Emerson noted that Marnie was talking to, or about, him when he saw his name on her lips, but thankfully when he missed the rest at least Grey was able to bail him out and sign the question to him.

"Oh, I work. I don't go to school though." He signed back, hoping Grey could interpret. He wasn't confident enough to speak aloud to her parents still.

"He works, but he's not a student." Grey explained.

"Why not?" Marnie pressed. "Did he already graduate or...?" She asked between bites.

"Oh um...No." Grey stammered.

"Grey, don't mumble, please. What are you saying?" Marnie scolded.

"Sorry, I'm sorry. Um, no he's not in college but he completed high school." Grey explained.

"Why not?" Marnie asked then, eyes narrowing.

"Honey, it's rude to pry." Alister said quietly.

Emerson bit back a frown when he read Marnie's lips, but decided to attempt an answer. He tapped at Grey's arm to get her attention for translation.

"I decided not to go to college because the fact of the matter is that it is trickier for me. I'd hate to slow down a class because I need an interpreter and I'm not a fan of the classes they offer at deaf institutions. I decided I could be successful enough through my efforts." He signed.

Grey repeated what Emerson signed, earning a scowl from Marnie but Alister chimed in immediately.

"I think that's very admirable." Alister said. "Most children your age cannot support themselves, let alone encountering adversity."

Grey nodded, smiling at her Dad before signing back to Emerson what had been said.

"So, you kids are living together, things are getting serious then?" Alister asked.

"I'd certainly think so." Emerson nodded, smiling a bit as he glanced over at Grey.

Grey smiled back, feeling a little more comfortable now.

"So, what's next for you too then?" Alister asked.

Grey made a bit of a face, she wasn't sure what her Dad implied by that, but it was kind of the most appropriate segway.

"Well, Daddy, actually there's something we'd like to share about that." Grey began.

Emerson generally tried to stay positive, but after the whole ordeal with his parents, he worried that Grey's parents would yield no better results.

He reached for Grey's hand.

Grey took Emerson's hand, squeezing it.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Marnie asked, looking up quickly. Marnie was a pretty bright woman, she already was picking up where this was going and she was not here for it.

"Um, well, Mom. I'm..." Grey started mumbling, losing her nerve before clearing her throat. "We're having a baby." She said, voice cracking as she saw something in her Mom's face change.

"That's ridiculous, you cannot support a child." Marnie began quickly.

"Marnie." Alister tried to interject.

"You don't have a career, he certainly doesn't have one."

"Marnie!"

"You barely know this person, you'll be setting this child up for failure."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Emerson signed hastily when he read Marnie's lips. "I haff a jawb." He spoke aloud. "Gwey too. We can do et."

Marnie leaned over the table slightly, mouthing slowly at Emerson. "Just because you could, does not mean you should."

"Marnie, you don't mean that." Alister sighed.

"You can't tell me that you support this?" She questioned quickly.

"No, well, I'm not sure. It's a lot to process." Alister muttered.

"There isn't anything to process. Grey, you're adopted. You don't even know what your genes are like, you could pass something awful on to this child for all you know."

"I-I don't think that's really an issue. I'm healthy, the doctors all seem pleased with my physical condition." She muttered, shrugging somewhat as she shrank in her chair.

"Honey, I DO agree that maybe, you guys have more to think about in terms of a pregnancy." Alister said slowly, not so sure himself.

Emerson felt hot in the face, even more so when he watched how Grey shrank at her parent's words. He stood up and leaned over towards Marnie as she did to him.

"Maybeh yew tew have alott to think about yewr own parenting. Yew should go." He said, firmly.

"Fine, I think we will." Marnie said, expression stern as she stood up abruptly and stormed towards the door.

Alister furrowed his brows. "I'm sorry, honey." He said quietly before standing up and walking out after his wife.

Grey wasn't terribly surprised, but she was still hurt very much by the things that were said. She didn't think they would be bad parents, they certainly wouldn't treat their child this way. She sighed, slouching in her seat still, hugging her arms. At least it was over, everyone knew who needed to know.

Emerson's chest, puffed up with frustration, deflated as Marnie and Alister both left. He turned to look at Grey, frowning as she sat slouched in her chair. He sat back down in his own chair, turned to face her. He reached out to touch at her cheek.

"Yew okay?" He asked.

Grey pondered on it a moment, "Yeah. I'm okay." She decided finally as she let out a breath.

"I'm sorry, I didn't want any of it to go this way." Emerson signed slowly, a tight frown on his lips. "I thought everyone else would be happy too."
