Bernadette looked despondent, already dreading her Fathers blatant disinterest.

“I’m pregnant.” She said plainly.

Aslan was staring at the wall behind Bernadette, feigning eye contact. He looked thoughtful, searching for the right response.

“I see. Was the uh, union consensual?” He asked.

“Yes, father.”

“Are you alright with it?”

“Yes, I am.”

“I see...Well, congratulations.” He nodded weakly before deciding it was okay to look away, back to his book.

Bernadette didn’t look surprised, but she didn’t look happy or satisfied.

Viktor's chest puffed even more and he looked like he was about to spout something bitter at Aslan, but it was Adrik who spoke up first.

"Excuse me? That's all you have to say?" Adrik asked, brows furrowed. He didn't know what he was expecting from Aslan, but as a parent involved in the current situation, he'd hoped for some sort of reaction.

“I’ve already explained to your son that my relationship with Bernadette is unorthodox. As long as she is well, that is enough.” Aslan explained with some tone of dismissal.

After his brush with Viktor, Aslan had some time to think about how to carry himself in similar situations. He became emotional when confronted by Viktor’, it did not serve him to be emotional in this situation.

"I'm sorry, but she's your daughter and this is a very serious situation, so it is absolutely not enough." Adrik scoffed, stepping forward over to the desk. He reached out to grab the book in Aslan's hand, forcing it down onto the desk. "You realize that they're both children, correct? Our children? We're responsible for their well-being, so you acting as distant as you do with Bertie doesn't cut it."

Aslan was surprised by his book being taken from his grasp, Bertie was too; hands cupped over her mouth as a little gasp escaped. Aslan tried to regain composure.

“Bernadette isn’t like other children. She’s spent much time on her own, she’s never needed coddling and she doesn’t need it now.” Aslan huffed.

"Is that what she's told you? Did she ask to be left alone by you?" Adrik asked, though he knew the answer. "I don't think she did, and even if that were the case, that's not how parenting works."

“It works for us.” Aslan replied with furrowed brows, knowing as the words left his mouth that it wasn’t true. Not really anyways, he knew Esther was rolling in her grave at how he had chosen to raise Bernadette.

“It’s okay, Mr. Nikitin. Please don’t fight with him, it’s not worth it.” Bernadette uttered from the door way.

"I think you mean it works for you." Adrik snapped, irritated.

Viktor could tell his dad was getting bristled and he looked to Bernadette when she spoke up.

"Bertie...I think he needs to hear it." Viktor said gently to her.

“It’s too late,” Bertie pouted somewhat. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”

Almost an adult, and already having endured an adolescences alone; having a present father now wouldn’t be the same.

“It does. But Bernadette has a roof over her head, she’s never gone to bed hungry; she doesn’t need anything else from me.” Aslan replied.

“Can we please go? I don’t like this.” Bernadette whimpered, anxious tears pricking her eyes.

“I never wanted children, but when my wife got pregnant, she wanted it so badly. I wanted it for her. I watched her fall in love with an unborn baby and then die for it..To look at her is to look at my dead wife, it is agony!” Aslan cried, causing Bernadette to wince.

At that, Adrik's eyes immediately snapped to gold and his shoulders stiffened as he tried to stay collected for a bit longer. Though that was a challenge.

"Viktor...take Bernadette to the car." He said, his voice already getting deep and guttural.

Viktor had stiffened as well, wanting to yell angrily at what Aslan had just said, be angry because it was wrong and it hurt Bernadette, but he could tell that it made Adrik angrier, and, well, he wasn't in a position to argue with his father.

He squeezed Bernadette's hand tight and coaxed her to exit with him.

Bernadette didn’t need much coaxing, she tucked herself into Viktor’s side; whimpering and teary eyed as they made their exit.

Viktor wrapped an arm firm around Bernadette and escorted her back to the car, crooning softly at her.

Meanwhile, as soon as the kids stepped out, Adrik's hand lunged forward and he grabbed Aslan up by the front of his shirt and yanked him upwards. In the time it took him to raise Aslan up, his whole face had gone feral and wolfish.

"I have half the mind to tear your tongue out of your mouth. Do you realize what you've just said?" He growled, teeth snapping and snarling.

Aslan could only yell and jerk away violently, genuinely surprised by the abruptness of the whole situation. He had only seen Esther change a handful of times, and never half way.

“You are a miserable little man to have said that in front of her! To blame her for her mother’s passing! She didn’t ask for that to happen, but you’ve punished her for it every day!” Adrik shook Aslan and snapped at the air in front of his face. “Her mother loved her so much that she gave everything for her, but you make Bernadette feel like she took it all instead!”
