"Mm, she is." Adrik agreed, taking a beat to formulate his words. "Bernadette, I...I want you to know something. Me and Asha would never...want to replace your parents, especially not your mother, but...we love you, very much, and we'll keep loving you for her." He nodded, reaching to place his hand at her knee then. He gave it a squeeze. "You're ours too, I want you to know that." He said to her.

Bernadette blinked with surprise, she wasn’t totally sure how to react. Images of her Mother and what her Dad said, the ticking from the watch and Adrik calling her ours all swirled together. She cracked a smile finally, eyes misty as she thought she might cry happy tears again.

“Thank you.” She sniffed.

"You don't have to say thank you, but you are welcome." Adrik said, smiling softly as he went to put his arm around Bernadette's shoulders to give her a squeeze.

Viktor watched with a giddy and proud smile on his face as he watched his father embrace Bernadette. He reached to grab Bernadette's hand to twine their fingers together.

Adrik gave a sigh.

"I'm awfully hungry after all this. Should we call Mama and see if she wants to meet us at the buffet?" He asked, watching as Viktor lit up at the suggestion.

It had been hard for Viktor the last few months. He was juggling school and the reality of his situation, the fact he was going to be a father very soon. But somehow, he had defied the odds stacked against him (and his one brain cell) and he managed to graduate from high school alongside Bernadette. It was both a relief as well as problem. It was a relief because he no longer had to worry about getting good grades or figuring out how to make time for wrestling and his other responsibilities, but also a problem because now that he didn't have to worry about those things, he had to focus on his and Bernadette's situation and that was tricky at best.

While he and Bernadette had told their respective families and were regularly going to doctor's appointments, they had done very little beyond that, even in the way of discussion. They hadn't really discussed a living situation, they hadn't discussed or bought any of the necessities beyond a few odds and ends, and they definitely hadn't talked about marriage, which was one of the bigger problems according to Adrik.

The Nikitins were hardly religious, however they were VERY Russian. Mityr and Riley had married in an Orthodox church, Adrik and Asha were married in the very same one. It had come to Adrik's attention that his youngest had yet to make any plans to do so himself and that simply did not sit with him.

"You have to marry her, Viktor. You love her, don't you? You're starting a family, aren't you?"

These things were true, and Viktor wasn't opposed, but he certainly hadn't thought about it the way his father had, and if the way Adrik talked about it was any indication, it must be very important. Adrik told Viktor to consider proposing and doing it soon before Bernadette got too big as he was fearful that the priest at "their church" wouldn't marry them if he knew they had conceived out of wedlock.

So there Viktor was, heading up to Bernadette's apartment, box of garlic knots he'd picked up on the way in hand, to have a conversation.

He approached the apartment door and knocked.

“Come in!” Bernadette called, suspecting it was Viktor.

Bernadette was having a fairly easy pregnancy now, the nausea had mostly subsided and she was keeping food down. So with her pregnancy cooperating with, she was able to focus on school. She graduated, while her marks weren’t great she still passed and was waiting to hear back from colleges she applied to. Right now she was getting up from a nap, folding up a blanket she had been using before tasking herself with folding up the futon.

Viktor let himself in and immediately lit up, as he always did, when he saw Bernadette.

"Hey, you hungry?" He asked, holding up the box before bumping the door closed behind him.

“Always.” Bernadette chirped. “You have a key you know, you don’t have to knock.” She chuckled, teasing him.

"It's still your apartment, I don't want to be rude." Viktor contested as he went over to the bar attached to the kitchen and set the box down before going into the kitchen to grab napkins. "How was your day? What've you been up to?" He asked as he got situated in a chair.

“What about you?” Bernadette asked, approaching the bar and perching on a stool before reaching for a garlic knot.

"Oh, well, I did some work for my dad this morning and then we went out to lunch...aaaand we got to talking." Viktor nodded before taking a little bite of his garlic knot.
