“Oh, I didn’t think I’d need those. Should I go to the corner store?” Calloway asked earnestly. He never really felt like he’d won Mila’s parents over wholly, even after their marriage.

Viktor drifted back into the kitchen to set the apron and mits down, even going as far as grabbing the salad and rolls to take to the table. He set everything down before going to sit beside Bernadette.

“It all smells good, Bertie.” Adrik complimented as he too wandered into the dining area then after Mila.

“I kid, squirt. You can grab a seat.” Asha dismissed Calloway before grabbing glasses for said wine.

“Oh thank you! I know Viktor likes it, but I hope you guys will too.” Bertie admitted.

“I’m sure we will. It’s not everyday we get home cooked food.” Adrik said as he settled at the head of the tablE.

“Yeah, I’m not sure what we did to deserve this treat.” Sasha added.

“Uh,” Bernadette nervously glanced to Viktor. “Just seemed like a nice thing to do.” Bernadette chuckled quietly.

“Mm, you and Viktor should do nice things more often then.” Adrik teased, not noticing the look Bertie and Viktor shared.

Though, Sasha did.

Sasha cocked a brow as he watched the twosome suddenly became flustered about something.

Calloway entered the room and took a seat beside Mila.

Mila noticed too. She quirked a curious brow, looking at the twosome and back to Sasha to share a silent inquiry. Asha sat a glass of wine down for Adrik and another for herself before taking her place beside Adrik.

Bernadette still looked nervous. She wasn’t as worried earlier, but now they were all there. It had to come up, but how? Bernadette wouldn’t be the unnerved if it were her own father seated across from her. Would Viktor’s family still accept her after this?

Sasha gave a subtle little shrug when he caught Mila’s inquiring glance. He didn’t have a clue what that was about either.

“So, What has everyone been up to? It’s been so long since we’ve all been together.” Adrik asked.

“Oh, just work, sir. The Society has kept me busy with cases for them.” Calloway said first.

“Mm, about the same here.” Sasha said then, his gaze narrowing on Viktor as he watched his little brother give a subtle wring of his napkin under the table.

“Oh, uh, school, stuff.” Viktor said, looking toward Bernadette then. Much like her, he wasn’t sure when to bring it up either now that everyone was there.

“What about you, Bernadette ?” Mila asked then, honing in on Bertie; causing her to jump a little at the sudden acknowledgement.

Bernadette was already a little unnerved by Mila. Which was funny, because Mila was as precious looking as a porcelain doll. But she made herself very clear about how fiercely protective she was of her ‘baby brother.’ Mila could smell something was fishy, and she wasn’t afraid to coax it out of Bernadette.

“Ah mostly the same, I've started applying to some colleges, looking at part time work for after graduation.” Bernadette rambled quickly.

“Oh, that’s an awful lot, Bernadette.” Adrik noted, sounding impressed.

“She’s an awfully busy lady,” Viktor said, giving Bernadette a smile and sidelong glance before he reached for her hand under the table, “and we will both only get busier.”

Now was as good of time as any.

“Because...why?” Mila asked slowly.

“Because I’m pregnant.” Bernadette blurt, finally erupting from anxiety.

Asha made a grimaced, not expecting the news to be revealed so suddenly. But, she was happy it had come to light sooner rather than later, even if it came with zero grace or tact.

Adrik felt himself gape at the news.

“Excuse me?” He said, as if he maybe hadn’t heard right. He looked over to his wife in hopes of an explanation of some sort.

“Well, um, Papa, Bernadette is pregnant. With um...my baby.” Viktor said slowly.

Sasha’s eyes were wide as he looked between his parents for their reactions. When no one said anything immediately, he spoke up.

“Since...since when? Haven’t you guys only been together for like...two months?” He asked.

“Well...yeah, but we’ve known each other longer than that.” Viktor said, giving Bernadette’s hand a squeeze.

Bernadette nodded, squeezing back.

“That’s right. I know it’s very surprising, but we’ve got a plan! And I’ll continue my schooling, and pursue a good career to support us.” She explained.

“And I’ll work for Papa as much as I can and take care of the baby so Bertie can do what she has to.” Viktor nodded surely.

Adrik was still staring at Asha.

“Did you know?” He asked.

Asha was quiet a minute. She didn’t like keeping secrets from Adrik, but Viktor implored to be the one to tell his father.

“Yes. I bought the pregnancy tests and, ahem, explained to Viktor how it could happen.” Asha began quietly. “He wanted to be the one to tell you.”

“Papa, I begged Mama not to say anything. I just... I wanted to tell you like a man. I wanted to tell you about it and tell you that we had a plan.” Viktor said, brows pinching. “I know...we know it’s not the way things are supposed to be and I’m sure it would have been better if we...um...waited, but we’re sure that we can make it work. We’re very sure. And very happy.”

Adrik looked at Viktor, face tight as he listened. He never thought he’d be in this situation.

But it was what it was, wasn’t it?

“You realize it’s going to be anything but easy, yes? Babies are precious, but hard all the same.” He said.

“I know, Papa, but we’re determined to do our best.” Viktor said, squeezing Bernadette’s hand tighter. “I’ll make sure I’m a good papa and partner.”

Adrik sighed and looked to Bernadette.

“Have you told your father yet?” He asked.
