Bernadette felt like her whole like was a long wait to get here.

Growing up on the Princes islands was lonely, even if her Dad was here. The princes islands are a cluster of islands off the coast of Istanbul, it’s mostly free of cars but full of national forests, museums and gorgeous architecture. Bernadette loved the tourist season, because she loved to people watch. When she was old enough, she’d run to the pier and watch the ferry boats unload travelers. She’d listen to them and make games of it, how many languages could she hear? How kids to a family? How many women could’ve been her mother?

Bernadette didn’t get the chance to meet her Mom since she didn’t survive childbirth. If her Dad has picture’s, she had never seen them. So even though she knew her Mom was dead, as a young girl she would perch herself on on stone walls and watch beautiful older women and ‘pick out her mom.’ She would take in big gulps of the warm summer air, the pine trees and the salt in the sea. It made her hair big and wavy and her sinuses clear; she’d lay in the grass and admire the way the sweat glistened on her her tan skin. Her Nannies, always a rotation of older women with big bosoms and stubborn ways would always have to drag her in at night for dinner and her bath. But even the nights made her heart swell. Bernadette would eavesdrop on teens who snuck away from tour groups and families to giggle and romp around in the fields by her house. She could see lights all the way down the hill and to the pier, the island alive with alien people, alight with cellphones and cigarettes, their treasure’s shining under starlight and finding it’s way to her window.

But the fall, the winters, and even some of the spring, were unbearable. The ocean too treacherous and the air sometimes so cold it could bite. When it was like that, the ferries wouldn’t come, the nannies were stuck inland, her Dad would hold up in his office at the museum. Bernadette would have to close all the doors and windows and seal up all the cracks and creases with towels to keep the wind and rain out. And all she could hear was the wind howling, the branches on the pine rustling violently against each other and the roof tiles rattling; threatening to fall and shatter.

That quiet was enough to make her crazy. So when her Dad mentioned in passing he got a new job that would take him to the states, New York specifically, she broke down. Absolutely hysterical, Bernadette begged him tearfully to take her with him.

To her surprise, he agreed.

It was all very jarring. It was like summer all the time with the noises and people. Aslan paid for her own apartment, a studio apartment that was in the upper east side. She looked out of her window now and could see the MET, which sort of reminded her of home being so close to a museum. It was differen’t though, the windows in this apartment were huge, floor to ceiling but they didn’t open. Coming and going through an elevator made it weird to leave the front door open since it led to a carpeted hallway. There were more cars then she had ever seen in her life and she had never been to a whole foods before. But now she did all her shopping there, and everything was so big and loud it made her feel even smaller somehow.

Finding her way to the Society was even more nerve wracking. Fumbling about with a map in a new place, she’d never met or seen another werewolf before. She didn’t have her Mom or Dad to guide her or tell her what to expect. But they were nice and patient, gave her lots of pamphlets and information. They gave her a good list of schools that had other supernaturals there. But what stuck with her was a name, a name she could remember and find another supernatural.

“What’s the school where the youngest Nikitin goes?”

That’s where she wanted to go. She had a name, she could meet another person definitely like her.

Problem was Bernadette had only ever been homeschooled by her nannies. So upon enrollment, she needed to turn in a check from her Dad to cover her tuition, and go shopping for school supplies and her uniform. Finding and figuring out her locker was a nightmare, trying to keep up in class almost brought her to tears.

Was this move really going to be worth it? It was all so different and still, lonely. But when she saw the trophy case, and saw one for wrestling. She peered into the glass, squinting to read the name Nikitin on the wrestling trophy. So at the end of what felt like a very long day, she stood outside the gymnasium were she was beamed in the head with a volleyball earlier today. The sound of a man yelling and blowing a whistle leaked out of the cracked doors. She could hear other things too, grunting and thuds against mats, she peeked in carefully; it looked scary.

Was this Nikitin person going to be nice?

All his life Viktor was always considered a bit of an after thought. When his parents were content having two kids and Viktor happened, they didn’t seem to mind it. When Sasha became known for his sharp cunning and Mila became known for her strange beauty, Viktor was only ever really remembered as the other Nikitin kid. While this might have been upsetting to some, it didn’t really bother Viktor. He was always a very good natured boy, his father often reminded everyone that when he was born, he had a smile on his face (though this wasn’t confirmed). But as good natured as he was, he’d be a liar if he didn’t say he was excited to be the only Nikitin kid in school, giving him the opportunity to be someone more than just “the other one”.

Viktor has always been a bear of a boy, towering over the other members of his family by the time he was thirteen, so when he got to high school and the chance to join the wrestling team came up, he took it without hesitation. He’d hoped it would give everyone else something to remember him by because, surely, he’d be good at it with his size and stamina, but as time went on, he grew to like it more and more. He liked it best even when he was able to pin the winning match in a tournament or two. But still, outside of the wrestling team, he didn’t really notice if anyone actually paid any more attention to him, so he carried on with today’s practice like any other day, unknowing that he had in fact been noticed.

