Toma had been doing his best, rejoining society was no easy feat, at last not for him. A lot of things were still hard, Daisy had been working hard with him in physical and speech therapy. As his humanity started seep back into him, his memories did as well. Not just the ones of his father urging him to kill himself, of riding on the back of Valentina’s moped into the city, his mother’s silhouette illuminated by fire light in the winter. But memories of a tall dark stranger, his smirk and the way he waved Toma over at the bar. He could remember the drinks poured and how the stranger would laugh and Toma would flush. But with that he could remember being brutalized by the same stranger, new marks on his person that weren’t just self inflicted anymore. The stranger took him back to a lavish suite in the city, everything in the room was modern and beautiful, expensive looking. It felt very on brand for the stranger with his designer suit and the engraved money clip he flashed from his pocket.

That one night felt like a dream at first, Toma dared to venture to a gay bar on his own only to be swept up by a rich and handsome prince character. But when Toma could go no further, when he refused the man, he became violent. He turned into something else and almost literally ripped Toma to pieces.

With these memories, he needed more help. He started going to group therapy for trauma, the people there were friendly but people in general made him feel uneasy. Daisy felt it was important to socialize more for his recovery, so with all his different kinds of therapy he was also moved into a halfway house. It was a small building nearby the Society, specifically for Supernaturals who were reforming criminals, the one’s who showed promise were granted the humanity of dorms and cafeteria food. Toma wasn’t in love with the idea, Daisy’s lab had been a sort of security blanket for Toma. He wasn’t afraid of hurting her because she was armed with the biological knowledge she needed to dismantle him. That being said, she trusted him so completely by now, giving her blessing to move into this house and go out and do things.

Toma was not so sure. His hospital slippers and the tiny plastic cup his meds were dispensed in, the paper sheets and single ply toilet paper were all things that made him feel especially foreign and far from home. When the sun was high, he could open the blinds and close his eyes; take a deep breath. The sun here, shining through the blinds was the same sun as back home in Romania. Although it wasn’t a place he was missing, he could never go back and see his father or the same cobble stone streets he walked with the stranger who almost ended him. What he was missing was the feeling of home, not within walls but in his heart. So he tried to recreate that feeling where ever he could.

He had special privileges now, he could travel alone but he had a curfew. Which Toma didn’t like being out late anyways. But he loved talking leisure walks on sunny days. He’d get tea and check out book stores, he even went and got his hair cut by himself the other day. Not flinching at the touch of a stranger was hard, but he managed thanks to therapy. His favorite thing to do right now though, was visit the farmers market. He loved breathing in the fresh herbs and getting lost in the colorful visuals of the various produce and street venders. Toma had a special bag he splurged on that he would carry his goods in, he did quite a bit of cooking when he was allowed to use the kitchen so he usually got some good shopping done at the market.

Today felt especially great somehow, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was pleasantly warm. The sun brought out his freckles and the pink in his cheeks. Valentina had bought him some new clothes recently, so he was feeling comfortable in the sense of looking presentable. In Romania, Sebastian would often dress Toma. He’d buy him baggy and ill fitting clothes to hide his girlish frame and self harm scars. But today he was dressed in a striped t shirt, color blocks of black and beige. He slipped a coffee colored cardigan over it to hide his arms though he wore it open. Bringing the whole ensemble together were a pair of hunter green slacks that he cuffed a little at the ankles, and put his shirt in a French tuck behind a nice belt that ensured his pants hugged his hips well.

Wearing clothes he liked and fit him well seemed to do something for his confidence. The girl at a stand selling homemade jams caught his attention, she was smiling and complimenting him, she was nice. Even though she was so barking up the wrong tree, Toma thought it was a nice enough thought and humored her. Admiring the jams while the girl asked him questions about what he was looking for and how he was enjoying the market.

Rudolph Olivier Balks had been many things in his young (relatively speaking) life. He had been a simple street magician, a student of the arcane, a High Warlock of New York, but more and more lately he was a caretaker for his ailing mother, which, in itself had many tasks. One of which was taking her to the farmers market to help run her booth of honey products, courtesy of a rooftop set-up Rudolph himself had built for her with his brother in his younger years.

Rudolph was still in his infancy by the standard of the supernatural community and it certainly showed with his youthful looks. He was on the taller side and was certainly filled out between his broad shoulders. Dark brown hair was cut closely cropped to his head, mostly because he wasn't sure how to style it by any means, especially given he had a prominent set of horns. His hands were rugged from both years of carpentry and the occasional backfiring of a spell or two, but his eyes were soft and the color of golden nectar. But none of this was really visible from beneath the obscene sunhat and apron of his mother's creation he wore to match hers as he sat beside her behind their table set up. He didn't mind, however. He'd endure much more than a tacky outfit or two for his mother.

Lizette was by no means an old woman, barely in her early fifties, but she'd been struck by a degenerative illness that, no matter how many times he tried to quell it with magic, would not ease. Rudolph was very distressed by this, however, Lizette was not. She had always insisted that she'd lived a very good life and had been given two very good sons, so she wouldn't mourn the potential of her passing. Instead, she would revel in today, tomorrow, and whatever days she had left.

