the elevator to their top floor townhouse. The doorman gave a wide-eyed look at Jer, but Jer simply shrugged and sort of held up the baby as if to say "it happens" before heading into the elevator and up to the townhouse. He juggled the bag a bit as he tried to produce his keys while making his way down the short corridor that lead from the upstairs elevator bank to their front door, which made the baby fuss a bit. Jer crooned at the baby as he managed to fish out his keys and unlock the front door.
"Roxanne, I'm home." He called quietly, mostly not to disturb the baby again. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
The last few months had been hard on Roxanne, losing babies and then losing hope she ever would have one. Her days felt sad and lonely, waiting for Jer to come home while watching her sisters belly get bigger everyday. Roxanne did her best to suck it up, to not cry all day into the night. She put on the best smile she could, knowing that the pain of not trying would never compare to the pain of losing. She was lucky to have a choice in which pain she wanted. So she tried to fill her days and stay busy, when Jer worked out of town she took on more shifts at the bakery; the Society was in no short of breads and muffins. She practiced new recipes on nights it was just herself, eating only french cuisine would get boring eventually though Jer has yet to complain.
Roxanne had been awaiting Jer's return from California, knowing he'd be home today she filled the house with fresh flowers and opened their curtains to let in natural light. She had cleaned the whole house, the smell of the slow cooker masked the scent of lemon and pine.
"I'll be out in a second," Roxanne called out, shuffling out from there room. "Do you need help with your bags...?" Her voice trailing as she came out and saw Jer standing in their doorway with, a baby?
Her eyes were wide and already glossing over with tears. She felt truly crazy, was she dreaming, seeing things? Or was it an answer from God?
"Jeraud...What are you...How?" She asked tearful as she approached slowly. She wasn't looking at him anymore, she was gazing in pure awe at the baby. Her fingertips trembled at her sides, wanting nothing more than to touch this little baby.
Jer couldn't help but give a smile at Roxanne's reaction as she approached him and the baby. He set down his bags and tilted his arms to show Roxanne the little babe in his arms. He was indeed very little and looked as wrinkly and fresh as any other newborn, but he had a thick tuft of blond hair and a notably "button"esque nose. If no one knew better, he could easily be passed off as one of Jeraud and Roxanne's own.
"I found him on our mission. He hasn't got family and needed someone to take care of him." Jer explained. "Rundin suggested we do it...mon amour, would you like to hold him?" He asked, noting her trembling fingers. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Roxanne didn't ask any more questions, she bit her quivering lip to fight back joyful sobs as she nodded. She reached out for the babe and gently took him into her arms, rocking him slowly almost immediately, cooing down at the babe.
Jer felt a bittersweet ache in his chest as well as relief. It had taken him and Roxanne so long to get to this moment, to start their family, and now it was beginning. He placed his arm around Roxanne's shoulders, huddling in close as he reached down to pet the baby's cheek with a crooked finger.
"He's wonderful, isn't he?" He agreed with her. "Rundin wanted to give us a few days to settle with him, make sure we all adjust, then we have some more paperwork to fill out, but it's all mostly formality. He's ours, Roxanna." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"He doesn't have one yet. I thought we could pick one for him together, that's how it's usually done." Jer smiled, reaching up then to wipe the remaining wetness on Roxanne's cheeks. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"I'm sure we'll sleep, he's a very good baby. He hardly cries at all, he mostly likes to be held." Jer recounted. "I did like the name Alexander, but that almost seems...too stuffy for him." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