He currently had Joseph, one of his teammates in his year, pinned to the mat without any signs of faltering. The other boy grunted and wiggled, though he didn’t really budge, before he gave a pathetic little tap on the mat, which earned a whistle and his release. He sputtered a bit and then laughed, looking at Viktor as he rolled off him and away.

“Jesus, have you been working out more? I thought you were going to rip my arm off.” He said.

Viktor gave a bashful chuckle and reached to rub the back of his neck.

“Gee, sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He said before looking up when their coach gave another whistle.

“Gauskin, Nikitin, good match. Help everyone put up the mats then hit the showers. Don’t forget, everyone, we have a tournament at the end of the month so practices are mandatory until then. Miss one and you’ll be benched. Dismissed.” The coach said before heading towards his office at the other end of the gym.

“You hear that, Vik, better not miss any practice. We need you to win.” Someone said as they brushed by and pat his back.

“For real.” Another added as mats were being picked up and cleared.

“Well, I’m not that good.” Viktor pinked and grinned his classic puppy-dog grin. He went to stand up then and help with clean up.

Bernadette continued to watch nervously. She heard the name Nikitin again, it was one of the two boys currently on the mat. One of which was massive in size, Bernadette pinked a little. She had never seen a boy so tall or muscular, it was exciting and intimidating all at once. Bernadette was a tiny girl, five feet and three inches. Not much dimension to her, no sloping curves or mature breasts. Just petite and skinny.

She heard the word showers, would it be weird to wait out here til then?

Viktor eventually got to his feet and set to hauling mats towards the end of the gym where they were kept stacked. He glanced up when he heard two boys whispering to one another.

“She’s new. I’m pretty sure I saw her in my Language Arts class.” Dillard said quietly.

“Are you sure? It looks like she’s looking for a friend or something.” Matthew uttered back.

Viktor followed their gaze to the door where a girl was poking in. He looked at Matthew and Dillard and decided he’d do what they would not. He set down his mats and went over to the doors, smiling his classic grin as he did so.

“Hello, are you looking for someone? Can I help you?” He asked.

Bernadette looked startled, she looked up at the boy.

“Oh um, yes. I think so. But I’m interrupting aren’t I? Sorry about that.” Bernadette sputtered. English had been about the only study she did well at in Istanbul, but her accent was quite thick. Even though the boy was smiling and polite, Bernadette was mentally drained from the day. From the moment she walked in the school she was in the way, falling behind and not where she was supposed to be. So she had defaulted to apologizing.

Viktor shook his head and gave a little wave of his hand.

“You aren’t interrupting at all. We’re all done here.” He assured her. “I know everyone here, who are you looking for?” He asked.

“Um, I hope I’m saying this right...Nikitin?” Bernadette answered slowly.

Viktor blinked, surprised, but then his whole face lit up as he placed a hand to his chest.

“That’s me. I’m Viktor Nikitin.” He nodded proudly. “You’re looking for me?”

Bernadette looked surprised, when she’d overheard youngest Nikitin, she assumed smaller. She was also surprised that she had actually found him, but she didn’t expect to get this far. Bernadette hadn’t thought of what she was even going to say, she kind of peeked around him to make sure no one else was listening.

Here goes nothing.

“Uh, this is strange but are you...” She cupped her hand near her mouth to whisper. “A werewolf?”

Viktor stared for a moment, a smile practically frozen on his face. Had he heard right? Did this girl ask if he was a werewolf?

“Um...pardon?” He asked, though out of al the Nikitin siblings he was the poorest at lying so it was obvious he HAD heard.

Bernadette could’ve exploded with embarrassment, her ears burn hot and she felt her eyes get a little wet. It was one of those days where nothing went right, even the one thing you needed the most. How stupid was she? How could she recover from this?

“I’m sorry, my English isn’t good, I’ll just go. Sorry for bothering you.” Bernadette sputtered nervously before turning on her heels and doing her best to not make a spectacle of herself further, by sprinting away.

As the girl whirled to run away, Viktor caught the scent then, a scent he’d known his whole life.

The wolf.

Without thinking, he quickly reached out to grab the girl’s wrist, eyes a bit wide. He’d never met a werewolf outside of his own family or their circle. This was a first.

“Wait, are you,” he paused and immediately became fretful when he saw the tears pricking the girls eyes. “Oh no, I’m sorry, are you crying? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.” He sputtered quickly.

“No, no, it’s okay. I’m fine, I’m fine. I’m sorry for bothering you.” Bernadette insisted, waving her hand though it was obvious she was on the brink of tears.

“No no no, I...are you asking because,” Viktor leaned in to whisper as she had, “youre one too?”

Bernadette sniffed, wiping at her eyes then before giving a hesitant nod.
