Things had never been easy for Jai Khanthavongsa.
At seventeen years old, Jai had already had an incredibly long life, or at least it felt that way. Jai was born not only his outside not reflecting his insides, but also mediumship. His birth parents rejected everything about him and made all the things in life that were already hard, ten times harder. But, fortunately, his foster mother was heaven sent. Jai had been with his foster mother since he was nine years old and she was in all ways besides biologically, his mother. She never doubted him being able to see spirits and coached him through those scary moments. She bough him binders until they could get him signed off on T, and his top surgery. She even championed him through awful and violent relationships, as best as she could anyways.
When things got too bad in the city, his foster mother, Verona, pulled him from his high school and go him enrolled in online schooling. When that still wasn’t enough, she moved them entirely. Which wasn’t so bad. They lived in a tiny apartment in the city, now they had a house. Albeit small, and a bit of a fixer upper, Jai was certainly excited about it.
Verona was in the midst of digging through some boxes, looking for something that had been misplaced. Her bouncy curls were contained only by a bandana that did nothing to stop the sweat on her brows.
“Let me drive you!” Verona called, not even needing to turn around to know Jai was sitting on the last step on the staircase, lacing up his shoes.
“It’s okay, you’ve been unpacking all morning.” Jai said. He was smiling though, the deep set dimple on his left cheek ever so pronounced. Verona often remarked he was as sweet as he looked. He had a dark complexion, and his hair was dark as well based on the roots but the rest had been freshly dyed pink; the ends curling loosely. His eyes were also dark, thin and almond shaped, creating a sort of perfect ‘T’ shape above his long and straight nose. He did had a large bandage that curved over his jaw and onto his cheek; a parting gift from his ex.
“Are you sure?” Verona asked, brows knit tightly together, considering actually staying behind to finish getting their home put together.
“Yes, I’ll be back before you know it. I promise to call if I change my mind though and need a ride home.” Jai smiled sweetly, tightening the lace on his shoe.
He stood up and quickly popped over to kiss Verona on the cheek before grabbing his keys and messenger bag before popping out the door.
"I know that you think an education is vital to our well being, but have you stopped to consider that you're doing just fine with your third grade reading level?"
Romano Mehtevas, his siblings, and his not-sibling had been partaking in the "joys" of homeschooling for a handful of months now and while there were undeniably perks to their situation, having to spend the occasional day at the neighborhood testing center for proctored tests was not one of them. Romulus called it distasteful, but Romano often commented that prisoners in maximum security got more pleasant decor than what the testing center had to offer with their bland beige walls, uncomfortable seats, and outdated computers.
"I manage, but you will all do better." Romulus replied as he buzzed about the kitchen trying to put together sack lunches and snacks for his pack of kids. Calloway was trying to help while Romano had himself stretched over the dining table looking into the kitchen, looking as disgruntled as he (or his twin) could manage, which wasn't very.
"Granddad doesn't even have his GE!" Romano pressed, slumping further.
"Granddad also was born in Christ times practically. They didn't HAVE school." Romulus rolled his eyes at his oldest, still milling about. "Not that bread, use the other one." He said to Cal in passing as he went to the fridge to grab some other things. "Listen, Rom, you're not getting out of going. It's only one day. You'll just have to deal."
"I'm just saying, it hardly seems fair that I'm held accountable when the only books you can get through are the Harry Potter series." Romano grumbled, which earned an unsympathetic eyeroll from Romulus.
"Romano, your mom worked hard teaching you guys this stuff so you could pass your tests today, so just go, will you? For her?" Romulus said as he quickly tossed each of the kids' respective snacks and drinks into their lunch boxes, zipping them all closed when Calloway stacked sandwiches inside on top. He grabbed up Romano's and went over to the kitchen table to set it down in front of his pouting son. He sighed and fluffed at Romano's hair. "The sooner you get in, the sooner you all get out. If you all can just cope, maybe I'll convince Mom to order pizza and some movies." He tried to bargain.
