Cardinal recoiled a bit, surprised even though she didn’t even know what to expect in the first place. Her blue eyes looked large and started as she blinked, processing what she was feeling.

“You...I don’t understand. What do you mean, we would’ve figured it out...I’m fine on my own.” Cardinal sputtered somewhat.

"Cardinal, I would be gone months for training and god knows where I would have ended up location-wise at the end of it all." Seamus said, his words sputtering bitterly.

"Don't patronize me! I'm not dumb, Seamus. But I love you so if that's what you wanted to do then I'd do whatever we needed to do. And missing out on something like this for me, well it doesn't feel very good, Seamus." Cardinal exclaimed bitterly.

"And it wouldn't have felt good for me to leave you!" Seamus shot back. "I didn't say you were the reason I said no, I'm saying that I didn't want to pursue it if it meant leaving you here!"

"I didn't do it to discount you! I just did it because I thought it would be easier if I didn't even put the option on the table!" Seamus shook his head, thoroughly worked up by the argument.

Seamus opened his mouth, but his words fell on his tongue. His words died fast not just because he didn't want to continue the argument, but also because as he looked at Cardinal he could see her face being illuminated brightly from his side of the cab as well as hear the wailing of a car horn somewhere too close by. He barely had enough time to wrinkle his brow and turn his head to look before his whole body lurched at a sudden impact.

Cardinal saw the headlights behind Seamus though it took her too long to register. Her face contorted as she let out a yell that seemed to travel in slow motion. She reached out for Seamus but he fingers retracted as he body jerked back against the door.

It'd been several hours since Murphey and Biddy heard of their son and would-be daughter-in-law's accident and every minute that had passed since then was absolutely excruciating. Murphey had tried to hold himself together for the sake of his wife and for the sake of himself, really, but he felt like that was an impossible feat, especially once they arrived at the hospital where Seamus and Cardinal had been taken and were told what kind of condition the young twosome were in.

A police officer who had been among the first responders explained that Seamus and Cardinal (as well as their poor cab driver) were very fortunate to have made it out of the accident given the nature of the scene when he came upon it. The car had been mangled to bits and a good portion of it was still stuck in the grill of the truck that'd struck it. Murphey and Biddy had been told that the person behind the wheel of said truck was in custody and now had pending charges including driving while intoxicated. Though that was certainly a relief, it did little to relax Murphey or Biddy, especially when a doctor approached them next and explained Seamus's condition and what was being done.

He was already in surgery by the time Murphey and Biddy arrived, apparently having had suffered from a punctured lung and some internal bleeding. That alone had Murphey absolutely reeling, but the doctor assured that the surgery was already looking promising enough. He'd suffered from a few broken ribs and some mild head trauma, but the doctor explained that he was more concerned about the state of Seamus's spine due to the nature of the accident. He explained that they'd need to do further testing as soon as possible, but for the time being they wanted to get his surgery completed first and foremost and then settled in a room for observation.

The whole situation had Murphey's head spinning, so much so that once the doctor excused himself, he flopped into a chair in the waiting room and was entirely convinced he'd never be able to get up again.

Biddy was normally the strong and loud type, she seldom cried and wasn’t particularly emotional. But when they got the call about her kids and what had happened she was a mess the whole way there and didn’t improve afte speaking with a doctor. Her accent got thicker as she babbled and cried at the doctor, slurring hysteric threats ‘of anythjng happened to her son God help you,’ and etc. She face was red and puffy from crying, she looked absolutely haunting slumped against Murphey in her own chair. Her green eyes wet and frantic looking as she struggled to catch her breath from all her sobbing.

It took awhile, and she came some time after Biddy and Murphey but a tall woman with fire engine hair came storming in. Covered with her own assortment of body modifications, it felt apparent this was Cardinals big sister Starling. They didn’t look much alike, but judging by the cardinal tattooed on her neck, they must’ve been close. Starling was also wildly hysteric until speaking with a doctor. Cardinal was in pretty bad shape though much better off than Murphey. Her hand was broken and her ribs had some pretty aggressive bruising. She had a linear fracture on the back of her skull but there wasn’t any indication yet of any brain damage. Other than that her face was cut up pretty badly, but nothing stitches couldn’t take care of. Cardinal was already out and in a room though still unconscious.

Starling demanded to see Cardinal even though she wasn’t awake yet, which the Doctor obliged.

Murphey looked up when he heard a woman demanding to see Cardinal. Upon glancing up, he didn't have a doubt in his mind that this was her older sister. He had yet to meet her, but Cardinal spoke of her often enough. He gently jostled Biddy to wake her up before getting up and approaching the red head.

"Excuse me, you're Cardinal's sister right?" He asked her.

Starling turned to look at who addressed her, an older couple.

“Yes I am.” She answered. Seamus looked enough like the man asking, but it seemed there was on one else they could be. “Are you Seamus’s parents?” She asked.

"Yeah, that's us. How's...um...did they tell you how Cardinal was doing? They would t really tell us much." Murphey swallowed a stressful and emotional lump.

“Yeah, um, she’ll be fine they think. The worst part is she has a fractured skull or something? I dunno, they don’t think there’s any brain damage but we have to wait for her to wake up to know for sure...” Starling sputtered tearfully before taking a deep breath. “I’m going to go back and see her if you want to come?” She offered.
