“What? Really? But it’s Alton Brown! King of the Quirky Kitchen!” Romano said aghast. “Are you busy after your tests? If you aren’t, you should come over. Dad said he was going to order us pizza for being cooperative and we can totally watch an episode or ten.”

It had been a couple weeks since Jai had met Romano and his troupe. They’d even hung out again a few times after, while his mother was skeptical, Jai optimistic. Romano was nice and funny, and of course he was cute as well. Jai liked listening to him talking about Look Whose Talking, another timeless masterpiece Jai hadn’t seen yet, or watch him catch bug on the sidewalk with the neighborhood kids. His family seemed nice enough too, equally silly and rowdy as Romano. His Dad was handsome too, Jai could see where the twins got it. Their Mother, Remedy, reminded Jai an awful lot of his own mother; rough around the edges and sort of...Study.

All in all there wasn’t anything outwardly troubling about the family, so that’s why it was confusing for Jai to come home and see their home vandalized. The Torino and motorcycle parked out front had been egged, the dead tree in the front yard hanging over the chain link fence was tp’ed, and spray painted in big red letters: MONSTERS. There were a couple windows were busted, something thrown though the glass, but the lettering is what stood out most to Jai as he could see it from the bus stop. The neighborhood was by no means the best, it seemed to be sort of forgotten and tucked away from the city’s eyes. The roads were littered with potholes and the roots from overgrown trees were tearing up the pavement and foundations. But Jai loved how close everyone in the neighborhood appeared to be, and it seemed like Romano and his siblings might’ve been the oldest kids there, is this something the little kids could do?

The whole family was hands on deck, picking up toilet paper, hosing off the car and bike; doing their best as a large family to tackle the even larger mess.

It had been awhile since Romano’s sister Ava had been assaulted and while there had been a good deal of change from then until now, Romano was beginning to feel hopeful for a life returning to a sort of normalcy. He and his siblings were right on track to finish their studies just the same as everyone else, Romano and his twin were even set to graduate; they had all their same friends in the neighborhood still (if you could call an army of children friends) and Romano had even made another in Jai, and between The Society and Han’s group, Romano wasn’t even really worried about being attacked again like Ava had been.

Until now.

He wasn’t scared or sad about the situation presently, but he was admittedly angry. He and his family hadn’t done anything to deserve this, it felt wholly unfair as he helped wash off the egg from the car while his mom and dad set to patching up the windows the best they could and the rest of the family cleaned up.

“Hey...” Jai greeted quietly as he walked up to the twin washing the car, no visible eyebrow scar, must be Romano. “Can I ask what happened?” Jai asked, a bit in awe of the devastation.

Romano gave a little start, not having heard Jai come up, but he quickly gave a stiff little shrug at the question.

“Just some stupid punks trashing our house. I don’t really know. We were out shopping with dad and it was like this when we got home.” He explained, trying to keep it vague. Ever since Ava’s incident, their Uncle JJ said it would be wise to keep their being werewolves on the down-low. But did it even matter at this point?

Jai made a slight face before dropping his book bag on the sidewalk and shrugging off his jacket.

“Well I know when my Mom’s car got egged in the city, we asleep when it happened. The eggs dried and took off the paint when we tried to wash it, this is pretty fresh..Let me help, I’ll roll out our hose, it’s got a hard wash setting.” Jai nodded.

Romano opened his mouth to acknowledge the help, but paused when he heard some passerby comments.

“Monsters? Does that mean they’re like those things that attacked the city before?” A woman asked in a hushed whisper.

“Probably.” A man replied. “Let’s just get inside.”

Romano felt himself bristle in...guilt? Shame? No, more like self-consciousness.

“Jai, you don’t have to help us clean it up. It’s okay.” He said.

Jai puffed up upon hearing the same comments, but wasn’t discouraged.

“They’re the real monsters...Try to ignore them, I want to help.” Jai insisted with a nod. Had he already had the hose on, he’d given the strangers a spray.

Romano looked up at Jai, noting his insistence and the way his cheeks and chest puffed. If it were a more lighthearted circumstance, Romano was sure he would have smiled and maybe even chuckled a little at how cute it made Jai look. But right now, it felt not so lighthearted and he was still a bit self conscious.

“Are you sure? I mean...they’re not entirely wrong.” He admitted, vaguely.

“What do you mean?” Jai asked with an arched brow. “Even if it were true in any sense, that’s rude, and this is awful.” He added, gesturing to the vandalism before him.

“I mean, yeah, you’re right, this is...horrible. But I mean it in... I don’t know... we’re... not normal, to put it lightly.” Romano shrugged.

“Is anyone?” Jai asked, he reached into one of the bucket by the car and got out a rag to start wiping off the car. He wasn’t going to stand by and not help. “If you want me to agree with you, you may need to be more specific.”

“I mean, we’re more of the...I guess literal sort? I don’t know, not like the kind of monster who eats the last slice of pizza, though I’ve been known to do that too, but like...not...human.” Romano admitted.