"Not from Giovanni's though. Their gluten free pizza tastes like literal cardboard." Romano consented with a sigh then, sitting upright and gathering his lunch box.
"Thank you." Romulus said. "Ven, Ava, come get your lunches!" He called before looking back down at Romano. "Go get your shoes on and remember to look after everyone, make sure you all make it in one piece."
Romano got up and gave his dad a little salute before grabbing his lunchbox and going to put his shoes on.
As Calloway went to do the same, Romulus grabbed onto his shoulder.
"And you remember that it's actually your job to look after everyone and to make sure you all make it one piece." He instructed.
Romano and Cal both got their shoes and and went to sit on the front porch with their bags while they waited for Ava and Venturo to join them. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Venturo wasn’t far behind the other two boys, hobbling out of the bathroom as he tried to get a boot on. His tooth brush was stuck in his mouth, it appeared he was the last one out of bed.
“Coming!” He called, fumbling in the hallway with his shoes. He paused in the kitchen to grab his lunch and spit in the sink, abandoning his toothbrush there. “Bye Dad, see you later.” He he said quickly in passing, going to join Cal and Romano on the porch.
Although there was no point in being in a rush, as Ava was still getting ready. While she had gotten up on time, she of course had to primp; doing her hair and makeup, making sure she would undoubtedly be the cutest girl in the test center. After her ponytail was set high on her head and her highlight was popping, she grabbed her lunch to join the boys outside. She set her lunch on the end table that was on the porch, fastening her hoops in her ears before spotting a pink haired boy coming out of house next door that had been dormant all summer.
“Maybe he hasn’t started yet? I think I just saw the moving truck last night.” Venturo suggested.
Jai was in the process of putting his earbuds in, closing the gate to the fence, when he noticed a group of teens next door that were staring. In the past, that wasn’t a good sign. He grimaced briefly before putting his head down and pulling his hood over his head.
"I'm not being obvious." Romano scowled at his sister. "Let's just get going to that busted ass concentration camp of a test center so we can get in and get out." He said, leaping off the porch then, leading the charge, and, coincidentally enough, following after the other teenager they'd just seen. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“How can you be so dramatic, it’s going to take longer to get there then taking the actual test.” Ava replied, falling in line behind Venturo who caught up to his twin.
Jai could hear the teens at his back, which was also historically, a bad thing. He bristled under his hoodie and tried to quicken his pace, suddenly regretting not getting a ride from his mom.
“Do you think, he thinks, that we’re following him?” Venturo asked.
"I mean... maybe. We kind of are, aren't we?" Calloway shrugged.
"Do you think we are? Like he's going tot he same place?" Romano asked, though that seemed a bit unlikely. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"Oh, no, I absolutely think you could use a different brother if it means I get a buffer. Ava's right, go talk to him." Cal said.
Romano made a thoughtful sound, as if he were contemplating, but apparently it didn't take much as he tromped off ahead to catch up with the other teen.
"Hey! Hey, excuse me!" He called out as he approached. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"Hey, this is stupid, but are you going to the testing center? I mean, it's like passed school's starting time and everything and you're walking the same way we are. I thought maybe you'd be heading that way too." Romano said, keeping pace with the other boy. He offered a hand out. "I'm Romano, by the way. We saw you leaving the house across the street today. Did you just mvoe in?" _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Jai looked skeptically at the hand, but seemed eased enough by the boy’s friendly demeanor. He reached out and took his hand, hand littered in different colored bandaids. He smiled, his deep single dimple, sinking into his cheek.
“My name’s Jai, and yeah! I am headed to the testing center and I did just move in.” He answered.
“Jai? That’s a different name.” Romano commented as he gave the other boys hand a shake. “That place must’ve been a steal for your folks to have moved in. It’s been vacant for ages now. I heard it’s super haunted or super stinky from a busted sewage pipe or something. I don’t know.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“It means heart, or loosely anyways.” Jai replied and made a funny face at the ‘haunted’ comment. “Hm I don’t think it’s haunted, but my moms been working hard to make it nice. So I don’t think it smells bad.” He answered.
