It had been nearly seventeen years on the nose since Astrid had last felt like this, which was why there was no mistaking what this was.
The sun had barely begun to peak over the city skyline, the neighborhood streetlights still dimly glowing before they shut off for the day, when Astrid woke up with a nauseating start. She hadn't been feeling well the last few weeks, more exhausted and easily sick, but over the last few days she had been woken up every morning with her stomach hot and rolling, driving her to rush to the bathroom to retch up whatever she had left in her from dinner the night before. Today was no exception as she attempted to knot her long blond hair in a fist while her other hand gripped the side of the toilet where she was crouched, attempting to quietly empty her stomach as to not wake her sleeping husband.
Astrid often prided herself over the fact that her little family apparently had immunity systems of gold with little to no illness over the years, in fact, Lucita had gotten multiple perfect attendance awards. So that's why when her illness had started a few weeks prior, Astrid had an inkling of an idea as to the source: pregnancy.
She and Remus had been especially careful not to get pregnant again the first several years after having had Lucita. They had agreed that while they were in a secure enough place to raise one child, adding another one to the mix would make things infinitely tighter. It also helped that Remus was absolutely mortified of upsetting Rundin again like he had when Astrid got pregnant in the first place. Even after Remus had gotten a handful of raises and promotions at work, and even after Astrid went to work as a secretary for her mother's practice to add to their income, the twosome hadn't brought up the idea of expanding on their family despite having the means to do so, but Astrid supposed that there was no time like the present since it seemed like it was happening whether they discussed it or not.
She sat on the floor for several minutes after she was done retching, making sure that she was actually done, before she released her hair and flushed the toilet. She got up and went to the sink to brush her teeth and wash her face before heading back to join Remus in bed.
They had long since moved out of their starter apartment, settling for a little house in a quieter neighborhood not too far from Remus's brother and family. It was a nice little two story that even had a bedroom and "den" to spare for whenever they had guests (mostly Romulus's kids, surely), and perhaps the nicest feature, Astrid thought at the moment, had a master suite.
The bed was hardly a walk from the bathroom and it still felt warm from when Astrid had repelled out of it, though this was perhaps attested to the fact that she and Remus slept with the heater on nearly every night, a habit he'd never broken out of from the early days of them dating. She crawled back in and tucked herself back into the blankets. She sank back into her usual place, nestling against Remus with her cheek pressed into his shoulder.
"Hey...Remus?" She spoke quietly. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Remus was the epitome of content, although Remus would’ve said the same thing had you asked him while living in his seedy apartment. But life only seemed to get better all the time since being with Astrid, she was the best thing that happened to him and continued to gift his life with bliss. A baby, their precious baby girl who was no baby anymore. Their beautiful home, jobs that provided for them so that they could provide for Lucita.
Their house was plenty big for Remus, almost too big sometimes. Often Natas would confine Remus to a cage, some sometimes big spaces felt uncomfortable. But this house didn’t make Remus feel bad, he could sink into their big bed with Astrid tucked into his side and drift away happily. He had heard Astrid get up, though he drifted back asleep almost immediately; he’d worked the night before and was exhausted. But his ears perked and he forced an eye open when he heard Astrid murmur out to him.
“Hm, si mi corazón?“ He answered sleepily, exhaling deeply through his nose as he tried to rouse himself awake.
"I know it's early, but...could you go to the store for me?" Astrid asked, reaching up to idly mess with some of his hair as she contemplated her next words. "I think I need a pregnancy test." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“It’s alright, I’ll go grab one for you.” Remus yawned, kissing Astrid on her forehead before rolling out of bed. He must’ve been really tired, it didn’t even occur to him what Astrid has asked for. He milled about the room sleepily as he got dressed, putting on socks and his pants. Then, he paused and looked over his shoulder at a Astrid. He squinted at her, sleep still in his eyes.
Astrid watched as Remus went about the room and couldn't help but give a little snort of laughter. Clearly Remus hadn't heard her, suspicions confirmed when he asked her again what she needed. She sat up and brought her knees up to her chest beneath the blankets, folding her arms over them.
"A pregnancy test, Remus." She repeated, a little smile on her face.
Despite not having talked about the idea of having more children, Astrid hardly thought Remus would be mad about it if she was indeed pregnant. Their first daughter had been an absolute blessing, albeit too smart for her own good sometimes, so Astrid wasn't worried about their ability to raise another good one. Plus, with having two steady incomes from the time Lucita entered school allowed them to feed into their savings over the years. They were more than financially able to take care of another one or two (sike, three) kids. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
"Mhm, that's what I said the first time." Astrid grinned at Remus's reaction. "I've been feeling the same way I felt when I first found out I was pregnant with Lucita." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Well alright,” Remus smiled and chuckled a little. He stood up straight again and continued to get dressed. “Do you want anything else while I’m out?” He asked.
"No, just hurry back so your spot doesn't get too cold." Astrid smiled as she went to lay back down, watching Remus as he continued to dress. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“I’ll be right back.” Remus said, kissing Astrids forehead again before turning around to leave.
He wasn’t right back though. Remus got a bit off track at the store, he got the pregnancy test and then got to looking, if Astrid is pregnant, he should get a few other things she might need. A half hour later, he muscled through the bedroom door with two big plastic bags. Cocoa butter and nipple cream, mothers milk and thistle tea; he’d even grabbed a little flannel onesie and a bottle warmer that was on sale that he thought was neat. After dropping the bags on the mattress it occurred to him that he may have gone overboard.
“Uh well, I got your test.” He said sheepishly, fishing the package out of the bag.
Astrid had dozed back off almost as soon as Remus left and stirred awake when she heard him return. She was still hugging his pillow, as she often did when he wasn't in bed with her, when he came in and set the bags on the bed. She rolled back over and sat up, giving a sleepy little laugh when she saw the bags. She reached to take the test but then poked around in the bags a bit.
"You did some shopping I see." She smiled, pulling at the sleeve of a onesie, which she caressed between her fingers before looking up at Remus. "So, I take it that if I am pregnant, it's a good thing?" She asked him. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Of course! I mean, I’m scared to tell your dad but I think it may always be like that. But yes, having babies with you will never be a bad thing.” Remus declared.
"I mean, I agree, it's just that we tried so hard NOT to get pregnant again for so long after Lucita and then we never really talked about having any more kids." Astrid explained, but she gave a soft little laugh. "But I have to admit, it would be nice having another baby, especially since Lu somehow got all grown up on us." _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“Yeah, I know. But I guess I just figure, at the rate we try so hard to prevent it and have prevented it all this time, maybe it was just meant to be. Something about the right time, maybe?” Remus shrugged a little, sitting down on the edge of the bed.
"Would you be disappointed if I'm not pregnant? If it wasn't the right time?" Astrid asked, curious, as she sat up and scooted to the edge of the bed to sit beside Remus, still holding the pregnancy test in hand. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
