Viktor glared hard at Ed as his words trailed. He thought he’d wanted to hurt Ed, and maybe that was partly true, but deep down he was still a soft boy who worried how that would make Bernadette see him. He didn’t want to risk her seeing him as a bad man, he didn’t want to be a bad man himself.

He clenched his hands hard in the fabric of the sweater and let out a long exhale before releasing Ed.

“You’re going to leave the city. If you don’t, don’t think for a second there won’t be consequences. The Nikitin family is everywhere, not to mention the Society. You tried to hurt one of ours, I promise no one will be as kind as me.” He said.

Ed nodded quickly, prepared to take off back down the fire escape and do just as he was told. He paused briefly, glancing over his shoulder.

“Will you tell her I’m sorry?” He asked.

“I don’t think it will mean anything. You hurt her heart.” Viktor replied.

Edmund felt a guilty twinge in his own heart. Viktor was right, Ed knew Bertie well enough that this would never be fixed with a simple apology. And the truth was it wouldn’t have helped him feel better either. He nodded quietly before retreating down the fire escape.

After everything with Ed, Viktor had asked one of the Nikitin’s footsoldiers to watch Ed closely to make sure he was good on his word and was in fact leaving the city. Meanwhile, Viktor himself made his way back home, wanting nothing more than to see Bernadette and tell her she didn’t have to worry about Ed or anyone else anymore.

He entered the suite and immediately went to prying off his shoes.

“I’m home!” He called, unsure of who was it wasn’t home.

Bernadette had been staying with the Nikitins, since everything had happened, she felt safer staying with her pseudo family. She was in the guest room when she heard Viktor call out. She sweeped her legs off the mattress and bounded down the stairs to greet him; sweet and happy like always, it’s almost like she wasn’t sold to a dog fighting ring.

“Hey! Welcome back!” She chirped.

Viktor beamed as Bernadette descended on him. He was always so happy to see her and this time was no exception. He almost could forget about the confrontation with Ed.

“Hey, sorry I took so long. I had something I needed to take care of.” He told her. “Is Mama home? Or is it just you?”

“She stepped out, she offered to take me with her but I wanted to wait for you here.” Bernadette explained.

"You should have gone with her. She likes you, she would have probably treated you to a nice snack at a cafe or something." Viktor chuckled, though, he was glad that Bernadette was here waiting for him. "But since you didn't, let's go to the kitchen. I bet we have something sweet to snack on in there." He said, wanting to take a seat with Bernadette so he could talk to her.

“Sure.” Bernadette chirped, smiling as she walked alongside Viktor to the kitchen.

"So, did you have a good day?" Viktor asked as they entered the kitchen. He gestured for Bernadette to take a seat at the counter and bade a beeline for the freezer. He rifled around for a second before finding a box of twin pops. He took one out and went to sit on a counter barstool. Once he unwrapped it, he offered one of the sticks to Bernadette so they could pry it apart together.

Bernadette grabbed the other popsicle stick and pulled it from its pair, uttering her thanks. “I did, I finished my language packet early and took a little cat nap. The bed in the guest room is nicer than my futon.” Bernadette admitted.

"You know, Christmas is soon. Maybe if you ask nicely, Santa will bring you a bed." Viktor shrugged with a little smile. "Or you could just stay here awhile longer, use it as much as you want."
