“Lilith, we’re still sleeping.” Jack scolded, not looking up from the crook of Phlox’s neck.

“But I made breakfast for the baby.” Lilith reasoned, reaching over Jack to paw at Phlox.

“Ah, the baby does love breakfast.” Phlox said, ever indulging of Lillith. She rolled over with some effort, sitting up so her back was pressed against the headboard. She yawned a little and reached out to feel at the edge of the plate Lillith had brought. “What did you make?” She asked.

Lilith pulled the plate from the end table and dragged it onto the bed, spilling some crumbs along the way.

“I made different toasts.” Lilith announced, sliding the plate in front of Phlox.

Jack was situating himself up now, yawning long and dramatically as he sat up against the headboard.

“I didn’t know what he liked, so I made different ones.” She explained.

“Oh, I suppose we should figure out which toasts he likes before he gets here so we can make them for him, hmm?” Phlox smiled and felt out the edges of the bread. “Which one is this?” She asked, hoping it wasn’t the peculiar smelling one.

Lilith leaned down to sniff the toast Phlox gestured at, she pulled back her ginger hair to keep from dropping in the food.

“That one is apple marmalade.” She answered.

“You don’t have to eat those,” Jack yawned. “I don’t want you to get sick.” He said to Phlox.

“It’s fine, it’s just toast.” Phlox tsked at Jack and lifted the toast to her mouth. She took a few crunchy, sweet bites and let out a sound of approval. “Good toast, though.” She took a few more bites before she let out a surprise squeak and jump, fumbling the bread in one hand while reaching down to her stomach with the other.

Jack sort of jumped, moving away slightly to give Phlox room but still turned to face her.

Phlox sat still and quiet for a moment before jumping a little again, eyes and mouth wide with excitement.

“He’s kicking.” She said.

“What? Right now?” Jack exclaimed, hands flying but not making contact, just hovering around her stomach. He of course wanted to feel, but he wasn’t going to just fondle her stomach without consent.

“Yes, feel! Feel!” Phlox insisted as her own hand flailed out to reach for Jack’s. She smacked the back of her hand into his and she quickly snatched it up to place to her belly. There were a few faint flutters followed by a series of more amped up kicks and wiggles.

Jack didn’t speak as he held Phlox’s stomach, his eyes growing big and glossing over a bit.

“Oh my god! I can feel him kick!” Jack exclaimed tearfully.

“I want to feel! I want to feel!” Lilith cried out then, flailing arms waving out to Phlox. Jack caught one of her little arms by the wrist.

“Careful.” Jack warned, before placing Lilith’s little hand under his, against Phlox’s stomach.

The baby gave several firm kicks against Jack and Lilith’s hands, earning a “oomph” and some laughter from Phlox.

“I’ve only ever felt little flutters.” Phlox explained. “He must have liked the toast.”

“He needs more toast!” Lilith exclaimed loudly, grabbing another slice of toast from the plate, and anxiously fisting it toward Phlox. Jack intercepted, holding it up between them both.

“Maybe more of the same toast. Make more with that marmalade.” Jack suggested.

Lilith squeaked and scrambled off the bed, floored by what a good idea that was. “I’ll be right back!” She yelled, scuttling down the hall.

Phlox laughed as she resettled against the headboard, cradling her stomach as she finished off the toast.

“He’s awfully strong.” She said to Jack.
