“I want to make sure the baby is...you know...okay?” Seamus said carefully, recalling how eager they were to tell their families about their first pregnancy and how disappointing it all was when Cardinal miscarried. “We’ll see how far along you are and if everything is okay. After that, I’d like to tell my parents, of course.”

Before Cardinal replied, the doctor knocked and let herself in. She advised Cardinal to get up on the bed and lift up her shirt and unbutton her pants before pulling out the Doppler.

“Let’s see if we can get a heartbeat and see how far along you are.” She explained.

Seamus sucked in an anxious breath and waited. The baby would be fine, they had to be fine, he decided.

The doctor moved the Doppler around a little, having some trouble at first. But after moving it around she found the heartbeat fibally, it was loud and rapid. It sounded something like a washing machine.

“There it is.” She smiled.

Cardinal let out a shakey sigh of relief, smiling over at Seamus.

Seamus’s breath hitched as he let out a relieved little sigh.

“A-and it’s fine? The baby’s alright?” He asked.

“Sounds that way, a good strong heartbeat. I’d guess a little shy of a month long, but the geneticist can tell you more. With a history of miscarriage, I always recommend taking it easy. No stress. Just relax as much as you can.” The doctor explained.

“Yeah, of course, of course.” Seamus nodded, a smile filtering onto his lips then. He looked to Cardinal. “I’m gonna take real good care of you guys, I promise.” He beamed then.

It’d been a few months since the accident and while most of Seamus’s wounds had healed up, the ones that mattered had not. He’d been left with very few visible scars and all of his interior injuries and broken bones had long since been mended. The only issue he was still faced with was his back injury.

Days and even weeks after the accident he was in so much pain all over his body that he felt like there was no way his spinal and nerve damages were that extensive, however as time went on and the pain evened out, he realized most of the sensations he’d been feelin were phantom aches. He had no feeling left below most of his waist, just as the doctor had said there would be a possibility of and while that was hard to cope with sometimes, he mostly kept reminding himself that he was at least alive. Cardinal was alive. Their baby was alive. These were all good things to think about when everything else felt raw and wrong.

But still he had to be realistic about his situation, even when he sought to focus on those good things. He had to think about what was going to be right for Cardinal and her growing belly, what was going to be good for their baby in the long run.

Currently, he was laying in bed thinking about just that as he waited for Cardinal to get out of the shower. She’d offered to help get him up and showered himself, but he insisted he was still tired and that she should shower first. Mostly he just wanted time to think about things before he proposed some things to her.

Cardinal herself had remained fearless and optimistic about things. All that mattered to her is that they were alive, and for that she was happy to do anything and everything for Seamus. Though she had to admit, it was getting harder, her growing belly and her own aches and pains from pregnancy bubbling to the surface. However she saved face for Seamus, she would always be fine as long as he was fine. She’d finished up in the shower, walking out in her clothes for the day as she towel dried her mostly brown hair. The beginnings of a belly, stretching out a distillers t shirt and she opted for sweats this morning versus unbuttoned jeans.

“Alright, all done. I saved some hot water for ya.” She chirped with a smile as she entered the bedroom.

“Awfully gracious of you.” Seamus chuckled before he gestured for Cardinal to come over to him, arms spread for an embrace. “C’mere. You look cute.”

“You foolin’, nothing cute happenin over here.” Cardinal laughed but obliged, flopping onto the bed and crawling up to Seamus.

“I’m super serious. You both look extra cute today.” Seamus chuckled, wrapping his around Cardinal and hefting her close. He sighed contentedly and rubbed a hand over her back. “Be honest, do I smell bad enough to merit a shower?” He asked her.

“Is it bad?” Seamus pulled back enough to cup a hand to his face so he could smell his own breath. “When I get up, I’ll do that first thing. But first, I wanted to talk to you. If that’s alright.”
