"We'll hold you to that." Phlox said to Jack, going to hand off Lazlo when he fussed and began reaching for Jack with irritated grunting. "I don't think I've been to the lake since...well, probably when we first got together." Phlox said with a nod as she thought about it. "So it'll be extra special." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Jack accepted Lazlo, propping the babe on his lap so he could still see out of the window.
"I've been a few times for routine Kappa extermination, but this is my first personal visit." Jack explained as the train slowed to a stop. The train didn't get off right at the lake of course, there would be a little walking but it wasn't far at all being the Roxbury was already so small. Everything was within walking distance.
"This is us." Jack replied, standing up, Lazlo still in his arms before collecting Lilith's hand as well. "Do you need help with your dress, or are you okay?" He asked then, offering to carry it too although he was likely to damage it without a doubt.
Phlox had never met anyone quite like Jack Maniac.
Phlox had been brought up in the hunter community in California - she had grown up to be a fine hunter herself - so she had thought she knew what to expect dating someone in the same line of work, but if Jack was anything, he was surprising.
Most of the men and boys she knew growing up told her that women in the hunting community were second rate and intended for lesser tasks and healers. Even her own father had told her very early on she was better off pursuing ANYTHING else because, though he did not say it outright, she was perceived as less capable than her peers because she was not only a woman, but she was also blind.
However, upon meeting Jack, he immediately let it be known that was not how he saw her. In fact, he was very much floored with the way she hunted. He didn’t see her as less, as someone incapable. He saw her as an equal.
He also saw her as someone worth admiring.
It didn’t take long after their meeting for Jack to invite her out on a date, it took even less time than that for him to invite her to his bed. Phlox wasn’t someone who was easily wooed, but there was something about Jack that made her that way.
They had been seeing each other for only a handful of weeks before he had told her he had loved her. They were in the throes of intimacy when he’d kissed her and uttered those words to her and it wasn’t until afterwards as they laid in bed together that they had talked about it. She expressed that she wasn’t quite sure yet if she was ‘in love’, but she certainly felt a certain way about him. He assured her that regardless of her needing to sort out her feelings still, he loved her with certainty and would wait.
If only the current situation could have waited.
Phlox was perched on the floor of her bathroom, a rolled-up towel under her head as she had needed to stay close to the toilet for the last few hours due to the waves of nausea. Her long dark hair had been wadded up into a half-assed bun, though shorter bits had escaped and were clinging to her cheeks and forehead with sweat and spit. This was not an entirely uncommon ailment for her these days, though she wasn’t entirely sure what it could be. At first she had shrugged it off as a common flu, but it had been a few weeks now and it hadn’t passed. She was beginning to think she needed to see a doctor and perhaps she could make that call later, but first she needed to call Jack and cancel their lunch plans.
She managed to push herself off the ground and grabbed the wall to guide herself back to her bed in the main room of her little studio apartment. She sat on the bed and felt for her phone on her nightstand before laying down on the bed and pressing the speed dial she reserved for Jack. She rubbed at her face as she listened to the phone ring. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Jack was a person who did most things with his full force. Under his mothers explosive tutelage, he was putting vampires heads on spikes, and wrestling basilisks into submission before he turned twelve. He was the same way with people, in the manner that he took them on hard and fast. He challenged people with his overwhelming charisma, and wrapped them up tight in his adoration. One the many differences between Jack and Black, Jack falling in the laps of people and situations, but Black was more reserved and navigated things from a distance if he could.
So when Jack met Phlox, he wanted to give her all his love. He’d been trying to at any given moment. He made as much time for Phlox as he could, whenever she wanted to meet and whatever she wanted them to do, Jack was happy to arrange it. Though Phlox was easy enough to please, today they had a casual lunch planned and would follow the rest of the day as it happened. Black agreed to watch Lilith, so Jack could dedicate the day to Phlox, although he was finishing a job before their rendezvous.
He had just finished hog tying a goblin, who was writhing and whipping around on the ground. There was another goblin behind him in the background wasn’t as lucky as his friend. The other goblin wasn’t moving, the back of his head had been blown away by Jacks revolver, blood cascaded against the wall behind them. Jack felt his phone begin to vibrate before London Bridge by Fergie began playing from the pocket of his jacket. He tightened the bindings on the goblin before fishing out his phone, and flipping it open.