She was currently perched in a chair behind the booth, an oxygen tank sitting haphazardly in a bag of knitting materials beside her while Rudolph was carefully skinning an apple for her.

"Oh, Rudy, you should go pick us out some jam. Take a few jars of honey for whoever's at the booth, see if you can trade for some boysenberry and strawberry." She said when she eyed the booth not too far from where they were set up today.

Rudy looked up from his task.

"A few jars for some jam? Ma' that's hardly a fair trade for us." He clicked his tongue, only to earn a swat from Lizette.

"Listen to your mom or, so help me, I'll start having Archie come with me instead." She threatened, which, wasn't really a threat, but it still got Rudy up with a heavy sigh.

"Boysenberry and strawberry?" He asked as he went to put the unfinished apple into a bag into their cooler. He stood up, cleaning his hands on the bottom of the apron, and grabbed up two jars of honey.

"Yes. Oh, and do give her a tip too. I want her to have some money too." Lizette chirped, earning a withering look from Rudy.

"Fine, fine, fine." He sighed as he stepped out from under the sunshade set up at their booth. He headed over to the jam booth with his honey in tow.

Toma was still nodding along at the girl but was starting to feel bad, like he was wasting her time.

“Uh sorry, could I have a jar of jam please?” Toma asked, interjecting in the middle of whatever she was saying.

“Oh! Of course, what would you like?” She asked eagerly.

Toma examined the jars displayed, pickings were a little sparse, the jam must be really popular.

“Boysenberry, please.” Toma nodded, already fishing for his wallet from his bag, buried under heirloom tomatoes and fragrant parsley.

“Last jar! Lucky you.” She chirped.

Rudy stepped up to the booth beside a man. He seemed to be busy fishing something out of his bag, so Rudy took that moment to put his own "order" in.

"Excuse me, would you be willing to trade some honey for some jam?" he asked.

The girl paused thoughtfully. “Uh, sure. What would you like?” She asked, all the while packing up Tomas order.

"Can I get some boysenberry and strawberry?" Rudy asked, already carefully putting down his own jars of honey.

“Oh sorry, this gentleman just purchased our last boysenberry.” She explained.

Toma caught that, finally looking up from his bag with his wallet in hand. He would have happily forfeited the jam to whoever, but upon peeking up at the man offering to trade; he was more inclined. A flush immediately fell upon his cheeks but tried to recover quickly.

“Oh that’s okay, I haven’t paid yet. He can have.” Toma waved quickly.

"Oh, are you sure?" Rudy asked, looking to the man then. He almost instantly felt his cheeks go a bit hot himself as he looked, actually looked, at him. "I, um, we have a booth. If you're really sure, I can maybe give you something as a thank you."

Toma was awkward and shy in most social interactions, handsome men would be no exception. When he met the handsome stranger in Romania, he did all the talking. He didn’t know what he was going to do after going to his booth, but he just knew he couldn’t let him go.

“Go ahead, it’s all yours..Um sure! You uh, got a deal, sir.” Toma nodded, kicking himself for calling him, sir.

The girl went ahead and package up the jams for Rudy and collecting the jars of honey to move under the counter.

"Oh, here. Ma' said to give you a tip, get yourself lunch or something." Rudy said as he handed the girl several dollars before taking the jars then. "Thank you." He then looked to Toma and smiled. "And thank you. The booth is right over here. We have a few different kinds of honey, you can take whichever one you like best."

Toma took a break from ogling the male to look confused.

“I didn’t know there was more than one kind.” He admitted.

"Oh, well, I mean, technically there's a lot of different kinds of honey, but what I meant was we make different flavors. My ma' has a lot more freetime these days so she minds the bees and tries different recipes to flavor the honey." Rudy explained. "The orange blossom one we keep is my favorite." He gave a little smile, still casually eyeing the other man. "I'm Rudolph by the way, or Rudy."

Toma smiled then, feeling relieved and confident. It seemed to be going well.

“I’m Toma.” He introduced, offering out a slender hand for a shake.

"Toma? I've never heard that name before. It's nice." Rudy commented as he took Toma's hand for a shake. He gave it a casual, lingering squeeze, only letting go when they reached the booth. "Ma' I got your jams. Toma here let us have the last of the boysenberry, so I told him we'd give him a jar of honey." Rudy said to Lizette.

Lizette looked up from some knitting she had taken out of her bag and instantly lit up. She quickly stood, mindful of her tank, and reached out for Toma's hand across the table.

"Oh, of course! Thank you so much." She said cheerily. "Take whichever one you'd like, though, I'm sure Rudy's told you, our orange blossom is the best out of the bunch."

Toma shook Lizettes hand and smiled pleasantly.

“He did say it was his favorite, though I don’t think I could just take a jar in good conscious. But I’m happy to buy some.” He nodded.
