Toma didn’t want to bring Rudy back to the group home obviously, but there was a kitchen he used at a culinary school when it wasn’t being used. That should suffice, it was neutral territory and private enough. Weekends were best since his curfew was later, and that would give him a week to prepare.
“Will you be here next week too? I can get some fresh ingredients and take you back to the kitchen I use.” He offered.
A week exactly had passed since Toma first met Rudy.
After the interaction, Toma promptly went home and dry heaved into a paper bag. It was a whirlwind of emotions, he was afraid and anxious and embarrassed and exited. Of course he considered not telling his sister but of course again, he had to tell someone. Toma had never dated previously, his only romantic exchange was...Not a good one, to say the least. But with Rudy he didn’t have to think about it, not in the moment of course, agreeing to a date was almost a knee jerk reaction. But now that he was wandering the farmers market to meet up with him again he was feeling apprehensive. What if it was a joke? What if it was a friendly hangout and not a date?
All these questions he asked Valentina repeatedly whenever she took him shopping to buy a new outfit for said date. She waved off his worries with a careless flick of her wrist.
“Don’t overthink it, he likes you.” She said, and Toma tried to hear it in his head as he walked.
Like his sister, Toma (now) was a snappy dresser. He liked clothes and fashion and how things looked on models in magazines and how different fabrics draped on his body. Today he was wearing a patterned name brand sweater and snug fitting slacks. He had his bag with him of course, he had picked up what produces he wanted before heading towards where he remembered the honey booth was. He had even brought a gift for Lizette, she seemed like a kind women. She was certainly nice to Toma which he appreciated. He remembered last time they forgot bread for lunch, so Toma baked fresh bread to gift to her. Which he was regretting now, because he felt stupid carrying it around and also, like, forgetting bread does not equate to not having access to it. But he was here, with bread, gotta stand by that decision.
Rudy waa no stranger when it came to dating. He’d dated plenty of men and women alike, so, in theory, there was no reason for him to be as nervous as he was, yet he felt like he’d swallowed a bucket full of equally anxious butterflies at the idea of his date with Toma.
He’d dressed up for the occasion, which standing behind the table at the farmers market, he looked a little silly with his pressed button-up, dark washed jeans and suede brogues, all topped with his “work” apron that matched both his mother and brother’s. While he was anxiously pacing, probably steering any prospective business, Archie and Lizette were sitting in the lawn chairs under the sunshade. Archie was sitting awkwardly in the chair beside his mother, holding her yarn while she knitted and watching his brother pace.
“He’s not even late yet, can you relax?” Archie asked.
“I am relaxed...but what if he decides not to come?” Rudy asked, earning an eye roll from Archie.
“Archie, leave him be. He’s just excited, that’s all.” Lizette said knowingly because of course she knew her sons best. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Toma made his way over to the booth, Lizette and another boy in site, presumably his brother that he mentioned last time. But most importantly, Rudy was visibly there, and all dressed up no less. He looked good, not that he didn’t before. But the notion he would wear a pressed shirt (though under an apron) for Toma made him flush and his heart do a giddy leap. He swallowed the nervous lump in his throat before approaching further, then he put on his perfect, polite and dimpled smile.
“Of course.” Toma smiled, chuckling a little before pausing over by Lizette. “Hello again, it’s a bit silly but I made this for you.” He said, holding up and presenting the bread. It was in a cute little porcelain dish, with flowers and bees hand painted on each side. It wasn’t hot but it was still relatively warm, the buttery scent making it’s way beyond the glass top.
“How thoughtful! It smells lovely! Thank you, Toma.” Lizette beamed as she accepted the gift. She stretched to give Toma’s cheek a motherly squeeze.
Rudy watched the exchange and felt a pleasant warmth in his chest, a warmth that quickly went away when Archie spoke up.
“He was worried you might’ve flaked because he’s so goofy looking.” Archie said, though that was a rich statement coming from him considering they more or less looks the same except a longer face and freckles. While Rudy had eyes like gold, Archie seemed to have blue eyes split with fragmented honey. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
Toma smiled contently at the gesture. His own mother wasn’t often affectionate toward him, at least not in the presence of his father. But once in a while she would steal quick motherly touches like this and the gesture made Toma’s anxiety soften. But he looked up at the comment the other gentlemen made and paused thoughtfully.
“Well, he was wearing a sun hat last time so that’s kind of where my expectations were.” He began, trying to joke but he sounded unsure of himself as he said it.
“Hmm, it must’ve been covering enough of his face then.” Archie joked back without much thought.
“If I only need a hat, you must need a bag.” Rudy said before going over to Lizette to hand his apron to her and to stoop to kiss her cheek. “I’ll text you to let you know whenever we’re through, Ma. Archie’ll help pack everything up if I’m not back before closing.”
Lizette smiled and reached up to pat Rudy’s face, ending the gesture with a little pinch of his cheek.
“Be good, have fun.” She said to him.
Rudy smiled back and then went to join Toma. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“He wasn’t totally wrong, by the way. I wasn’t worried that you wouldn’t show up, so much as worried that I’d be disappointed if you didn’t.” He admitted. “So I’m glad you came.” _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
“I don’t know, probably mope, help with the stall, mope some more, pack up, and then mope at home.” Rudy shrugged. Though he said it lightly, it was fairly truthful. He would have been very disappointed if Toma hadn’t shown up. _________________ Butts n' butts n' butts n' butts.