“What’s going on, can’t wait to see me or something?” He asked with a cheesy grin, Phlox wouldn’t see it, but she was sure to hear it in his voice.
“Hah, don’t flatter yourself.” Phlox laughed, though her voice was raspy from all her retching earlier. She let out a little sigh as she rolled over on the bed to get more comfortable. “I was actually calling to see if we could do lunch another time. I’m sick. Again.” She said as she reached over to the other side of the bed to pluck at the fabric of the pillowcase where Jack had rest his head a few nights prior. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Again, I thought you were feeling better?” Jack asked, somewhat deflated, as he dropped the goblin onto its side. “Well we can definitely reschedule, but are you okay? Do you want me to bring you some crackers or something?” Jack asked, now needing to dote on Phlox after learning of her new condition.
“Maybe. And some ginger ale too.” Phlox said with a tired hum. “I thought so too, but I woke up throwing up again and that backache is back in full force. That could be because I slept on the floor this morning though.” She said, referring to the ache in her lower back that had been plaguing her. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Say less, I will hit the quick mart on my way to your place and get your goodies. No more laying on the floor, I’m coming to take care of you today.” Jack said, already deciding he would be her loyal servant for the rest of the day. “Hit tight, I will be there before you know it.” He reassured with a confident nod, hoisting up the goblin so he can wrap up his job and be on his way.
“Drive safe, Maniac. I know how fast you like to go.” Phlox warned, though there was a soft smile on her lips at Jack’s eagerness to come and dote on her. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Jack did just as he promised. He dropped the goblin at The Society with little care and little decorum, before speeding his way to the nearest store. Jack ripped around the city in a fairly absurd, candy apple red, 1973 Cadillac Eldorado. It was his moms, not sure where she inherited it herself, but Jack ripped through New York in it. He did have to become car savvy enough to maintain it, cars like this could be expensive to repair and upkeep. While not without her battle scars, Candy still rode like a dream and carried Jack wherever he wanted to go.
He was generous about shopping, he grabbed two different kinds of crackers and four different soups. He gathered several different Gatorade flavors because he couldn’t be sure which one she would like, he also made sure to grab a liter of ginger ale and two boxes of tea on his way out; one mint and one chamomile. Emptying his cart onto the conveyor belt, the cashier noticed the items and laughed haughtily. It was an older gentleman with white hair and liver spots, Jack eyed him carefully.
“What’s so funny?” Jack asked
“Oh it just reminded me of my wife when she was pregnant, is yours sick with morning sickness?” He asked.
“It’s actually the flu…Maybe.” He replied, eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Hold on!” He said to the man, before jogging off and snatching a couple boxes of pregnancy tests from the shelf, in family planning. He grabbed an ovulation test too by mistake but they all looked the same to him, truthfully.
The old man continued to laugh about the purchase, which made Jack a little uneasy. He didn’t care if Phlox was pregnant, in the sense that, well he’d love to have babies with her. She was amazing with Lilith, and Lilith wasn’t shy about calling Phlox Mom, privately to Jack (though she was a little shy about saying it directly to Phlox). But did Phlox want to be pregnant? Would she want to have babies with Jack? He wondered this the whole drive over to Phlox’s studio apartment. His arms were full, as he scaled the walk up to her apartment, he hoped she’d receive his purchases with understanding. He wasn’t sure if him buying pregnancy tests, was breaching any barriers. Jack supposed it would be better to have them than not, the ovulation kit too, you never know.
He fumbled with the doorknob but pushed the door open with the force of a Maniac.
“Room service!” He announced, kicking the door shut behind him with his boot.
Phlox was still curled up on the bed when Jack showed up, but she sat up when she heard his voice. She turned on the bed to face him.
“About time. I know I said drive safe, but you took long enough.” Phlox joked, extending a hand upward to feel out for Jack’s face if he was close enough. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Jack dropped the bags onto the kitchen counter, before meandering down the hall to Phlox’s room. He knocked on the doorframe to announce his impending presence, he walked toward the bed and dropped his face into her hand, something that was almost routine to him now. But he liked it actually, to be held in her hand for even a minute. He put his own hand on her wrist while she held his face.
“I didn’t know what flavor of Gatorade you liked.” Jack reasoned in his defense.
