"We've looked over the x-rays and the CT scans and it appears that your spinal chord was more or less severed by the impact in the accident. It will take some time to see just how severe the injury is, but from what we can tell it's severe enough that paralysis is a very real possibility." Doctor Dennington carefully explained.

Seamus felt a wave of shock come over him at the news. He knew he was hurt in the accident, of course, but he never knew how hurt.

"So...I...won't walk again?" He sputtered slightly.

Cardinal was just as shocked, she blinked at the doctor, totally wide eyed. Seamus was this, force of nature, a broad shouldered giant. How could he be that hurt? So hurt that he could in theory never walk again?

"I'm sorry, you said it'll take time to know how serious his injury is. How much time? What are we supposed to be doing in the mean time?" She quizzed then.

"I can't give you an exact time frame, but it could be a few months. Seamus needs to rest and heal for right now and, when he's able, I think physical therapy is certainly something I would like to get him started on. But, that being said, as it stands right now, just from what we've taken away from all the tests we've done, the x-rays, CT scans, his spinal chord has been severely damaged. At the very least, we're looking at a partial paralysis." The doctor said.

Seamus just stared.

"Partial, how partial? Please be specific, just his legs, one leg, one side, so on." Cardinal rattled off anxiously.

Seamus squeezed Cardinal's hand as she anxiously rattled off.

"I'm afraid I can't be more specific at this time. Once he's healed and once he's started physical therapy, we can see how extensive it is." Doctor Dennington said, glancing to Seamus then. "I know it's a weighty diagnosis, but I promise, Seamus, we will work with you to ensure a good quality of life."

Seamus swallowed and gave a little nod, acknowledging that he'd at least heard the doctor.

"I'll be around if you have any other questions, Seamus." The doctor said before excusing himself and exiting the room.

Seamus sat quietly before letting out a shaky little breath, glancing over to Cardinal.

"Guess I really can't join the NFL now, huh?" He tried to say lightly, though he was still a mess of emotions inside.

"Oh honey, come here." Cardinal immediately moved to be sitting on his bed, wrapping and arm around him. "We'll be alright.." She cooed.

"Yeah...I know." Seamus nodded as he leaned into Cardinal's embrace, eyes squeezing shut as he wrapped his own arms around her. He swallowed a bud of a knot in his throat, refusing to get worked up. After all, he was alive and so was Cardinal, and more than that, they were expecting. Things would be more than alright, they'd be good, he was sure. "It's going to be better than just alright."

"That's the spirit." Cardinal feigned a smile as she held him. "This can be your harrowing tale you tell on The Moth." She teased lightly.

It'd been a few weeks since Seamus's diagnosis and while it was a hard pill to swallow, he was dealing with it in great stride. He'd been released from the hospital not too long ago and while Biddy and Murphey advocated for both he and Cardinal to come back to Demont with them, Seamus was insistent that they stay put. He and Cardinal would make things work for them, they had to.

Their first trial was getting Seamus home and situated with a wheelchair, which was tricky business. It was even trickier business trying to maneuver with his wheelchair in a house that was already too small for him to begin with. He could see a necessary move in the foreseeable future. Even trickier business was getting around town with the wheelchair without a car that could accommodate said chair, so it took more planning than Seamus could have ever thought to get himself and Cardinal to the clinic for her first real pregnancy check up outside the hospital.

Seamus still looked pretty dinged up and, of course, he was still grappling the reality of his situation, but he still looked genuinely pleased and excited as he sat with Cardinal in the waiting room.

Cardinal was a naturally spunky person, so in the weeks since Seamus had been released she had tackled challenges with his wheelchair head on. Which usually meant ramming him on occasion from pushing him with gusto. But she felt good and optimistic, even so as they waited to be called back by the doctor. She found his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze as smiled at him.

“Excited?” She asked.

“Mm, very. I’m pretty excited to see our bean.” Seamus said, smiling over at Cardinal as he squeezed her hand back. “You?”

“Mmhm! A little nervous, because of the miscarriage. But I’m excited still!” Cardinal nodded with a half grin.

“If they made it this far, I’m sure they’re going to be fine.” Seamus said, trying to be optimistic. Of course, there would probably always be worry of miscarriage whenever he and Cardinal would manage to get pregnant, but he was trying to be positive.

“I hope so.” Cardinal nodded before a nurse called her name from the door. She stood up and got behind Seamus, pushing him through in his chair. The nurse took her height and weight, and a urine sample before putting them back in a room. She asked several more questions, if Cardinal had left the country or been in recent contact with someone who’s in and out of the country. As well as any smoking or drinking habits and previous medical history. Cardinal of course delicately explained about their previous miscarriage as well as their recent vehicular accident. The nurse dutifully took notes before heading out.

“The Doctor will be with you shortly.” She said on her way out.

Seamus has reached for Cardinal’s hand as she explained everything to the nurse and he continued to hold her hand once the nurse left to get the doctor. He ran idle, reassuring circles at the back of her hand with his thumb.

“It should be fine, hmm?” He said.
