“Oh...I don’t really get it.” Viktor admitted, but then he reached over to pat at Bernadette’s hand on the bed. “But if you ever want to talk about it or know how I can help, let me know. I’m always here for you.” He smiled.

Bernadette didn’t flinch from the touch this time, instead she took a deep breath.

“Viktor, have you ever been in love?” She asked then.

“W-what? Love?” He sputtered nervously.

“Yeah, love.” Bernadette laughed a little, feeling comforted by the fact that she wasn’t the only one bashful about the subject.

“Uh...well, that’s a really sudden question, Bertie.” Viktor said, reaching up with his free hand to rub over the back of his neck. “Well...I’m only seventeen, you know? I’m still young. And being so young, I’ve never really had a serious girlfriend or anything...but...I’ve had crushes. I’ve had one that makes my heart all floppy when I see her. So, if that’s love, or the start of it, maybe.”

“I see.” Bernadette nodded quietly, and she stayed quiet for what felt like a very long time. She looked to Viktor then, not so seriously but with sincerity.

“Viktor...Please don't feel obligated to say anything back, or tell me what you think I’d want to hear...” She began slowly. “But I wanted to tell you, I love you. Not like how I loved you before though, but in love. If you don’t feel the same, that’s okay...I just wanted you to know.” She finished, though she kicked her feet shyly off the edge of the bed, she was feeling overall very relieved. It felt good to say it out loud.

The pink in Viktor’s cheeks deepened and he looked up to better look at Bernadette’s face.

“Wait...do you mean that?” He asked, though it was fairly obvious she did.

“Of course, I wouldn’t joke about something like this.” Bernadette replied. A little flustered now, her relief retreating with his reaction.

Viktor could see Bernadette becoming flustered, so he quickly tried come up with the words that would both assure her and also...convey what he himself had been feeling. After all, it wasn’t every day that the crush you had that made your heart go all floppy admit their own affections towards you.

“I know, I didn’t mean it like...it’s just...Bernadette, I think I feel the same way about you.” He said to her. “I’ve always like you, you’re a good friend, but with all the time we’ve spent together and the more I’ve gotten to know you and be apart of your life, I really think that I love you too.”

Bernadette could feel her face get hot, she wasn’t expecting that.

“Really?” She exclaimed. “A-Are you sure?” She sputtered.

“Am I sure? Yes, I’m sure.” Viktor chuckled, still pink himself. “You... make me really happy when you’re around, and when you’re not, I’m happy just thinking about the next time I get to see you. I think you’re the kindest, funniest, and softest person, it makes it especially easy to be around you.”

Bernadette felt her breath hitch in her throat when Viktor touched her cheek but she didn’t shy away from the touch. Though she was sure her cheek probably felt embarrassingly hot in his hand, she swallowed the nervous lump in her throat, her gaze soft as she blinked up at him. Bernadette placed one of her free hands over his, hoping the touch was enough encouragement to touch her.
