Viktor felt his jaw clenching as he looked at Aslan. He couldn’t even begin to understand how it was as easy as it appeared for Aslan to cast Bernadette aside.

More than unable to understand, he couldn’t stand it.

“You’re a bad man.” Viktor seethed from gritted teeth. “You never deserved Bernadette. She is a good girl, she is soft and kind and smart. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, she wouldn’t even know how to begin resenting you, but I wish she could. God, I wish she could.”

“She’s not like that...but you’d know that if you cared enough about her.” Viktor spat before turning harshly on his heel to leave.

Viktor begrudgingly made his way back to Bernadette’s apartment alone. He was loathing having to tell Bernadette that her father wouldn’t be coming to see her, but he knew he had to do it.

He sighed to himself as he walked down the hallway towards Bernadette’s apartment. He reached up to gently knock at the door for her to let him in.

Bernadette had treated to herself to a hot shower while Viktor was out. By now she was doing much better, her eyes were still red and tired from all her crying earlier, but she was less tense now. She was curled up on her futon, folded it out and burrowed in her quilts until she heard a knock at the door. She peeked through the peep hole to make sure it wasn’t Ed or Ross, unlocking and opening it once seeing it was Viktor.

Of course she saw he was alone, while slightly disheartened, she couldn’t say she was surprised.

While Viktor has told Aslan he wanted Bernadette to resent him, he couldn’t say he still felt the same when he saw Bernadette standing there in front of him. He reached up to a run a hand over the back of his neck.

“He...couldn’t come tonight.” He lied.

Bernadette gave a weak and understanding smile.

“I know, it’s okay.” She nodded, feigning a smile. She was used to this, Viktor was not. “Will you stay with me then? Just until I fall asleep?” She asked.

“Of course.” Viktor nodded, reaching out to push back some of her hair for her. “I’ll stay as long as you’ll let me.” He have a small, bittersweet smile.

“I know it’s maybe uncomfortable to ask, but will you please lay with me?” Bernadette asked, while it was completely innocent, her cheeks still pinked at the notion.

Bernadette sputtered a quiet thank you, before scuttling over to the futon and plopped down. She gathered up the blankets and evened them out as though Viktor would care.

Viktor kicked off his shoes and waited for Bernadette to get everything situated for them before he eased onto the futon. He scooted as far up as he could, but his feet hung a good ways off still.

Bernadette was tiny, even more so in comparison to Viktor. It never bothered her, but in this context it was nice. She pulled one of her quilts around her and snuggled close, resting her face on his chest and clinging to his side. Any closeness with Viktor felt comfortable and natural, this time was no exception beyond feeling herself relax against him, finally feeling safe.

Viktor shifted, only so he could wrap an arm around Bernadette, holding her close to him.

“You know...Bertie, you can stay with my family for a minute.” He said quietly.
