It had been a couple months since Lucinda had been back in the states, and it had been a whirlwind. Between telling everyone, and getting checked out by Peter, JJ jumped right into action. He started taking them apartment hunting and window shopping for different baby products. Lucinda didn’t mind though, even though she wasn’t showing yet she still found the effort sweet and endearing. It made her smile, waking up after JJ had left for work to see different apartment listings he had sent her while he was supposed to be working.

They’d looked at a few places already, some not really worth their listening price. Lots of places either in bad parts of town or the windows painted shut with lead paint; one had evidence of a squatter judging by the bags of recyclables and flat sheet wadded up on the floor by an open window.

But one place, one place Lucinda REALLY liked. Which was a feat, because normally Lucinda didn’t feel too strongly about most things; she was historically laid back. Mostly she cared that their apartment would be safe for baby Jay. But this place had qualities that reminded Lucinda of her parents house. It wasn’t particularly new but it was well maintained. There was a window over the kitchen sink that overlooked the little patio outside. The master bedroom had a built in shelf that Lucinda could picture storing all her books and art supplies. It had a little mud room which she almost never saw in newer apartments. And at the end of the hall between the master and what would be Jays rooms was a long stained glass window.

Lucinda remarked about the apartment often, which was a subtle hint at how badly she wanted it.

JJ knew long before Lucinda ever got pregnant that she was his person. He knew that they would get a house together eventually just like he knew they'd get married and have babies one day. He never doubted once that all these things would happen, he just never really anticipated the order and given that they were starting with the largest stepping stone first, well, it really put things into perspective.

He needed to put himself into gear.

He'd worked at the Society for the entirety of his working career so to say he had a little "nest egg" saved up was a vast understatement, so the idea of BUYING property in New York as well as a fancy little ring for Lucinda's finger was something he hardly even batted a lash at, though, for the sake of his proposal he certainly made it seem like a much bigger deal than it was to him.

He had put in an offer a while ago on an apartment that not only he liked, but Lucinda loved. They'd seen several places that they liked in good enough neighborhoods, but he knew this place was the one the minute they walked in and he watched Lucinda light up. He'd told her about his offer, but he didn't tell her that it had been accepted. In fact, he opted to tell her instead that there had been a counter offer placed and that the likelihood of them getting the place was "no good", all for the sake of luring her to said apartment for a "meeting" with their agent to "discuss a plan".

He'd left from work early to make it to the apartment and was waiting inside the kitchen for Lucinda, keys and the ring in his back pocket. On the counter sat all the documentation that put the house in their name, though, to Lucinda it would probably look like other paperwork and information sheets courtesy of their agent.

JJ had let Lucinda know that it wasn’t looking good for their dream apartment, apparently a counter offer had been made. It made Lucinda’s heart sink a little, she was really wanting this place. But JJ told her to meet him and their real estate agent at the apartment and figure out their options. Lucinda put on her game face and made her way their, prepared to fight for her dream apartment if need be. After a short cab ride there, she knocked on the door before opening it a little, assuming JJ was already inside.

“JJ, you here?” She called.

"Yeah, kitchen!" JJ called back, feeling his heart give a giddy and nervous leap in his chest.

Lucinda strode into the kitchen with purpose, there was an element of possession already in the way she held the doorframe in the kitchen. She looked around with a quirked brow.

“Where’s Pam? (I named the agent)” Lucinda asked before entering the kitchen fully, greeting JJ with a quick peck on the cheek.

"She stepped out for a minute." JJ fibbed with a smile as he accepted the peck, only to return it by placing a smooch to the top of Lucinda's head. "How are you and Baby J? Do you need to sit? Something to drink? I think Pam said there's still some waters in the fridge from the last open house."

Lucinda giggled a little at JJ’s fawning over her. She waved him off with a flick of her wrist.

“We’re good. Traffic was a nightmare getting here, I could have bedsores from sitting in that cab so I’m okay standing.” She began. “Is she trying to get them to accept out offer? Did she tell you anything?” Lucinda asked eagerly.

"I don't really know the logistics of everything. She said the counter offer was a lot closer to what the sellers were asking for and us trying to outbid them...well that'd be rough on the budget with Baby J coming in a few months." JJ said, trying his best to look glum. "She did leave some paperwork that's supposed to outline a plan that might work for us, but I can't make any sense of it. Maybe you could look at it?" He gestured to the papers on the counter.

“You can’t make sense of it?” Lucinda asked with a quirked brow. JJ was the smartest person she knew, not that she’d ever tell him that. She expected this home buying stuff would be as second nature to him as everything else is. But she picked up the papers none the less and began skimming over them. She flipped back and forth between sheets repeatedly, looking confused. A couple times she glanced back at JJ before researching the papers more. “I think maybe Pam printed these by accident, I think they’re the wrong papers.” She decided then.

"What makes you say that?" JJ asked, leaning on the counter as he attempted to hide a grin.

“Because, this says it’s already in our names.” Lucinda said plainly, not catching on yet.

"What? That's so odd." JJ feigned still, going over to stand next to Lucinda. He pretended to read over the document over her shoulder and let out a thoughtful hum. "Wouldn't it be weirder though if it actually was ours?"

Lucinda paused a moment before swatting at JJ with the papers.

“You turd!” She laughed, feigning any actual annoyance. “I can’t believe you got me.” She laughed.

"It was hard. I wanted to tell you as soon as Pam called me." JJ laughed as he raised an arm to 'defend' himself. "She's actually at her office finalizing things, but as of today, more or less, we're official homeowners. I got the keys and everything."
